Ah, good old Aiwa. Still kicking around

    • +13

They made great Portable casset players (ie -walkmans) back in the 80s and 90s

  • Aiwa Japanese brand. Or has it been licenced off to Woolies to rebrand junk from China?

    • +1

      Japanese brand crap now.

    • +4

Japanese brands aren't as reliable and great as they used to be.

Like Nintendo, Seiko, Sony, Honda etc. their reliability has gone down over the many years. And that's from experience using their products in the past decade.

      • -6

They outsourced to cheap Oriental lands and devalued their brands as a result

      • +1

        Like Nintendo, Seiko, Sony,

agree. bought pair of recent model Noise cancelling headphones from Sony.
I admit it’s the cheaper model, but taking them out they felt a bit disappointingly light weight and flimsy.
later realised they are made from recycled plastic which is fair but they still feel a bit cheap and thin.
they are designed to fold so I get that, but unfolding them and the seams don’t really line up.
already reading other customers bad reviews (weeks after I started using them) saying folding mechanism snapped after few months use, another saying earpads fell apart in few months. 🫤

sound quality and noise cancelling is good but they do this weird thing after pausing video/audio where there is a static sound. not ear piercing but clearly heard and kind of cheap feeling like I would expect from Kmart brand headphones or something. I know what happening it’s cutting sound to save power but I have other much cheaper BT headphones that don’t make any sound when pausing,

overall not the Sony experience I heard about and was expecting. I expected a higher feeling of quality in both physical feel and the electronics side not a snapping static sound when you pause video.

    • Just like JVC, Toshiba, etc

      • I heard Toshiba collapsed and took a lot of smaller japanese brands with it (mostly unknown brands linked to non consumer type products related to electronics/memory etc).

same thing I heard is happening to Mitsubishi. at least first they pulled out of many region markets. can’t remember if I heard it’s already collapsed but going the same way as Toshiba,

I like some Japanese brands and culture so I have always kept an eye on AUD vs JPY.
yen is crashing at the moment last time I checked $1AUD = 108.XX yen. might still be falling. there were plenty of savings to be had, but more recently pricing seems to be normal again (Amazon algorithms?)

someone told me some of the most expensive G-Shock watch such as H1000 are going for half current AUD local price ($1050) on eBay ship from Japan ($550). I had a look and they were selling very fast only 1 or 2 left in stock on each listing (so couldn’t make a post but some sellers 99.X% feedback and plenty of sales).

  • Is this the same Aiwa that used to be a formidable competitor of the Sony Walkman?

    • +2

Same brand name, but just some company providing cheap crap under a licensed name, made in China. Their Portable cassette players were awesome, and gave Sony a run for their money.

    • +2

Growing up in the 70's, Aiwa was a top dog in the US. I think the mergers dilute the product/service.

  • +1

I wonder what the actual specs are…

  • how's this compare to the ones off aliexpress?

    • +2

Specs look like what youd pay for a cheaper screen on ali. It doesnt say but id expect this to be 60hz, and also this is only mini hdmi.

  • I need something as a 2nd monitor for drawing stuff in teams meetings with Microsoft whiteboard. Would this be any good?

    • +1

It would work fine, however if you're purely after a drawing whiteboard you might prefer a usb screen graphics tablet.

  • Touchscreen so it's a good deal for local stock.

  • -1

can I get a awa awa?!

  • Would love to see some feedback from anyone who bought this.

    • +1

I bought one, what do you want to know?

      • +1

I am interested in the brightness (nits), touchpoint sensitivity (how many points) and the general build quality. I would also like to know if the second usb c port on the monitor can be used as pass through power to charge the laptop.

I was also trying to make sense of the review on Big W that states: It's fantastic but if you have a newer samsung tablet or phone you want to connect to it'll be painfull abit out dated unfortunately.

        Thanks

Pick up yesterday and have a test with mobile, laptop, desktop. All working well without any issue through USB C port. Resolution 1080P 60Hz with touch screen. Unable to use touch screen when connecting with mini HDMI, don't know why. Any idea please?

    • +1

My understanding is HDMI isn't two way, so it doesn't carry the data of the touch back to the device to register.

      • Thanks

    • Thanks @Winman. Are you happy with the build quality and the brightness of the display? How is the touch screen sensitivity?

      • +1

It's fantastic for the price. Quite happy with it. Also the screen film is a bonus. So far so good.

  • +2

I purchased two of these, so happy to perform some testing and answer any questions once they arrive. Certainly not as cheap as the other portable monitor deals, but they lacked touchscreen functionality, which I figured might come in handy.

    • does the touch work with apple device ( iphone, ipad, macbook) ?

      • Unfortunately, the only Apple device I have on hand is an iPhone 12 Mini, which doesn't even support video output without an additional adapter (which has since been discontinued) sold by Apple (the reasons why this is necessary are detailed here). However, based on the technical specifications sheets, seemingly all iPad and MacBook models with USB-C will support both video output (via USB-C DisplayPort alternate mode) and touchscreen input, whereas only the iPhone 15 models support this (the iPhone 13 and 14 models have USB-C, but it is seemingly for data and power only). I hope that helps!
