Just bought the halo down jacket from the BCF sale and I am very impressed with it. Very surprised how little noise it makes when I'm walking around and it's very comfortable.

    • What kind of noise may I ask? Thanks.

      • +10

        Swooshing.

        Not great for job interviews.

        • +34

          Costanza pants

        • It's fine if you balance it off with a $5 BigW suit.

          • +2

@Click_It: Tie together your success ensemble with a pair of your most stained New Balance sneakers.

        • +1

But then how will they know how fashionably stylish you are? 🤔

      • +6

Nylon against nylon sort of noise. Your own little star wars 'pew pew' laser battle.

        • This is what I was talking about. Only does it when I make it happen(deliberately make friction between my torso and arms).

    • Try to imitate the North Korean Army march and please report back.

  • +37

Thanks OP - Last years Halo must have shrunk …. along with the rest of my wardrobe.

    • +13

Yes!! I've been trying to tell my partner the same thing. Clothes these days…

    • +1

Ive been telling my partner its seasonal
      During covid my clothes grew
Now everything's open…..it's shrunk but still fits.

    • Did it shrink or did you grow? 🤔

      • +1

What is the most likely conclusion? Obviously some localised phenomenon has caused my clothes to all shrink - really, it's Science!

        • And the older the clothing the more shrinkage occurs.

  • Does anyone know if macpac use merino wool that goes through some type of superwash process?

  • Is this the best jacket in $100-$150 price range? For general city wear.

    • +10

      Yes its a ozbargain Favourite

        Herd mentality

    • If you need a puffer jacket for your instagram posts then yes ;)

    • I have both the hood and non-hood versions, and I now exclusively wear the hood version.

      • i mean, might as well, covered for anything then and it adds basically no weight…

      • I’m trying to find the hooded version but can’t see it online, am I missing something?

    • If you're in the market for a puffer jacket, then I'd say so. I have the hooded version, and I've had it for years. It's pretty much my main winter jacket. I've taken it to overseas where it snowed and it's held up well and I was warm enough.

      • +2

That's more comparable to the uber light, nowhere near as warm as the halo.

  • How is the size of this jacket? I am normally an XS for brand like Connor, not sure if this is too big for me

    • +1

      Size one down.

    • +1

It's been brought up before in older posts, but the general consensus is that the mens one runs larger whereas the womens one runs smaller.

If you live near a Rebel Sport, they stock Macpac. Try both and see what fits best.

      • +1

Yep agree with this. I’m usually a M - L and went with L as I prefer it being roomy and ability to wear layers under. Regret this slightly as it’s not only a bit baggy but sleeves and general length are too long

        • +1

True, but it does mean the sleeves can go over your hands to keep them warm when walking along.

    • +3

You'll definitely need XS. I'm an XS in most shirts and would say the XS Macpac Halo is fairly roomy (plenty of room for layers underneath).

  • +3

The hooded version is still expensive.

    • yep no hood no deal

    • Hooded jacket is $150, down from $300 - is that expensive?

      • +1

Create new account on BCF and get $20 off that will bring down to $129

      • +9

lol don't go by the RRP they are just crazy jacked up prices. You really think that jacket is worth $300?

        • Sure, but the point is not the absolute discount but whether that discount is comparable to the regular jacket discount - ie if the hooded one is a deal as well.

        • Find a comparison and let me know wether their price is "jacked up" !

      • No ozbargainer would pay $300 for the hooded version.

  • Got one from BCF a size down. 👍

  • Doesn't feel warm enough for Canberra.
Also doesn't feel like it's water resistant enough.

Personally, would recommend a fleece + rain jacket on top

    • Dunno why the down vote, as a layered option like this works too

    • +7

Down jackets aren't much good in the rain in general. They need stitching, which will inevitably let water through. Wearing a waterproof jacket over the top isn't too useful as that will compress the down and it won't be as warm.

In terms of warmth, much better than even the thickest fleece, due to the sheer bulk of material (more volume = more insulation). Perfect for cold, dry places like Antarctica or Canberra. Just have another plan for when it rains.

      • +1

        so puffier the warmer?

        • +2

Yep. Same principle as a doona or roof insulation.

    • +1

I sometimes work night shift and walk around in Melbourne at 4am. This jacket keeps me warm, but I'm also a bit fat which helps.

    • NEed thermal, fleece then this jacket on top in Canberra. Toasty!

  • Anyone have a recommended washing method for down jackets in general? Looking for a down laundry detergent specifically for down.

    • handwash?

    • Follow Macpac's recommended steps

      https://www.macpac.com.au/product-care.html

Pure soap or a down-specific cleaner like Nikwax Down Wash.

Guides tend to recommend zippers are zipped up so the zipper doesn't cause damage to the shell during the wash.

Also washing separate, & inside out to protect the outer shell a bit more.

      • Have been following the instructions to the point on my Kathmandu puffer jacket but they come out just as dirty as they were when put in to the washer. Any tips to get rid of the dirt on the jacket? I have been using Grangers down wash concentrate as the down cleaner by the way

        • Sounds difficult, is there any dwr coating?

          • @stickymoo: Yes it does if I am not wrong. The jacket is yellow in color and you can clearly see the black dirt coating over it lol. I googled a lot but couldn't find any potential solutions to actually clean a down jacket and return it to its original self.

            • @ninohax: How old is the jacket?

I wonder if it is just the type & aging dwr coating & not dirt, if it is evenly distributed over the whole jacket. That shows up dull & darker because you have a bright colour. Which wouldn't be as noticeable on darker colours.

Is there any reason it would have a dirt coating over it?

              • @stickymoo: That is an interesting observation. I hadn't given the possibility of an aging DRW a thought. It is quite uniformly distributed across the jacket. I would say almost 75% of the jacket. And No, there is no specific reason for it to have a dirt coating other than the everyday dust and pollution that I encounter on normal usage.

And the jacket is about 2 years old. But I am pretty sure these dark spots or coating had developed about an year back if my memory serves me right. I am quite frustrated and sad at the same time my jacket looks old and dirty in such a short timespan. I might as well chuck into the local Kathmandu store and check if they know anything about this.

This is how it looks like now (My camera is not able to capture the correct shade of yellow. Mine is an Dark Bright yellow jacket compared to the pale yellow seen in the photo)

If you can make out something from the photos do let me know.

                • +1

@ninohax: The jacket isn't even old, I would take it in, & also email after sales support, see who is the most helpful.

                • @ninohax: This is definitely NOT normal dust or pollution. I reckon email Macpac and see what they say. Mention that you have thought about the coating going bad… ;)

Just as a reference HH have some good best practice in their guide too.

Down jackets can be washed in lukewarm water on a gentle cycle.

      – It is important to set the machine on one extra rinse cycle, to ensure that all the detergent has been removed from the down feathers.

      – The jacket will weigh more when wet, so please handle it with care.

      – It is advised to scoop, rather than pull the garment out of the washing machine. Do not shake or twist the garment to remove the excess water at this stage. Rather press out excess water when the jacket is lying flat.

Helly Hansen also recommends washing and drying these kind of garments separate from others to avoid unnecessary friction. Doing so will give the best results. Helly Hansen does not recommend hand washing of down garments as it is very difficult to remove the washing detergent properly. Handwashing will also lead to excessive mechanical tensions on the fabric and seams.

To ensure the garment is dried evenly after washing, we suggest setting a long tumble drying program at medium temperature. You should also add two to three dryer balls into the dryer (tennis balls will also work) when the garment is being dried. This is to help gain extra loft between the down feathers. We do not recommend ironing your down jacket. This will compress the down inside the jacket and might damage the outer fabric.

    • We get down cleaner from Katmandu. I also use it to wash my Doona. Remember to fluff it when drying to avoid clumping. I usually wash them on host summer days.

If its for Sydney, i find this jacket too warm, so i would recommend the uber light jacket which is the same price.

    • the uber light jacket

Is there DIDI light jacket ? Asking for a friend

    • +1

Uber light jacket also packs down to impressive ~ 1.5L bottle size.

    • Agreed, I got the uber light version a few years ago and it's more than warm enough for Brisbane as well.

Added benefit of packing down very small and you can add layers anyway.

  • Is there any discount available further to this price?

  • +1

thanks for the post. I love these, cos they are warm

    • Welcome 🤗

  • +1

Ordered one for me and my Wife. Thanks

  • Besides the trendy label, how is this jacket better than Aldi's upcoming $50 down-filled jacket?

    • Don't know about this aldi jacket specifically, but I once bought a down sleeping bag from aldi and it leaked down something shocking. Took it back for a refund.

  • +1

I still wear one of these Halo jackets I bought back in 2016. It still keeps me warm at home. I hope they still maintain the same quality.

  • +1

Wore my 5 or 6 year old Aldi Puffer in Osaka Jan 20. And it was great
This winter ive been wearing a heavy jacket until this week in Syd. Now in the Aldi puffer and it is still warm.
The front and pocket zips are starting to snag material.

Aldi special buy is tomorrow as well for those who can nab one

    • Saturday 6th it starts.

      • My bad.
Im off sick today so good that you reminded me i might have to work tomorrow

        • Feel better soon!

  • Here to represent the Black Tri-Stars look.

  • What temps would you be wearing the Halo in?

    • -20 to +40, it's good insulation from cold or hot weather

      • +6

Serious question, why on earth would someone wear this at temps up to 40c?

  • +2

Macpac, Kathmandu or North Face? Which one's the best?

    • +5

      Kathmandu - budget option
      Macpac - Midrange
      North Face - Premium

Will you notice any real difference in products with comparable specs? Depends on your use case and whether you are a particularly well informed outdoor gear buyer

    • +1

xiaomi. i'm sure they have one. They have phones, pens, earbuds, and vacuum cleaners. So why not.

  • +2

went to the store. I find the Halo will be too warm for general sydney weather. opted for the Uber light which is the same price.

  • Damn I ordered here . Could have got it for 20 aud cheaper on BCF website ! Can anyone advise how to cancel an online order with Macpac

    • +2

By the time you pay for shipping and an item to use the coupon, not really 20 aud cheaper anymore! But yeah bought from bcf with random wet wipes to get free shipping.

  • I got $20 cashback with $150 spend with my CBA yello rewards.

  • can anyone suggest a nice waterproof down jacket? or a warm light waterproof jacket?

  • I’m torn between the Halo and Uber Light (also $99). I’m in Perth, is the Uber Light warm enough for Perth and south west WA winters?
I’m worried if the Halo is designed for really low temps that it won’t get much use if it makes me too hot, but also not sure if the Uber Light will be warm enough 🤔

    • I have an Uber light and I’m in Melbourne. If it gets really cold I just wear a thermal underneath.
