Curious - Do You Own a Luxury Watch?

I know this is OzBargain, but I'm sure we have a few watch peeps in here.

If so, what brand(s)? Specify the model if you want to. And maybe why you bought it.

A random watch lux pyramid tier l found off a quick google search.

    What is a watch?

      • Gee! … that bastard rip you off badly … USD$10 max …

    • +3

Luxury watches are very much IYKYK.

The people who know > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zq2a1kx1j_M

      • +2

        Cruel in every respect.

        • +1

          100%

Raw and relentless chaos, volume and warranted and unwarranted criticism.

He strikes me as a public servant. Does anyone know what he does for a living?

          • @OG Puppy Banana: Hahaha I've got a spot spot for Archie as me and my mates have gotten a lot of mileage out of his quotes but he definitely gives off a strong public servant vibe. He does IT desktop support I believe.

      • +1

        Archie is goated.

    • Whilst you're comparing drift. My garmin drifts exactly by 0s everyday.

    • You’re right, I have a Cartier Santos Large, but no one would know. Not that I want them to either. Most people wear smart watches but not my thing.

Been thinking of the IWC pilot chrono 43 as my next watch.

According to your pyramid I don't own a 'luxury watch' but I do have a few pleb watches. Currently wearing a Seiko presage cocktail. I bought it as a dress watch but I love it so much I wear it every day.

I also like old, unique things. I've got an old restored South Bend pocket watch. And a couple of old Russian wrist watches.

For me, even if money was no object, I'd be after a snowflake Grand Seiko. I think some of those high end watches are ugly and people only wear them for the clout, not the style.

    • The GS look great and understated. Really like the look of them.

    • Love the idea of a white GS. Such superb skill done by amazing craftspeople. Swiss makers have their technological wonders and European sensibilities, but the Japanese have absolutely nailed simplicity and elegant design (which also serve to hide some of the most accurate and capable movements ever made). I don’t want showy bling, give me something that tells a story with its sheer understatement.

  • That tier pyramid is wankerish (money talks, wealth whispers). I've got a few Casio's but the one I wear every day is my Galaxy Watch 4, at the time it cost me the most and I couldn't imagine not having the smart features available at all times (I use it for home automations, notifications etc.). Sadly like most smart watches it's disposable (will probably cease to function in a few years). I know my Casio's will last forever.

  • Seiko here. Love the classic face, and they last forever. Might shout myself a vintage Longine one day. I understand people want to wear smart watches for their functionality, but I find them ugly and huge.

Bought myself an "entry level" to celebrate getting my PhD, I liked the traditional feel to it all.

  • What if I have an Omega Swatch MoonSwatch?

    • +1

Then you have a nice looking Swatch

  • +1

I have a ‘not luxury’ watch that I paid luxury price for. Still like my Tissot.

  • Couple of bottom teir watches, surprised they're bottom teir.
    I've seen other peoples TAG's and what-not.
I dont think they have any gain over my watches expect brand-value.
Money down the toilet if you ask me

  • +1

Partner bought me a Longines for our engagement a few years ago, I love it, though I don't often wear it in fear of scratching it up ha. Also I wear a cheapo mi band 8 just for steps/sleep tracking anyway most of the time.

  • Love love the Invicta Submariner.

  • +1

I have a Seiko and a Citizen, so "no", according to that chart.

I also have an Edox which isn't on the chart at all so I don't know if that counts or not.

  • -2

    Is Apple Watch Ultra luxury?

    • Survey only includes DUMB watches.

    • Compared to luxury dumb watches, no. $1,000 or whatever is like an ordinary watch to watch aficionados, the kind of watch you wear to the Monarch Theatre with seven year old Batman, because you don't care if it gets stolen.

      • OK, I selected 'No" then

  • +3

I prefer watches from the bottom tier - Citizen, Seiko, etc.

    • China names them Japanese copies Netizen!

  • +1

Got a citizen GN-4W-S 12G, still kicking after 12 years with solar charge battery. Also got a Casio G for sport. My fav watch is actually the Hamilton Interstellar Khaki Field
Murph Auto, one from the movie Interstellar which Murph Cooper wears.

  • The pyramid isn't entirely accurate. Blancpain is definitely Rolex tier carrier should be dropped to where blancpain. Grand Seiko should also be in line with cartier/Rolex.
I own a GS, longines frederique constant (similar to Maurice LaCroix) or is, Ball again similar to Oris in tier.
Plan is to get a blancpain and Vacheron I've scrapped Rolex because of their crappy process to buy a watch you like.
I instead got the steel dive 1993 to replace gmt master 2

    • +2

Grand Seiko are just epic. The value for money is insane.

  • -8

I have an Apple Watch 7. I'd consider it a luxury watch, as it looks better than any other watch I've owned.

It has the time, date, weather, heart rate, step counter/activity tracker, messages, and countdown timer all on a single watch face, which I'd say is fairly luxurious.

    • +4

I'll be the AH everyone else is thinking. You have bad taste and also no idea what a luxury watch is.

      • -1

You’d be surprised how good it looks. With a nice leather band from eBay, and starlight frame, it’s much better than some other Apple Watch colours. Screen is bright and clear, crown has a nice clicky feel when you turn it.

Functionality is definitely luxurious, saves me having to get my phone out all the time for information. And the heart rate and step tracking are accurate. I’m two taps away from countless preset timers which I use all the time for cooking. It’s much more fiddly to get your phone out to do the same.

    • Ignore what others say - you wear what you like and makes you happy. The vast majority of the population don’t care what you’ve got on your wrist. If someone wants to wear a smartwatch that’s okay with me. I moved away from an Apple Watch for the exact reasons you stated: I found they did too much and I disliked the distractions. Now I wear traditional watches and enjoy them for their individual traits.

  • I have a few watches in my collection and definitely try to downsize over the years. My daily is a Tudor Black Bay GMT - first luxury watch after eyeing the Black Bay 58 and IWC Pilot XVIII for a long time. I also rotate between a Tissot PRX Tiffany Blue dial and a vintage King Seiko (both gifts) and my Garmin Epix 2. I previously had a Seiko Presage and Citizen Titanium Eco-Drive which I purchased through deals thanks to Ozbargain and Deepak at StarBuy but I keep gravitating back to wearing my Tudor daily.
I have a large shortlist of watches as my next purchase and that list keeps growing (GS Shunbun, Speedy Sapphire 3861, Omega Aqua Terra). I enjoy watches and if there is anything I would save up and splurge on, it would definitely be watches!

    • Shunbun is a beauty!

  • +1

Phone does the same job also a clock in my car and one on the wall at home. Havent worn a watch since i was a kid.

    • +4

Who needs a watch when you've got a phone.

      • +3

Who needs a 75" OLED TV when you've got a phone.

        • That analogy doesn’t work. There’s so much more advantages a large screen has over a phone. A luxury watch has ZERO advantages over a phone apart from its resale/sentimental value.

    • +6

      groan.

      I hate this argument.

BuT mY PhoNe tEllS ThE TimE.

Noone is wearing a $20k watch to tell the time. It's jewellery, a fashion accessory to look good/feel good.

      • Some guys won’t get it coz they simply don’t wear jewellery

        • In my experience the guys who go on about how watches are dumb and a waste of time are the same guys who spend hundreds on sports jerseys to be promotional billboards for vodafone.

          • @coffeeinmyveins: What about guys who modify their cars?

          • @coffeeinmyveins: To be fair most of them buy it for the inspiration they get from the person the jersey represents. Like having a mural of Muhammad Ali.

  • +4

I have several luxury watches. My daily is the Rolex Pepsi GMT, I was young and managed to get my hands on one so thought why not. Also just got a Skydweller for under retail as well which is now my daily.

Also have been handed a 1960’s Seamaster from my grandparents and about to purchase an Omega sea master.

    • +1

daily is the Rolex Pepsi GMT

Watches are for wasps that think they still hold meaning.

  • +1

I wear a Longines that my ex bought me that is still going strong after 28 years with no services. My local male pharmacist owner wears a Rolex covered in diamonds. I’d be terrified someone would cut my arm off for it.

    • Exactly why I wouldn’t buy a really, really expensive watch. If you can afford one then you’d better be able to afford hiring the retinue of security personnel to follow you around. A couple of grand is enough to get a very nice-looking watch that tells accurate time, and is far less likely to attract the attention of someone wanted to mug you for it.

  • +1

    I got a Samsung Watch 3… I reckon that's pretty luxurious tbh.

  • +1

My favourite is the Seiko G757 4010 my dad bought for me from Japan in the 80s.

Going prices on eBay are over $1000. Maybe I should retro a bit and change the battery and buy a new strap for it and try to impress my boss ;)

  • +1

Not sure I'd consider it luxury, but have a couple of swatch group automatics from Tissot & Hamilton.

Looking to add a Mido Multifort Patrimony and Hamilton Murph 38 over the coming year.

Looking into a couple of Longines but can't yet bring myself to pay the asking price..

  • +2

I believe luxury watches should be mechanical and not battery-operated. So, a few watches on the list should go out.

    • Why what's wrong with quartz?

    • Patek make quartz watches. Audemars Piguet, Cartier and Omega have all had quartz watches in their lineup in recent times. Even Rolex have made quartz watches in the past. All these brands have long and storied histories so I don't know what you're talking about.

  • +1

Being on OzBargain how could I not bring up the vintage Must de Cartier i scored for $5

    • @timothyb how??

      • Antique store thought it was a fake. It was in pretty bad condition so it didnt look legit but all the markers were there. IYKYK

  • I own a Moonphase 2-dial. I think the moon phase looks great, and it can track my partner's cycle. I bought it a few years ago for $14.5k - it now retails at $18.5k - call it cost of living inflation I guess.

    https://www.omegawatches.com/en-au/watch-omega-speedmaster-m…

I've been trying to get my hands on a Daytona or PP5205g for a while but can't find one at retail.

    • +1

      Nice one!

Used to be my dream watch back in 2018

  • I have a few in the pyramid tiers 2, 3 & 4.

  • Not much of a watch person. Got a Tag, a Linjer (when did used to offer unbranded watches), and a Seiko that my brother built with OEM parts. The Seiko is the daily now because i appreciate his effort, otherwise… its another thing that i have to remember to wear…

  • Currently have a Seiko SSC813P and a Casio Lineage LCW-M100TSE. Have previously owned and sold off (in no particular order) Swatch, Casio (Edifice), Casio (G-Shock), Frederique Constant, Cadisen and Pagani Design.

For me, I feel watches have dimnishing returns once you spend past a certain point - with the availability of Chinese clomages like San Martin these days, I would say the $300 range (sapphire crystal, automatic movement, solid end links, milled clasp). Which is why I personally don't spend $$$ on luxury brands.

  • +1

I think it is important to have a luxury time piece, like having a nice tailored suit.
I own a Christopher Ward C63 Aquitaine, I think its the best looking divewatch/everyday watch for its price.
I also own two JLC Reversos, I love the reversos, classic, classy, timeless, unique!

  • +2

I would totally love to own a rolex or even just an Omega watch, but at the same time, I already love the ones that I do have. Seiko, Citizen and Casio watches are pretty affordable brands for some gorgeous looking watches. So even if i never buy a luxury watch, im pretty content as it is.

Currently in love with my White dial Seiko Presage Zen garden

    • That’s a lovely watch, the Japanese do dials so well with elegance and simplicity.

  • I have a Tag and a Tissot. The Tissot keeps better time but the Tag looks beautiful. I just picked my Tag up today from repairs (under warranty) as it started gaining about 15 seconds per minute.

I went on the waitlist for a Rolex Date-just a couple of years ago but they never contacted me and I'm now over it and don't even want one anymore. The Tag looks nicer anyway, even if it doesn't have the same status. I have heard Tag being described as "the Nickelback of watches". I don't care - I think it's a great watch.

  • OP here. Interesting comments! Relatively new on my watch journey and quickly realising it's a slippery slope ._.

In an ideal world, next purchase would be a JLC reverso / perhaps a cartier tank. Need a dress watch as I already have a diver and a chrono.

Started with the ozbargain classic - Seiko cocktail.

    • Started with the ozbargain classic - Seiko cocktail.

This is where everyone starts their dress watch journey and there's a lot of choice.

If you need a dress watch, have you considered Grand Seiko?

Sure, if you're going for brand recognition get a JLC/Cartier, which I'm thinking is what you're after by choosing those two, but GS is just another level.

      • I personally think there's too much choice with GS (i.e. dial variations) that I haven't really been set on a particular one. But probably down the line, might get one, just not on the immediate horizon.

I do like the novelty factor of the JLC case mechanism haha.

        • If you ignore their sports line and focus on the dress watch line, it's a smaller selection.

And then if you decide you want Spring Drive, even better. Just get a snowflake or a skyflake like I did.

  • -3

Aren’t overpriced brands like Rolex usually for money laundering?

    • -2

      Shhh don't tell people.

      • +1

Pretty bad way to launder money. You spend years jumping through hoops and kissing the arse of authorised dealers. ADs can't always sell to the same person, so poor supply, and they unbox/remove stickers upon purchase so you can't flip them as new. The market is also quite volatile. Oh, and let's not forget Chrono24's cut.

I can't think of a worse way to launder money. Lego, imported cigarettes, nail salons, etc., all would be better bets.

        • They aren’t buying from AD’s. They’re buying watches on secondary markets using money from illegal activities, drugs, gambling etc. Then selling the watches elsewhere and effectively turning the money clean again. It’s also a very easy method to move money in and out of the country.

          • @Pelicannn: They're buying secondhand watches in bulk? From what secondary market, and selling where? Rolexes aren't even that big ticket, How exactly does one off-load hundreds of Rolexes without taking a bath vs buying a house. And what if the grey market goes down the toilet, like it has lately?

            • @SydStrand: I didn’t say Rolex, top comment did. Plenty of single watches from AP or PP worth half a mil. You’re right Rolex are pocket change for the most part. That being said if you think there isn’t a secondary watch market you’re wrong on that. I know a few grey market dealers sitting on millions in stock alone.

              • @Pelicannn: Fair enough. For big ticket watches, it can potentially be profitable to move around discretely. But Rolexes would be a giant PITA, even if you have people on both ends.

That being said if you think there isn’t a secondary watch market you’re wrong on that. I know a few grey market dealers sitting on millions in stock alone.

I know there's a secondary market, and professional resellers, but they're not the ones dumping hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of stock at a time, which is something you can do by flipping a single property.

            • @SydStrand: Take a look in the second hand watch stores in the global financial centres: Tokyo, New York, London. They literally have whole rows of shops with cases full of watches that fetch five or six figures. An easy way to move money around without getting caught.

    • +2

Not sure why the downvotes. This is partially true.

Of recent times, watches have been some of the EASIEST methods to move hundreds of thousands of dollars overseas without drawing attention to anyone. Put 500k in a suitcase and it probably isn’t leaving the airport except in the hands of the AFP. Put a Patek Phillipe Nautilus on your wrist and you can walk out of the country with 500k and nobody would bat an eyelid.

  • I'm into vintage gold tone quartz watches from 70s/80s off eBay, mostly Seikos and Sharps. Cheap watches that aren't oversized monstrosities that look like they were designed for a 12 year old.

  • Given the number of asians that use Ozbargain i'd say it's quite high.

I have asian relatives and materialistic things rate quite highly with them. I only own a Tag Heuer but have my eyes on a Rolex, not really into collecting, only have one wrist after all.
Personally the market has gone to sh1t though with them putting you on 'waitlists' and you have to plead your case why you should get a chance to buy one. The replica market has definitely caught up because no one wants to wait 2 years for a chance to buy a watch. Hell i'd buy one given that there's barely any difference nowadays.

None of my caucasian friends really care about them, the most they'd spend is on a Garmin or Iwatch.

    • -5

Given the number of asians that use Ozbargain

Just wow. Pretty sure that looking for a bargain isn't exclusive to a race.

      • +3

Bud, it's not racist when the stats back it up.

        There's nothing racist in it.

        • -3

Sorry, where are the stats? I am curious

          • +4

@Duckie2hh: There have been informal polls and threads over the years, and Asian males between 20-40 living in capital cities are the biggest chunk. Have you seen photos from OZB meet ups? Why do you think there are so many GPU deals.

    • Market for Rolex hasn't 'gone to sh1t'. It's just the game they make you play. I refuse to buy off them. Have better things to do with my time than play some silly game in order to increase their brand desirability in the eyes of the plebs. Everyone who's woken up to this just goes and buys a Grand Seiko now.

    • Everyone always says “you’ve only got one wrist”. But does that mean you only own one pair of shoes? One pair of pants? One hat?

      • *Runs marathons in my RM Williams

        But fair.

    • You're on to something.

Last year I bought a Tudor Ranger on strap. Went to Kennedy Crown Perth and most of the consultants were young Chinese females. I crossed shop at Watches of Switzerland in Perth and the situation is the same. Back then I wondered why…

  • +2

Back when I was single and had a whole bunch of disposable income, I built my collection. JLC Ultra Thin Moon, Zenith El Primero, Breitling Navitimer, Omega Seamaster 300, a Nomos (if you count that).

Now that I'm married and have a mortgage, I'll probably never add to it, other than buying the occasional Casio if I feel like it.

    • +1

      subroc

Respect given for owning the Nomos.

  • I have too many watches to list, including some in that flawed pyramid's 'Impress the boss' level. On my wrist at the moment is a Steeldive SD1970. I have a real soft spot for vintage Seiko Lord Marvel and King Seiko watches (not the modern re-issues). The most comfortable watches I own are Omegas. More into vintage watches overall.

Next we will see a similar post about fountain pens.

    • Next we will see a similar post about fountain pens.

      Don’t. Stop.

  • So glad that I stopped at 1 Casio solar ecodrive then realised I don't wear watches. Camera gear on the other hand…

  • +1

Just a Tag Aquaracer. I like how it looks, but wear it less and less these days as a phone does the job most of the time, usually only wear it on holidays or places that have poor/no phone reception now.

I doubt I will ever buy another watch and even though I can afford to I would never bother to go above the bottom 2 tiers of the pyramid.

  • +1

    Yes. two.

I have an Omega Seamaster 300m and a Grand Seiko Snowflake.

And a bunch of <$1k watches.

Reason I bought the Omega is that it's a gorgeous watch and a great daily driver. Covers all the bases. Can be worth with a suit on the bracelet or with jeans on a silicone/other strap.

The Grand Seiko, well, everyone should have something beautifully crafted like it ;)

I know this is OzBargain, but I'm sure we have a few watch peeps in here.

I think it's a bit of a false assumption to make that because people are interested in deals and saving money, that they don't have any. Whenever there is a salary poll the average salary of an OZB is well above the Aussie median wage. There's a lot of well of people on here, so it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that there are people who are wearing Rolexes/Omegas etc.

    • +1

Agreed. How else would we afford Rolexes if we don't scrimp every cent.
