Holy shite, are prices finally going down sensible lane? I remember buying a GTX1070 in 2017 for $640~

      Oof

    • +2

I remember buying a 1080 Ti Asus ROG strix for like $940 in 2018

    • 1070 was around $500 back then even as USD/AUD was near parity.

    • +2

      I got a 1070ti for $520 AUD brand new in 2018

        • +1

Yeah it was a hard find through a 3rd party eBay reseller. But 100% true. I'm still waiting for a $700 4070ti. Would pair nicely with my new 5700x3d. Gonna make this B450 MOBO last 15 years.

          • @Madtrack133: You'll be waiting 2 years

            • @Micsmit: I'll wait till the pricing is what I expect. Or I'll just get a 5090ti for $4k of NVIDIA won't deliver.

  • +2

    12gb. No thanks.

    • +1

Your comment is actually valid especially if you're looking to use this for several years. I'm also hesitating due to the 12 gig. 16 would be perfect but that's Ti super

      • +2

Yup valid point. Hardware unboxed looked into it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx4En-2PzOU

Recommends 16gb vram if enabling ray tracing.

        • -2

16GB is also the recommended amount of ram nowadays..

          • -1

@pinkybrain: More like 32gb, especially since for ddr5 the price difference is pretty minimal and all the ones with good latency/speed are 32gb+.

            • @JerraJones: what I meant is before it was 8GB was the minimum recommended
now it is 16GB minimum recommended for general windows usage + applications and gaming..

if you doing more intensive stuff like VM, then you might want to go for 32GB..

32 GB is also good for new builds if you want some future proofing or do alot of multi-tasking that needs lots of ram

              • -2

@pinkybrain: Nah now 32gb is the minimum, playing Fortnite at 1440p i am hitting my 16gb ram limit, i do have Firefox open at the same time but i have to close a bunch of background tasks or else it gets bad lol.
I can't decide if i should get more ram or just wait it out and upgrade to AM5 and DDR5, i would prefer to buy two 16gb sticks rather than using 4 slots.

Keep coming fanboys. Ngreedia loves you s2

      • +2

They're probably still using 1080p monitors that tiny vram wouldn't be an issue.

      • +3

Kind of amusing that your comment providing relevant discussion from a well-known source is the most downvoted here, and it doesn't seem as though any of the the neggers have even bothered to reply.

      • I didn't neg your comment, but check the first comment on the video you linked.
Also, not saying that I'm an expert, actually just getting back into desktops to start 3D modelling, and mate prices are beyond the sky!

    • +1

As an idiot who bought a 3080 second hand for $630
10g vram is an issue at 3440x1440 and I've been eyeing the new 240hz 4k oleds
      Definitely need 16g for those

    • +1

I wanted ray tracing and dlss so I went with the 4070 super but if you don’t care about that, I think the 7900gre for $815 at Scorptec is better and more future proof

    • What?? My card has 6GB.

  • +6

I been using it for few days now. nice and compact. fans noise is not loud but it is annoying. don't know how to explain it but normally fan had a higher pitch sound. But with a headset on or increasing the speakers volume a bit you wont hear it. keep in mind that this is as basic as a 4070 super can get. while some 4070super and be OC to 2700mhz, this one was stable up to 2600mhz. In gaming (Elden ring DLC) temps were around 72c. After a minor undervolting temps are around 65c.
for $800 i paid for, (shoppingexpress had open box for $800) have zero complaints and hope to keep this for few years.
As for an open box purchase, everything looked like new. there was no seal on the box and i think these come with a 12pin connector adapter, however there was none in the my box.
hope this is useful if you are interested.

      Sounds like coil whine

      • It isnt a coil whine. I had coil whine on my Gigabyte gpu before. anyway good card

    • +1

Been using for a few days too. I know what you mean but I have to really listen for it to hear it so it doesn’t bother me too much. That said my box is on the floor so the distance could help muffle the sound.

      • Thanks for your reply. Like i said it isnt that bad on terms of dB.

  • +5

Price was cheaper just a week ago.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/851707

I guess this only makes sense if you don't have ebay plus. I would also recommend the 3 fans variety. (less noise as it keeps temps cooler) There was a gigabyte 3 fans one for under $900 not long ago as well.

  • 4090 RTX already pushed to its limits on 4K max settings on the latest and upcoming UE5 games. Expect the 4070S to be a 1080p max/1440p medium card for year 2026+ UE5 titles. We are at the point where there is a significant leap in hardware requirements. Would be wise to HODL for next gen, so it can better leverage this new UE5 tech.

  • Would it be worth waiting for the 50 series? That's what my plan has been so far.

    • +3

      yes..
even then you might be able get the 40xx series cheaper if the 50xx are expensive

      also
      Possibility AI bubble busting

I wouldn't consider a blip in their stock price to be a strong indicator of the "AI bubble is bursting" … It's down ~9% from the all time high. It's still higher than it was at the start of the month. It dropped 20% from March to April, but is currently ~40% higher than that time. This just looks like clickbait on the news sites. All I see is a fluctuating share price that's still on the general upwards trend. Typical share market stuff.

        • +1

I really hope the AI bubble does eventually burst cos nvidia is not as competitive in the GPU market cos they no longer needs to be when the AI is making them so much money..

The news.com.au article has some good points by experts (so not clickbait)

"But some think Nvidia has flown too high, too fast, and that this week’s crash is a precursor of more to come – some with drastic consequences.
The problem is, according to one market analyst, that Nvidia’s stock market is overvalued and overhyped – a sure sign of it being held in a bubble.
“Nvidia’s rich valuation is ludicrous — its market cap now exceeds that of the entire FTSE 100, yet its sales are less than four per cent of that index,” said Emily Bowersock Hill, CEO and founding partner of Bowersock Capital Partners."

All I see is a fluctuating share price that's still on the general upwards trend

$646 billion wiped from Nvidia in biggest ever company loss in history of the world
is not a fluctuating share price.

          • +2

@pinkybrain: Yeah, I'd also like more affordable consumer GPUs. Maybe Intel will fill the gap with their cards, which seem to be improving, 2 companies probably isn't enough.

I've got no idea if it's a bubble or if it'll pop, like every other expert who can't consistently beat the market average, but for me this is a fluctuating share price:

            Up ~12% over 7 days
            Down ~13% over 10 days
            Up ~7% in a day
Now slightly above where it was 3 weeks ago…
Still up ~156% for the year…

Maybe it is a sign the bubble is popping, just that it's hardly started; but so far it could also just be investors taking profit after a big run up to become the biggest company. Seems a good time to take profits to me.

A 5070 equivalent most likely won't be out until next year.

  • Sign of things that Super cards will start to drop as well?

My XFX 7900GRE 16gb shipped on Friday.
Looking forward to using it next week.
    $798 delivered.

  • Still very expensive for a card one rung up from a 4060…

Tfw going from the base 70 series to the 80 in 2024 is a 2 x price increase.
