2023 GWM Tank 300 Lux Hybrid and Ultra Hybrid Starting from $52990 Drive Away (Save $3000) @ GWM Dealers

1481

Australia's new favourite Chinese bush basher is now $3000 cheaper for the 2023 models. These are really quite popular and offer good value. I like the look and the total package but we're spoilled for choice at the moment with cheap good value Chinese ICE and EVs flooding the market. Still holding out for what launches in the next few months but this one's worth a look of you're after an off-road capable SUV or even just a family SUV.

According to Car expert there's some dealer in Melbourne offering some extra bonuses but I haven't verified this hence not promoting the extra offer. Do your own research before buying. Mods banned me last time and took down my hugely popular Mercedes EQE post after the price couldn't be verified.

If I could offer a counter point.

My misses bought a H6 haval last year, the two minor issues we've had (entertainment system upgrade and tire pressure management sensor) were both fixed promptly and without issue by dealership. We've both been extremely happy with the vehicle. So happy in fact that I've gone out and purchased a second H6 for a work vehicle to replace an aging BWM X5.

My accountant advised me to buy one prior to the 30th, I rang the dealership on the Friday and they had me in the new car by the Tuesday (5 days from first phone call)

There is a lot of haval bashing that goes on here but I find it's vary rarely coming from people that actually own them.

Keep in mind also that I have a wide variety of vehicles owned both personally and through my company so I'm not ignorant to the differences in brands/reliability etc. they're just actually a decent car for a cheap price.

Of course you're mileage may vary but this has been my experience so far.

      • Yes I would agree, solid buy for the money.

      • haval bashing

Most haval bashing comments are from, my friend, my long lost bro, my neighbours experiences.

        • +1

And they all come from same source: trust me bro.

    • I mean this is kind of all things Chinese that we import.

Just look at the dramas going on with Zyron chargers.

I bought a risky Chinese electric drivetrain for a bike build and almost immediately came across the stupid "wrong indexation" glitch with it.

Support is finding other stupid white guys that have made YouTube videos about it lol

    • there is always a "heard from a friend" comment

      Tank 500. Not this

      • +1

        tank 700 ftw

  • +12

Last year, I hired a Tank300 with a few mates (petrol version) for the trip from Chengdu to Laksha via state route 318.
    My personal experience is positive.

      • +23

I feel sorry for your ignorance.

      • +1

Mate, I own/have owned plenty of vehicles. Including by not limited to prados, cruisers, hiluxes, BMW SUVs etc etc. I also currently own a couple of haval (great wall motors) h6s and they're a decent car for the money.

I don't own a tank and I've only ever driven one on a single occasion but I wouldn't sleep on Chinese cars any more. They're making very serious improvements year on year, and offering their products at extremely competitive prices. They very likely are not as reliable yet at some of the Nissan it Toyota options, but they're getting close and they're priced tens of thousands of dollars cheaper for comparable models in most cases.

    • What's the process to get a permit for driving in China? AFAIK they don't accept IDP..

      • Good, the IDP is a sad joke.

      • +2

You need a resident permit first, and then pass their driver's license computer test, very similar to our hazards perception test. It's purely about traffic rules, and it does have English as an option.
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmdp75mNyxE&t=137s

The most straightforward approach is to hire a local travel agent who can provide both transportation and visa assistance. This agent will handle all visa-related matters and serve as your driver. Please note that this option will incur a significantly higher cost.

I did drive past a few European motorbike groups on National Highway 318. no idea how they get a driver's license in China.

        • +1

Your guide arranges it. I transited China for 6 days with a small group of 5 motorbikes and the guide took care of licenses, insurance, permits and hotels. Still got my chinese licence and temporary license plate as souvenirs.

      • +1

        That is a rip-off option.
A much worse option than HECS and home loan.

  • Great Deal, very attractive car! Still wanted to wait NIO coming to Australia.

  • This or series 70 Landcruiser?
    Tough decision.

      • +2

Have you seen the prices of wranglers now??

        • -6

They had a price drop this year. Cheaper than a 70 series.

          • +14

@Mondorock: You don't get to diss any other car while you're promoting a Wrangler 🤣

        • Renamed to price stranglers

      • +2

Are you mad, who would pick a Wrangler over a 70 series if the 70 series is the type of 4wd you are after?

      • +1

        Lol, Just Expect Every Problem.

    • I would go for ICE version of Tank 300.

    • tank 500 is the competition for the landcruiser, this is a direct jeep competitor
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpF1mXP0YFo

    • Tank 500?

  • Tank? No thanks.

I'll wait for the Landcruiser FJ (AKA Landcruiser mini) later this year.

  • Waiting for Tank500

    • +3

I'm just wondering why you're waiting. It's already available to buy. You can even test drive it for 48 hrs

  • +3

Sign me up for a tank 700 any day of the week.

The 300 though has a beautiful interior. Just a pity the price isnt sharper ($40ks honestly for a chinese built car would be understandable)

Would buy one in around 3 years time when the majority of the depreciation has occured.

    • Tank 800 is better looking than any other tanks

      • +1

i disagree, the M1A1 is still a work of art

    • +2

tank 700 is the top dog, i wonder how much it would cost in australia, its like a Gwagon/ rezvani had a baby but more luxurious

  • +4

I believe moving forward…….within the next 10 years……chinese made cars will dominate the car dealerships in Aus…as China takes over gradually.

    • This. I don't see how the old world manufacturers will be able to compete with super cheap (and good now they have had decades of forcing western car companies to partner with Chinese firms) Chinese manufacturing. Japanese, American and German car companies have dug their own grave. I just don't see the average Aussie paying $100k for something that they can get for $40k with a different badge. Especially once the Chinese manufacturers start setting up local service/dealerships. I am concerned that these super cheap models will essentially become disposable items once they are a few years outside warranty periods.

      • +1

It's only a matter of time when we visit an aussie dealership and jap cars, euro cars will be offered as secondary choices. Tesla has already been taken over by Chinese EV……no matter what people say.

      • Not so much because the Chinese are so much cheaper, but because everyone else did a price jack way over the price of inflation and then more.

This is why quite a few companies can suddenly drop their prices by $20-30k.

        • Exactly. I get used to a 30k Toyota before 2019 but if you suddenly on the market for a new car you will find that Toyota is luxury band now.

Look at price of Toyota and euro car prices now in China you will understand the competition from Chinese cars will eventually benefit the end customers.

BTW, Toyota car used to same or more expensive in China but now about half or 2 third of price of Aussie market.

    • +3

A couple of years ago, I was dead against Chinese cars and would never buy one. Now, I think why not.

If they can produce decent quality cars for a cheaper price, then that's great. I think I will wait to see what the BYD Shark brings pricewise, but it's almost certain my next new car will be from the Chinese market

      • +3

Exactly, if the price is right…why not? and the quality is same or similar…….why would you even spend more.

        • -1

          The quality isn't the same.

But I agree, competition can only be a good thing.

I'm weary these cars are dumped here cheap and then the badge get replaced once the rep is ruined. Rinse repeat.

This isn't a new tactic in Australia.

I certainly wouldn't go remote with one of these.

        • The quality isn't the same. I have tested couple different brands and EV cars in China, they are made with much higher quality comparing with my X5 and VW in Australia.

    • Sad but i think it's true… If you see whats coming out of China… They were so smart to lure big auto into china and steal their secrets while big auto were happy to give it away for quick profits.

      • Chinese ICE cars were barely worth the materials they were built in for decades. Clearly wasn't working, whatever they were doing. Honestly the story around EVs is murky too, and a lot more to do with heavy government subsidisation of the industry and R&D than industrial esponiage.

What requires reflection is that almost every developed country has outsourced industrial capacities to China over the decades, and now the tides of scale that have developed there are seemingly impossible to overcome for manufacturing sectors in developed nations with high wages. Of course as consumers, we've benefited from standards of living increases due to cheap goods. But now that we're seemingly at a geopolitical crossroads, that trade off suddenly is getting more scrutiny.

The reality is that motor vehicles are probably an area that will see intense price competition as China finally becomes competitive. Assuming current trajectory, it wouldn't surprise me if in a decade Chinese cars become as ingrained in the industry as they are in consumer electronics for example.

        • No doubt you are right… Too late to turn the moving ship…

  • Every part of the website with links to Range fails to show it. Anyone know about the range of these?

    • -1

      It is not an EV.

      • +1

I know, it's a hybrid. I guess they only put a range for full EV.

Thanks for clarifying. However, BYD has range for the Shark, giving battery only and total range. Would be helpful for a 4WD

  • +2

Buyers should create two lists of things they want from their next car before making a purchase: needs and wants.

As a buyer, reliability is a "need" for these 4x4s. Japanese brands and even Mahindra have proven reliable models. However, the Tank was released less than four years ago, so it's too early to comment on its reliability.

  • 53k. this or;
    Cupra Born demo, or
    VW T-Rok demo, or
    two Suzuki Swift Hybrids.
year old used Tesla Model 3,
    two used Mazda 3s,
I'm too indecisive, I just dont want to spend the dosh

    • +1

Every car from VW owned companies that I’ve had has been nothing but problem. Includes a Skoda and two VWs. So I’d rule out the VW and Cupra if you plan on keeping longer than warranty period

      • +1

        Early years VW were great

Since 2010s VW quality has been getting worse
My partner 2017 golf starts getting issue in less than 3 years, my friend’s Polo got engine issues just over 5 years (just out of warranty)

      • +1

I have owned a Octavia RS wagon since 2016 and it's been faultless… only had to change discs/pads/tires but those are consumables anyway. When I got it, they 'gave me' 5 years free servicing and that's what I used.

I'm now shopping for a new car but Skoda is not in the shortlist simply because the Kodiaq is too expensive for what it offers which wasn't the case when I got the wagon.

    • +3

VAG cars are expensive to service and maintain. Enquire about servicing costs before buying. I traded in my A1 because $800 for a service is ludicrous.

    • If you are lucky, 53k Hot wheel..
      Joke..

  • Have they fixed the heavy braking "endo" feature yet?

    🤣

  • +1

For those that not aware, GWM is unlike some new EV brands in china, they have been making SUV in china over 20 years and best SUV seller for years, so quality wise shouldn’t be an issue

Just to say that they are also Russia supporter in the Russia-Ukraine war, if this matters to some

  • +1

TBF, I'd tap that for that price, if the boot wasn't a swing arm.

  • +2

These look suspiciously similar to the new Ford Bronco's 😂

  • +3

I saw a Tank 500 (their competitor to the Land Cruiser) on display in a mall the other week. Despite being a new display model I saw rust on the suspension arms… They look like good value on paper but long term I'm still dubious about them.

    • +1

there are many complaints about chinese cars, even in china. People taking their cars to the dealership and breaking it, cos the company cannot fix it.
And, also broken axle on new cars. https://www.carscoops.com/2024/05/chery-omoda-5-rear-axle-sn….

But no car is perfect. You should just go with the ones that have fewer breakdowns and more reliability. Only time can determine if these Chinese cars are better and more reliable.

    • +1

Toyota have 50 years of proven reliability… China still has 0… Euro is also 0.

  • +1

The website aargh - trying to actually find specs on the car is a nightmare. How big is the fuel tank, how big is the hybrid battery.
It doesn't even say if its a plug in hybrid.

Terrible. If the site is anything to go by they would be terrible to deal with.

    • yeah. but a simple Google search gives u the answer, though.
75L and 1.75kWh battery. don think they are offering PHEV for any vehicles. It's either EV or Hybrid.

    • +1

Total payload on these is around 400kg. So a few people with their stuff and a tank of fuel is more than enough to put you over the limit.

  • +2

Two pages of comments and not a single mention of Mahindras? Going off road on a budget they should be part of the discussion. The Pikup looks to be a contender for a bush basher. $40k drive away

    • +2

Go ahead and please report back.
