  • can this control multiple AC units or it's a 1-to-1 controller.

    • +3

It's an IR blaster so I guess if you have two identical AC units within line of sight it would work but otherwise it's just 1 to 1.

  • +8

You can buy tuya ones off aliexpress for less than $15, i have one and it works perfectly. Is paired with my Aircon and TV

    • +1

Hey we both wrote the same thing almost simultaneously. I guess great minds think alike! :)

    • They don't work with homekit (from what I can see), whereas the Sensibos do.

    • Do you mind sharing more details on this… Can I turn on the air con at say 9pm.and turn off at 09:30… And turn on again in the kor at 7 am and turn off at 8 etc…

      • Yes, can do exactly that plus set up scenes (e.g turn on at 6am if temperature is below x)

    • This one?
Tuya RF+IR Universal Remote Control Smart Home Controller for TV AC Curtain Roller Shutter Work with Siri Alexa Google Home

    • Which model, got an example link?

    • Which one? I've got a Tuya-based S6 Pro which is crap compared to my Sensibo Sky units.

I'd love to get some cheap, reliable alternatives though.

I don't really get the cost. For around $15 when on sale, you can get a Tapo smart wifi socket which pretty much does the same thing with the exception of monitoring temperature and humidity which seems to have limited utility especially if your air conditioning already comes with similar features built in.

    • +7

I think the OP's item act like a AC remote? Where the Tapo Wi-Fi plug is just turning AC's main power on and off?

    • +1

You can get Tuya wifi thermometers that have IR blasters too for around that price.

    • +2

Does anyone have an AC that's plugged into a socket? I'd expect most are hardwired with a big weatherproof mechanical switch on the outside wall. No one is going to be using a smart plug with that.

      • Yes, I have one set up with an old box style RC AC. That's with an Broadlink device, not a wifi smart plug.

      • I thought the same. They have pics of split systems using this but splits are hard-wired so how would this work?

  • +1

As good as sensibo is and even though these are “HomeKit” compatible they don’t work offline… they need to phone home to work… rather disappointing. If you’re happy with not being able to use these without internet then they’re great, just don’t want people thinking because they’re HomeKit they’ll work offline.

    • +1

Doesn't the fact that it's HomeKit compatible mean you can operate them remotely if you have an Apple TV or HomePod?

      • You can but where most things HomeKit work without an internet connection these don’t. So if internet is out or their servers are offline (they were the other day briefly) you can’t control your AC

        • Oh I see. That's really not a good way to implement HomeKit support…

    • +1

Not only that. The climate react and other features require subscription.

I have both the $15 Tuya option and the Sensibo. I still prefer the Sensibo UI and how it works kinda OK with Alexa but if I would have not bought it first, thinking the advanced features come with the price tag, I would have stuck with the $15 Tuya one which works OK for basic AC features.

      • How much for the Sensibo subscription?

And what features is lacking from the Tuya solution?

        • 2.50 USD a month. I am not paying it.

The free verSion is better than Tuya in supporting advanced features of ACs. Tilting leftvandvright, extra fan modes etc. Tuya will be well compatible with the classic hot/cold, set temp, set fan speeds.
Sensibo free only has geofencing and filter clean reminder on top of that.rest of the features like Climate reaction(turns on when temp drops or gets over within specific time) are paid.

      • +1

If you can write a bit of code their API gives you access to control climate react. I set up a simple job to enable and disable it on a schedule for my use case.

  • +2

I much prefer the DIY controllers that use a $10 ESP8266, that you can control with ESPHome, Home Assistant, and HomeKit.

It depends on your model if this is an option:

  • I have one - acts like a universal remote basically for your AC. You can override settings like temperature, timer and schedule setting, gives your reports of graphs for usage, etc. It was very handy in the summer when I could just set it to auto and regulates the room temperature - saved me some money on my bills in the end.

  • Can you easly add a proximity sensor?

    • Yep they have a room sensor available

  • Wish I can something like this for my central heating. Getting up in the morning to just turn it on is sht

    • Yeah, the Tuya ones will do. They have scene schedules. I use the Sensibo for the same thing. Turns on AC 30mins before alarm.

      • Do you have a link?

        • +1

I think this is what I have.

          • @goodwillN1: Ah that's the S6 type I already have.

Tried to set up my AC and some other things yesterday and there is loads missing from what you get with Sensibo - I'm talking basic functions. On my AC at least, it has this strange setup where you have to pick functions for every temperature like "Cool 16C", "Cool 17C", instead of letting you just set the temperature and mode to what you want. I could never understand it or get it to work properly.

The UX and setup procedure is terrible compared to Sensibo. But then Sensibo costs a lot more.

            • @gadgetguy: Yeah, I used it with 4 different AC brands so far and tge catalogue of covered functions definitely varied a lot. Never as bad as you describe though. So I guess you might gave some less popular AC. Or some with some cryptic IR controls that were not cracked yet.

              • @goodwillN1: I have LG and Hisense A/Cs.

It took 5 seconds for Sensibo to capture a single remote press for each one and that was it, all functions available - even control of turning off the LED displays on both models. My LG actually has WiFi and can be controlled by its own app (LG Thinq) but strangely that doesn't have the ability to turn off the LED so it is more limited than the Sensibo.

I actually have 5 of the cheaper Sensibo Sky models which are rock solid. But these still cost me over $100 each. I don't need the extra frills of the Air or the Sensibo subscriptions.

They worked the same with the Hitachi models in my previous apartment.

                • @gadgetguy: Yep. I also have bot devices and Sensibo is more bullet proof in compatibility but the Tuya cheapo has not been a general disaster for me. 4 different AC brands where 3 had AC functions working fine. Temp and humidity also comparable with Sensibo.

  • It says $169 for me ?

  • +2

I bought two of these with the sensor and they are rubbish. For starters, the sensor temperatures are way off. Then they bind your email to the device itself and if you change email or sell them it’s a real hassle. Support is tokenistic if you have problems too. The app also nags you to pay more on top and upgrade to a “premium” version.

  • Has anybody tried these - tuya or sensibo to work with Gas Heaters/Coolers like Bonaire products for example MB5 Series Gas Heater. It has an remote control which I can use to control (on/off, inc/decrease temp etc) from any room.
