[QLD] 20% off Light Vehicle Registration Fees for 1 Year @ QLD Government

2050

As reported -

The Miles Government has today announced further cost of living relief for Queenslanders.
Queensland registration fees will be cut by 20 per cent, set to put hundreds back in the pockets of 5.7 million car owners.
The 20 per cent reduction will apply to all light vehicle registrations for a 12-month period from 16 September 2024.
Notice of the 20 per cent discount will start to appear on renewal notices sent to customers from 5 August.
The reduction will apply to the registration fee and the traffic improvement fee for all light vehicles, regardless of purpose of use and will apply to motorcycles and trailers.
It follows Premier Steven Miles putting a freeze on rego costs in December 2023.
The move is backed by a $435 million investment by the State Government, as part of the upcoming state budget.
The reduction will see a 12-month registration bill for a private use four-cylinder vehicle reduce by almost $85, bringing registration fees down to $338.75, excluding CTP.
For vehicles registered on a pensioner concession the reduction will be nearly $50 and will reduce registration fees down to $194.50, excluding CTP.

dam, paid one year rego last month. Will they refund the difference?

    • +1

      Ditto. Just paid yesterday

      • If I knew about this, I would have only paid for 6months

        • same!

        • +2

The reduction is available for a year, so if you did a 6 month renewal now you’d still only be able to take advantage of it once, or am I missing something?

        • Luckily only paid for 6 months the other day.

    • +3

Glad only paid for 6 months last month.

    • +11

The promo is good for 1 year so next year, you will get the discount.

      • +27

        *May not apply after election?

      • -1

Another desperate vote buying move by this failed Labor Government
        Take the money and RUN!

    • +3

Pay by the month is the way to go! Winning.😋

      • +8

No it's not. You pay extra in fees. Best to pay for 12 months, or pay for 6months if your rego is due between 16 September and 16 March and then renew at 12 months.

Also the 20% off, is 20% off the registration component of your renal. EV's and <4 cylinder vehicles will save <10%. 5 cylinder and larger will save >10%. No-one will save 20% on their renewal because the traffic improvement and CTP components will not be discounted.

        • +1

Its just 19$ more for 12 months vs monthly debit.

          • +8

@fwhite: $19 on a bargain website is big bucks

            • +3

@pyr0: That is around %1.9 for a 6cyl ($1003). A true ozbargainer would rather put the money in a savings account, instead of lending it to the govt.

              • +1

@fwhite: Too right. At 5% you would make more in interest than the $19 fee.

          • @fwhite: This reduction is only about $85/yr or $50 for pensioners.

        • This completely depends. I pay by rego monthly, not because I can’t afford to pay in full, but because I sell cars fairly often, and selling a car with 6+ months of rego on it rather than 1 month would negate 20+ years of savings

          • @WhatWouldBiggieDo: I wouldn't buy a car with one month of rego left, that just comes off your asking price. 6 months is alright for a bit more cost over 12 months.

      • +1

Loving that flexibility! Within a month of 16 September 2024 ticking over, we'll get to swoop up on that offer.

    • nope

    • +1

It's for a 12 month period, so when your rego comes up for renewal in May next year, it'll be discounted by 20%

      • +1

Got it, this is not a permanent reduction. It is only for a 12-month period from sept for 1 year renewals.

    • If you renew next year you'll pay at the lower price since you'll still be in the discount period right?

Edit: never mind, saw the other comments

  • typical - just paid for my two vehicles for 12 months a week ago!

    Gotta buy them votes!!!

      Hello, Melbourne!

The most bankrupt state is Victoria but we have been full communist for over a decade so wadda ya expect

        • +29

          full communist

The debating points of a true scholar.

        • -4

"full communist for over a decade"

when English is too hard but you still want to debate

        • +4

Out of interest do you actually understand the definition of ‘communist’?

There has NEVER been a communist state/nation. Socialist, sure. But never communist. Though every time people such as yourself claim that Victoria has gone ‘full communist’ it’s actually a little bit funny because I’m confident it’s ‘facist’ that your beautiful mind means but you don’t understand the nuance between the two.

          • +5

@CommanderCrumbcake: Yeah, every time they tried communism in the last 100 years the right people were not in charge, so of course it wasn’t true communism and didn’t work.
Next time, when I get to run a communist state, it will work.

            But yeah Victoria isn’t communist.

        • +4

Looks like you triggered a couple of commies

          • +1

@commiewealth: Imagine building your OzBargain profile around a political statement that is fundamentally false.

      • +11

        LOL, Melbourne is so broke.
Can't even host the Comm Games, we got the Olympics son.

        • Ikr, hellbourne should sit back and enjoy their crappy weather

        • +1

Federal Gov picked up the tab didnt they? Pretty sure that's what I read some time ago.

    • +16

This is both desperate and irresponsible long term.

      • +4

Essentially sums up every state goverment bar WA who can do what they please because mining will bring in endless $$

        • +9

Yep. So the RBA has been hiking (they don’t tell you but this is actually to increase unemployment) then a desperate state govt floods everyone with money, making the RBA job even more destructive. Brake and accelerate, great for the economy engine!

          • -3

@Appleboat: Bad for poor people thats for sure same people voting for communism are being screwed by it

If you're assest rich then high inflation is good for you as usually the $$$ flows to you

            • +11

@Trying2SaveABuck: If QLD had domestically reserved even a tiny bit of its massive gas reserves like WA then everyone in the state would be much better off right now - especially lower SES. So corrupt.

              • -1

@Appleboat: What needs to happen to reduce Qld energy prices is to stop selling power south. Then local supply increases and price falls. This incidentally would cause a boom economically, although the government would have reduced earnings for not selling power to the southerners.
The other problem is that the economic boom means a heap more Victorians than currently migrate will move north and bring their politics with them.

            • +2

              @Trying2SaveABuck:

              voting for communism

              That's twice.
If you post it one more time in short succession, is it like Beetlejuice, except Karl Marx appears?

          • +1

            @Appleboat: this doesnt flood anything

            just lowers a forced expense

            • +1

@jabroni: Add it to all the others, it adds up, don’t stick your head in the sand. Also, it is your money (non-voluntary taxes) they are so generously giving back to you. Neat trick that. Also a nice change from sneakily giving your money to their donors.

              • +2

@Appleboat: add it to what? electricity?

those struggling will save the money for future rate hikes

those it doesn't impact much are already spending hence the record car sales, record property sales, record retail spending etc

                • +3

@jabroni: 50c public transport fares, ~$1000 energy rebates, etc and more on the way no doubt before the election

                  • +2

@Appleboat: and leave the LNP holding the can when ALP loose hahaha win win for ALP in many ways

          • -1

@Appleboat: That's it, keep Rupert's talking points going.

            • +1

@doobes: Cope. This is pork barrelling with the intention of buying votes, not because the ALP holds genuine concern for voters.

              • +3

@Ham Dragon: Pork Barreling is where the money is spent in a very area to win, this, the electricity subsidy and cheap public transport are for whole state so it's just normal vote buying, which every gov't has done for all time. So, when the newspaper and radio hosts try to paint this as anything but good for the general public, you know there's probably a Murdoch hand up someone's puppet hole.

                • +2

@Nalar: Considering the ALP is predicted to be wiped out, it's most certainly pork barrelling in the manner you describe, it's just this time they're targeting the entire state instead of a swing or bell weather electorate. The timing of these announcements are particularly cynical.

              • @Ham Dragon: This is simply not what pork barreling is, as Nalar points out. You might as well join the poster screaming communism.

Lowering a fixed cost for most people is sound policy for lowering cost of living; which is pretty much the issue of most concern to people.

                • +2

@mj7312: Nonsense, cost of living pressures have been affecting Queenslanders for at least a year. If this really was a genuine measure to assist people doing it tough they would have acted much earlier, but it's not, it's a desperate & cynical attempt to avoid being wiped out at the polling booth.

        • Until it doesn't.

      • how so? a $85/yr/car reduction in revenue is hardly a dent in the state budget. plenty of more money wasted on rebates and direct support of the mining industry. But at least Qld is upping the royalty fees in the likes of coal to help pay for this stuff.

unless you live in inner Brisbane, you need a car to travel in Queensland. So this is a direct saving to most households. I haven't seen the Qld budget but I'll bet it's cross subsidised by a hefty increase in fines. Just like the 50c public fare will see a 10% increase in fare evasion fines. (~$330 I believe). The govt giveth (to make the media cycle) and they taketh (which doesn't make the media cycle).

      • Careful there, I was told by idiots saying that government debt is infinitely lived, so they can spend all they want!

    • +4

Maybe complain about Victoria in Vic, not Qld Deals🤔
But seems like Victorians like to do that😜

Times change - not everyone goes and updates their profiles on websites where it doesn't matter.

  • +1

    What about motorcycles?

    • +2

Queensland registration fees will be cut by 20 per cent
      Deal title needs updating. Reported.

    • +4

      They’re included.

    • What about boats and trailers?

    • What about my 1 tonne ute? Is it classed as a "light vehicle?"

      • +1

When it comes to rego in QLD light vehicle means under 4.5t gvm. Heavy vehicles being over 4.5t gvm(trucks/buses). So unless by "1 tonne ute" you mean an F350, you should be covered.

        • Thanks, my ute has carrying capacity of 1 tonne. I coudn't find any info on T'port dept site

Tilts head back and laughs in Brisbane

      • +3

… In the nice warm sun here🌞

      • +1

You won’t be laughing next year when all of a sudden your electricity, rego and bus fares all suddenly switch back to full price all around the same time.

        • +1

          Found the Melbourner

        • +1

Almost all Deals are time limited & expire. So are these.

But we save lots of money until then.
And we will still have the sunny warm weather & be laughing🌞

          Lol! Poor you😜

          • @INFIDEL: So promise not to moan when it happens? even if the ALP lose anyway?

            • +1

              @entropysbane: I promise😄

When I receive a gift, I say thanks! NOT "I want MORE!!" - That is dependency😜

I don't need to work, but travel overseas a lot on holiday - so a change of Govt will hardly be noticed - by me😉
              Almost never use a car.

My electricity is effectively free (before the $1K + $300 promised rebates) - by regularly switching retailers for the incentives & using little.

Worked out how to live a good life on very little. Retired from my CBD corporate consultancy business in my 30's. (People such as LNP Minister of Qld Govt sought my highly paid advice😉)

So I'll be the least affected.
No crying over spilt electoral promises for me - promise😄

    • $624 this week for one car. Plus CTP $430. Grrr

    • NSW is subsidsing other states in terms of GST

  • Mines due first week of October, how good

  • +1

Hope they follow suit in WA :o

    $800 for a 4cyl buzzbox :/

  • +1

victoria will never do any of this causee we are too busy spending money on cancelling the commonwealth games and east west link

    • +10

They'll just cover those projects by installing more speed cameras

    • +2

WGAF about the games? Really, anyone?

      • +2

its a well known fact around the world the cost to build "new" infrastructure for olympics or commonwealth games doesnt translate in a net profit for the place its held

we should be using existing infrastructure on the east coast for the brisbane olympics and just call it "the australian olympics" and part of your olympic ticket includes transport from brisbane city to the city the event is in.

        • That's a lot of money to be pumped into avgas instead of infrastructure. Neither are viable.

I do agree about sharing it across the East Coast though. Would be a shitfight to sort out the ceremonies and events though.

    • +1

What about the train from nowhere to nowhere that has no economic benefit!

  • +2

    NSW got nothing

    • +1

Come on. We've got no power, no gas, no water, no houses, pot holed roads. My rego renewal stunned me (again).
      What more do you want?

      • +2

Everywhere in Australia sucks. It’s what happens when weak people are in leadership. Going to get worse too.

    • -1

good observation. qld is in fact not in nsw and miles is not the premier of nsw

      gold star

    • It’s ok, you got underreporting of state debt which isn’t bad.

      • +1

its ok, you guys have out of control youth violence

        • And huge debt.

  • +1

Partner paid for 6 months last night, my car due in 1 month, wheeeeeee.

    • +1

You pay more by paying 6 months.. not really a wheee moment.
