[macOS] Free: PastAI (Clipboard with AI Text Editing) @ Apple App Store

90

Hey ozbargainers!

**Crucify me/this post if this breaks the ozbargain rules - as the paid version is not yet available ***

I've just released a new macOS app on a limited free basis.

I've been working on this project to make AI tools more useful by building skills into our productivity routine, starting with one-click editing when you copy/paste text.

I'm hope this classifies as a deal, given subscriptions will launch in the product within the month and it will no longer be free.

Keen on your feedback & thoughts and would appreciate if you were gentle!

Hey sorry don't mean to rebuke your tool. From the data collected section (not linked to user) on the app store, it mentions 'User content'. Isn't that a bit of a security issue considering a lot of users put sensitive information like passwords in the clipboard?

True, I'll be concerned to use it if stores user content. Passwords, bank cards info etc are all copy pasted on different basis.

Excluding Bank accounts and credit cards are a good suggestion. I'll look to block this from the clipboard in the next update v1.0.4.

        • v1.0.4 has just been released - where credit cards are now excluded by default from the clipboard - the check when credit card numbers are copied - but it won't look for it in a blob of text (to save processing and on edge cases for now).

I attempted to exclude Bank accounts as well, however they tend not to be consistently formatted - so unlikely to be covered at this point.

Hey! Thanks for the call out.

Passwords such as 1password are not collected in the clipboard, but this relies on a parameter that apps that place data onto the pasteboard need to include - see: http://nspasteboard.org/ - 1Password is a good example and excluded from clipboard capture.

User data not collected for marketing but solely to enable cloud sync and in accordance to apple guidelines.

      • Hey its great that you're actively taking feedback and are aware of security concerns users may have. I would use this app if cloud sync was optional. That way I am sure that all my private info is not leaving my machine. Clipboard history (local) is still quite handy. I understand using AI features means your compute is on cloud (which means data going out) but the AI stuff looks like a premium feature anyways.

Well… It's hardly going to be useful without taking feedback (no matter how challenging) on board!

Understood - I've added opting out to my new backlog - https://pastai.featurebase.app/

Opt out of sync will reduce costs on the product as well.

Deleting the app will clear all data. If you opt back in, (say in the future), only items from then on will be saved.

  • Hey, does this mean that anyone who downloads and uses this will then have to pay after a short period?

If so, isn't this basically just a trial period or is it permanently free for those who download now

    Thanks

    • so far it looks handy

At this point, I'm aiming for a free clipboard app, with a premium subscription solely for the AI-text-editing.

      Free:
      - Clipboard history (local)
      - Clipboard storage (cloud/sync)
      - Clipboard management tools (planned)

      Premium:
      - AI-text-editing
      - Future AI features (organiser, smart search, context-paste - planned)

I'm hoping this model works to cover the cost of calls to the underlying LLM (llama 3, 7b) - which is only invoked when AI tools are used such as the text-editing.

      • Thanks

I don't need another clipboard manager but so far what I have seen, it has been pretty useful

Will keep using it and leave a review

        • Top bloke!

I'm not here to force-feed a crappy product - so keep yours if you love it!

          • @Joz: I use a clipboard manager too but I'm interested - what does AI bring to the table?

            • @gadgetguy: what I have found is it is great for study notes. For example, I copied this paragraph:

Maltreated children experiencing PTSD symptoms are also often found to be experiencing other disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant and conduct disorders, substance abuse, and anxiety, mood, psychotic, and adjustment disorders (Kearney, Wechsler, Kaur, & Lemos- Miller, 2010).

and you get a heap of options to reformat it with a simple click such as:

Comorbid Disorders in Maltreated Children with PTSD Symptoms
Maltreated children experiencing PTSD symptoms are often found to be experiencing other disorders as well.
              • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
              • Oppositional Defiant Disorder
              • Conduct Disorders
              • Substance Abuse
              • Anxiety Disorders
              • Mood Disorders
              • Psychotic Disorders
              • Adjustment Disorders
These findings are based on a study by Kearney, Wechsler, Kaur, and Lemos-Miller (2010).

There are lots of options. I can then copy what is appropriate into my notes

            • @gadgetguy: The most used AI features are Text to:
              1. Table - rich text
              2. Bullet / numbered lists - rich text
              3. Checklist / todo in markdown or rich text.

The AI itself looks to reinterpret what you copied into a prebuilt output.

Keen on adding more functions and types as well.

  • Do you have a place where I can leave feedback, such as a feature request?
