$346 Passport Renewal Fee: Apply Online by 30/6 & Pay within 28 Days (Price Increase from 1/7) @ Australian Passport Office

3281

Thought this would be worthy as a deal post. If not, please report to move to forums.

If you haven't renewed your passport and don't have time to go to post office by tomorrow, you can avoid the passport fee increase on 1st July by submitting your online application and they will honour the old fee for 28 days from application. The fee has to be paid at an Australia post outlet.

There is no mention on website by I called them to confirm.

It seems like the fee is only going up ~$27 to $373.25. but the same sources say the current price is $325, when it's really $346.

No point getting a passport too early for an 8% saving.

  • Don’t think this works. Family member works for post office and has been told they have to enforce higher price from July 1, no matter what the form says.

    • I just did mine and on the checklist the last step is "4. Brind payment of $346.00 Expires 26 Jul 2024 (10 year PPT)"

      • -1

It will say that but when you take it in the system will charge the higher price.

Same thing happens every year apparently and lots of people get caught out.

        • They get caught out because they are doing as instructed….

        • The guy at my local post office also confirmed I would pay the price on the online application, not sure what your family member is on about.

The price is linked to the barcode on online application. The post office is just the middleman.

      • *Bring

      • I don't see any price listed on my child's form that I just did.

    • I called the passport office and they told me you pay the price quoted on online application

    • @HamBoi69

      Can you confirm or deny

  • I have to renew my child’s passport so if I fill online form to generate form which goes to post office before Jul 1st, will I be paying old fees even when i go to PO after July 1st ?

    • +1

I think it's only Adult passport fee that's increasing, children under 16 is $175.You can't print a form for children under 16 like you do for adults. With adults it's only one page whereas for children under 16 you have to print the whole form.

      • no. Children passport cost an uplift to 200 something.

And you CAN print a form for a child by online application, I just did 10 mins ago.

        • Yes, I pre-filled the form and its like a new passport application. So, If generate a pre-filled form before June 30, will I pay old fees or new regardless of submitting before or after june 30th?

    • You cannot renew passport persons under 18 .. has to be a new passport form/process if thats wot u meant

  • The priority processing they charge you extra for is about to go up too, might have the figures wrong but I think it's going from $250 to $290. Was on the phone to them a few days ago and they told me. Can't believe how expensive it is, on top of paying the regular fee for renewal it's pretty harsh… Probably going to have to pay it today, unfortunately for me.

  • +5

They should be giving us a refund for the years they closed the borders and we couldn't travel.

  • +1

child for 175, 5years only. too expensive.

  • +1

Don’t forget to get you photos done at Officework

    • yep which they also jackeddd up — like $18 now… used to be cost 10

      • +1

        Still better then Auspost $21.95

    • Or your photo done at Officeworks.

  • +4

Gov is talking about inflation and cost of living.
And at the back, increasing this already way too expensive service by 15%.

As if they are even concerned about inflation shit.

  • +2

Expensive is not the problem, low quality way below the standard is.

  • Is it only for Adults passport or child as well? I don't think I will have form completed by COB today.

    • Child as well. Renewed my kid one today. You got untill sunday to complete the form

  • -3

"Your password must have at least 14 characters."

Urgh. I hate these non-standard, arbitratry password requirements.

  • Is the Australia Passport the most expensive passport in the world?

    • Mexico is $353.90

        Liechtenstein is $444.

So is this, so called 'deal'….

    • +1

lol then post it as a deal

  • +3

So much for the tax cuts. Everything else is increasing or has increased on a regular basis, for e.g. Rego on my 12 year old car has increased year-on-year while the car value has gone down. Literally costs 2000+ (green+pink slip plus insurance plus rego) to keep the car on road. Why does it cost more to renew a freakin Rego? It's not like they don't take fuel excise and other stuff. They keep touting the discount on Rego for toll users but what about us normal folk who can't afford to or don't need to use toll roads. They removed the 50% discount on NSW licence renewal for good drivers (0-zero demerits) too and in return started returning 1 demerit point back on an annual basis. Even the carrot in a carrot-stick metaphor isn't lucrative enough anymore. Every govt collection is indexed vs. something, council is indexed based on land values, everything else based on CPI (including HECS) but the tax brackets and the Medicare levy surcharge brackets are not indexed. Absolute theft!

    • I felt that 50% renewal discount removal, was really looking forward to it.

The replacement is funny because -1 point when you've been on 0 for years is a massive empty gesture. Let me gain points to lose, then if I rack up 3 safety demerits for good driving, I get the benefit of being caught speeding once without a fine.

      NOW we're talking, that's a real benefit.

    • +2

      Everything else is increasing
Rego on my … car has increased year-on-year

Not so for Govt rego fees in Qld - were frozen in 2023-24, reduced 20% for 2024-25😉

      • I am jealous. In NSW have paid as follows. I am literally fuming and depressed at the current situation. I am planning to create all of these personal stats and then write a grievance filled email to both state and federal representative in my area. Have all the paperwork archived to back that up.

        2017: $357
        2018: $364
        2019: $371
        2020: $377
        2021: $381
        2022: $386
        2023: $400
        2024: $434

        • +3

          Yes, I understand.
Benefit of an upcoming Qld election & massive Surplus (from windfall coal royalties)😉

Also no annual inspections here. Another saving.
Of course that doesn't mean a 5+ year old car is safe on Qld roads. At least NSW inspections should make it safer…

Then there are the 50c public transport trial & $1000 electricity rebate per household…

To limit the effect of those promises, the LNP has agreed to match ALP.

          • @INFIDEL: Yes but the savings only come once every 4 years. After that the rip off restarts harder than before! No matter who wins the election.

            • @Mad Max: Yes but Qld has elections every 4 3 years😉 So even more frequent savings💰

Qld has had the electricity rebate every year for so many years. Just gets bigger each year💰
Electricity production & distribution is Govt owned… unlike some States that sold there's!

          • @INFIDEL: The billions of dollars surpluses haven't helped us too much here in WA, they throw us a bone every now and again but still seems like we are paying out the arse for everything…

If only Australia was like the countries that paid mining royalties to it's citizens..

        • In WA we dont have any green/pink slips but insurance for personal injury to others is part of rego. No min requirement for CTP vehicle insurance though.

Last year the 12 month rego on a 10 year old i30 was $842.90 consisting of:

          License fee: 363.90
          Insurance: 387.36
          GST on insurance: 38.74
Insurance duty: 42.60 (yes, still paying duty as well as GST 😡)
          Recording fee: 10.30

    • +1

Give with one hand, take with the other.

But yeh, they'll stand there and tell us "we know cost of living is so high" all the while continuing to increase fees for utilities, rates, rego, NBN and whatever else..

  • I remember renewing my passport in late February 2020 :(

    • +1

      Great timing.

  • +4

Mathematically, if your passport expires within 10 months you will save up to $28 renewing now. Outside of 10 months you will lose value based on the validity of your current passport's original fee on a monthly pro-rata basis.

If your passport does not expire within 10 months, there is no savings here.

    • +1

Does your mathematical calculation take into account the factor of not being able to travel on a passport with a <6 month expiration date?

      • +1

Isn't there also that if you don't plan to travel even close to after expiry of your current passport then having no valid passport for 2 years say is an even bigger saving?

        • +1

          I haven't had a passport since 2006/7.
Would've gone through 2 renewals by now.
          Look at all my savings.

          • @Crownie: Was more in relation to that sometimes a new passport is more expensive than a renewal, and is definitely a lot more work.

            • @kulprit: A new passport is definitely a lot more work over a renewal.
See this for the requirements for a renewal.

              • @Crownie: I'm sure that page used to say it needed to be expired within a certain time frame, but nothing there now.

                • @kulprit: It says "For a renewal, you will need a passport that meets all the following: was issued on or after 1 January 2006"
So it could have expired 8 years ago but is still able to be renewed

      • not able to travel on a passport with a <6 month expiration date?

        Not according to passport.gov.au!
Only for entry to some countries

    • Mine expires in exactly 10 months.

      Yeeeeeeeee baby

  • -1

Can you submit online before June 30, then get the photo done within 28 days? Need to get kids passports sorted but don't have photos just yet.

    • +1

      Yes for this.

    • +1

You hand over the photos at the same time you lodge at the post office.

    • +1

Yes, you can. You only need the photos during submission.

    • +3

I'm at post office right now. Adult price is locked if you do the online application. Kids passports prices aren't locked as they are logged in person (not online). Adults photos can be taken any time before going to the post office

      • +1

That is 100% correct. For kids passport now it is too late, unless you can make an appointment tomorrow (Saturday), because for kids passport, you have to go to post office for interview and payment. Fee will be at that day amount, you can't locked it for 28 days like adult passport.

      • thanks to share, was trying to lock kids' before last minute, now save time to go sleep :)

    • +1

      Nope!

  • What date will a new passport expiry be? The same month as the old one or does it change month according to when you apply? Example : Passport set to expire in October. Renew now, will the expiry date still be October or would be July (assuming it is processed in that month)? Thanks.

    • +2

10 years from when you receive it. You lose any time remaining on your current passport and it does not "stack" or rollover.

    • July

    • The old passport date will be forfeited so your new one will expire in July 2034.

    • +1

It's not like our drivers licence which is the real scam.
This starts when they issue it.

  • Is this still worth it for me if my passport doesn’t expire until June 2025?

    • +1

      no

    • +1

      Yes…
      Increased Fees from July 2024
      New Passport Costs
From July 1, 2024, the updated passport fees will be:

10-year passport (for persons 16 and over): $398.00
      5-year passport (for children under 16): $201.00
5-year passport (optional for persons 75 and over): $201.00
      Emergency passport: $250.00
      Replacement passport: $250.00

Adult passport increase is 15%, you got 1 year remaining which is out of 10 years (about 10%) of value. Increase percentage is morethan the 5% than the current remaining pecentage. You will save 5%.

  • Call in, get the form sent via email and the expiry will state 2099

    • big if true

  • +2

what a rip off. If you're not traveling till the end of the year it's probably better value to wait 5 months and get 5 more months on your passport.

    • How do you know that you are not going to die in the next 10 years?

    • +1

Not a good idea if you have old relatives living overseas and need to have a passport ready on standby in case of an emergency

  • So it seems that it used to be to renew a passport it has to be current or within 3 years of it's expiry.
The current rules page doesn't say anything about the 3 year rule, do now can it always be a renewal?

So if I'm not travelling in the foreseeable future I'm better off just not renewing it all at.

    • It appears that a new passport fee is the same as a renewal fee.
See this for the requirements for a renewal.

    • +1

      see
as long as it was issued 1 Jan 2006 or later, it can be renewed.
mine expired in 2020 and I haven't renewed it yet… I won't until an overseas trip is on the cards

      • Thanks. Your link just went to the main deal though

  • +5

To be honest, passports should be free

  • +3

I'd love to know the reason they give for increasing the passport fees by 15% in a year. That's not "inflation", that's called "price gouging". You know, the sort of thing that Albanese absconds the supermarkets for doing.
Meanwhile, Jim Chalmers pinky swears he's doing everything he can to fight inflation.
We deserve the politicians we get…

    • +1

Reason: part of the recouping budget back hole / deficit

    • +1

call the ACCC. We need another federal bureaucracy for competition.

    • +1

I'd love to know the reason they give

Not sure of the reason they give, but the ultimate reason is highly inefficient public services. Anything the Gov does cost at least double what it costs everyone else, which is why you should want them involved in as little as possible.

  • +1

Thanks heaps for this. Been meaning to renew for a while and just completed the online application. Now have 4 weeks to submit photos & application in a post office and according to the checklist, the quoted $346 stands until then 🙏

  • My passport expired 2 1/2 years ago, how long do I have before the renewal period runs out and I have to get a new one?
