2023 GWM Tank 300 Lux Hybrid and Ultra Hybrid Starting from $52990 Drive Away (Save $3000) @ GWM Dealers

1481

Australia's new favourite Chinese bush basher is now $3000 cheaper for the 2023 models. These are really quite popular and offer good value. I like the look and the total package but we're spoilled for choice at the moment with cheap good value Chinese ICE and EVs flooding the market. Still holding out for what launches in the next few months but this one's worth a look of you're after an off-road capable SUV or even just a family SUV.

According to Car expert there's some dealer in Melbourne offering some extra bonuses but I haven't verified this hence not promoting the extra offer. Do your own research before buying. Mods banned me last time and took down my hugely popular Mercedes EQE post after the price couldn't be verified.

Damn it, I am only $52,900 short.

    • +2

You doing well I am $52,990 plus Uber ride short to pick it up

  • +7

rather pay $3000 extra for 2024 model

    • +3

What are the main differences that make it worth the extra $3,000?

      • It's one year less old?
Just look for any car on car sale and compare 2022 and 2023 for example with the same kilometres

  • +8

Waiting for another tesla price drop

  • +1

how i wish they had phev version of the tank 300.

    • ditto. love the look of the tank and my wife loves her Ora

      • +6

I had to do a double take. I thought you said oral

        • +15

He said wife. Orals no longer a thing.

          • @ozmian: How do they call it now…?

      • Does she think the Ora 3 is worth it over the earlier versions?

    • I hear there's a tank 400 phev coming this year.

  • +28

Hybrid with a worse real world fuel economy than a non-hybrid. Check the reviews.

    • +11

very true but the system is supposedly setup for more power rather than better fuel economy.

      • +17

It defeats the whole purpose of a hybrid.

Could had gone with bigger powerful engine for more power. Now it got 2 drivetrains and it's neither here nor there.

        • +10

No electic motors offer torque at low revs that a petrol engine cant.

          • -8

@Spendmore: That's what diesel is for. EVs use two motors to get the torque of one diesel engine.

However I am not sure about a GWM diesel engine being reliable

            • +3

@greatlamp: This way you get the torque of diesel with the benefit of petrol, cheaper, cleaner, more power etc. Unfortunately Australia doesn't get any decent petrol options like the rest of the world.

            • @greatlamp: Is that a 4, 6 or 8 cylinder engine you are talking about? 🤔

              • +1

@Quarn: It looks like a 4cyl turbo based on the model number. I doubt its reliability because GWM have no history of making diesel engines. Japanese diesels aren't anywhere near the German ones, why should we expect a Chinese company's very first model to be equivalent to its competitors? .

            • +3

@greatlamp: Electric motor provides Max torque from zero revs. No comparison.

            • @greatlamp: you really have little to no idea what you're talking about.

              • @sim36: GWM doesn't either, which is why they are producing a diesel variant. I'm sure you are an expert though.

        • It defeats the whole purpose of a hybrid.

          No it doesn't.

It's using a hybrid setup in a different way to what is normally done.

          • @spaceflight:

It's using a hybrid setup in a different way to what is normally done.

Exactly and it's so stupid. Adds 150kg weight to the already heavy 2155kg Kerb weight of Petrol version and $10,000 to the price. Considering it's an off-road SUV rather than sports car, most people would prefer better fuel economy over 1.5s faster 0-100 time. 162kw with 380nm torque is already plenty to off-road.

  • +7

I sat in one not too long ago and was seriously impressed by the performance and its offering.

  • everyone say dont get the hybrid its for performance boost and not worth it, not for fuel economy, you will see better from a flash tune, these things are nice looking and great off road idk about its long term quality performance tho

    • +2

Flash tune = loss of warranty.

    • Looks are subjective. I saw one from behind earlier this week and thought it looked comically awful.

  • +4

drove one when they 1st came out. nearly sold my cannon for it. sadly boot was too small and the payload is pretty average. im looking forward to test driving the new alpha this week with the bigger diesel and the same drive train as this. i find it strange the tank 500 owners are getting far better fuel economy than the 300s from what ive seen so far.

  • How is this better than a Pajero? Genuine question.

    • +1

I did not see any new models of Pajero and land cruiser on last year's Tibet trip.
Tank 300 is a kind of land cruiser killer in China.
But It has a terrible fuel efficiency.

      • +2

I am sure it is cheaper than a Pajero in China. Buy this deal is still more expensive than a Pajero Sport, which personally I think is more reliable.
Also, I thought Tank 500 is the land cruiser/Prado competitor.

        • +1

Agree Tank 500 is a better buy, even for the fuel efficiency.

          • @salin: Yep only if you use it as a shopping trolley. There is a good reason why you don't see many others apart from the big 'three' (toy, nis and mit/issues/ford) in the bush.

            • +2

@gtech: Is the good reason "Australians suffer from ridiculous brand loyalty syndrome"?

              • +14

@Dandaman21: Writing off loyalty to car brands that have proven themselves outback ready over decades/generations of ownership to simp some untested Chinese brand is disingenuous as heck. Especially when considering how important trusting and knowing your vehicle is out bush.

                  • +4

@Dandaman21: I guess the UN, African safari companies and Australian mining companies are simping too hey.

                    • @Spendmore: I guess everyone that doesn't agree with you is simping too hey.

                      • @Dandaman21: Just you, simp.

                        • -3

@Spendmore: Awww, there there sweaty, I'm sure your patrol/cruiser/navara/hilux/triton/ranger is much better and more reliable and manlier than your mates patrol/cruiser/navara/hilux/triton/ranger and your package is much bigger too no doubt. Hope that helps.

                          • -2

@Dandaman21: Your responses are screaming jealousy with a hefty dose of inferiority complex. Normal people dont need to compare xy or z vehicles as they are happy with what they have….the sooner you start realising this the less angry you will be and you will have a better life.

                            • -1

@Spendmore: Lol. Says the guy desperately seeking validation from the badge on his car. I'm not angry mate, because I'm able to make vehicle choices based on rational thought, not a crippling fear of what the boyz will think of me.

                              • @Dandaman21: No you are angry and you feel inferior as you ignored my last comment, it doesnt matter what people think. Once you realise this you will be happy and have no need to be jealous of strangers. By the way i have an Elantra.

                                • -2

@Spendmore: No you are angry and inferior as your mates 4WD has a bigger snorkel than yours. It doesn't matter that your snorkel is smaller than his. Once you realise this you will be happy and have no need to be jealous of strangers. By the way I have a big snorkel.

                                  • -1

@Dandaman21: Oh man descending into childish comebacks as you realise the hole you are in. It must suck trying to be smart on the internet without actually having any smarts. You will not get over your inferiority complex like that, if anything you are demonstrating inferiority as an adult.

                                    • @Spendmore: Just having a bit of fun mate, didn't mean to get you all worked up. Maybe you should go out for a relaxing drive?

                • @BuzzBuzzBuzz: But this car which nobody has even heard about until 5 minutes ago or seen how it performs after 10 years deserves your new loyalty!

                  • @Budju: So no one should buy them because they aren't reliable because no one has bought them and proven they're reliable. #boganlogic

                    • +2

                      @Dandaman21:

So no one should buy them because they aren't reliable because no one has bought them and proven they're reliable. #boganlogic

That's not he said. You said that people have "ridiculous brand loyalty syndrome", which seems to be deliberately inflammatory way to describe people who prefer to buy cars from brands with a track record of proven reliability.

You want to take a gamble on a cheap Chinese car? Be my guest. It might be amazing. Heck I might buy one in 10 years. Those unwilling to take that gamble with, in some cases, their lives aren't stupid though, and you're unwillingness to accept that screams ignorance.

            • @gtech: Five is the new three

        • A Prado isn't a proper land cruiser competitor, can't really throw those two cars in to compare to something else.

          • @CharlieAus: How so? What is missing in Prado plz?

            • @[Deactivated]: The size, the towing capacity, the torque, the larger/stronger running gear.

          • @CharlieAus: Landcruiser 300 is too big for a lot of the tracks, look how competent a fj cruiser is offroad and its just a shortened prado with a different body. Jeep are amongs the best offroad but they dont have the on road drive ability or reliability. Suzuki sierra have ability and reliability but again not great onroad.

            • @Spendmore: Yeah, that might be true, but it doesn't make them comparable vehicles heh. Like, I can't imagine many people would go shopping and have a list of large 4x4's then throw in a Prado and I can't imagine people would have a list of medium SUV's and throw in a random full size land cruiser to compare.

              • @CharlieAus: Its only 150mm shorter in the chassis but yeah i see what you mean. I suppose what i meant is the prado is very capable but benefits from a few mods like suspension, most of the mainstream vehicles are the same, it takes a few mods to get the best out of them.

      • I did not see any new models of Pajero and land cruiser on last year's Tibet trip.

Did you look for a Montero instead?

Because you know, Pajero is a vulgar/dirty word in half the world…
So it was Montero to the rescue for the knowitall Mitsubishi team…

        Same dog, different name.

        • Mitsubishi has faced significant challenges in maintaining its market presence in China over recent years. While the company has not completely exited the Chinese market, it has substantially scaled back its operations.

The Haval H6, produced by Great Wall Motors (GWM), has been a remarkable success in the Chinese SUV market. For over a decade, the Haval H6 has consistently ranked as one of the best-selling SUVs in China.

Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser, Prado were the most common non-Chinese SUVs on Tibet roads.

    • +2

      It exists?

    • It isnt.

    • +4

Great question, and one we strongly considered before buying. We chose the Pajero Sport because it had been tried and tested in the Australian market for 10 years. Picked up a sweet deal from an employee at the dealership who was about to be sacked. 10 year warranty and capped price servicing for peace of mind. I'll probably get laughed out of the room for saying this, but my hope is we sell it in 7-10 years and replace it with an EV with similar 4WD capabilities. Having tested it yesterday at Adelaide Hills 4WD Park I was blown away by what the Pajero Sport can do!

  • -1

Can I really save my fuel cost if purchase this?

    • +6

Buying a new car just for fuel savings is never a smart decision. Unless you're completely swappi g to an ev with solar, you'll never break even

      • Well just announced the Suzuki Swift hybrid fo 27k, well in manual

        • +4

          ‘Mild’ hybrid.

Manufacturers have realised they can get away with murder by adding a 48V circuit and pretend it’s a hybrid.

    • just read a review, it is only marginally less in fuel costs for an extra $10k. The advantage is the power

  • Thanks OP, got two.

    • +22

Yeah! I'm tired of seeing every car coming from the CCP with 4 wheels, seats and a steering wheel. They need an imagination of their own

    • +6

You never see a 2024 jimny right? they literally looks like from the WW2, soviet union or US army Generals must love suzuki a lot xd

        • +1

The Jimny is the only car on the market that's more than you've paid for it the moment you drive out the door. They're so damn popular they've had to put a stop to sales until then can finish all the back orders.

          • @slipstreamexpress: I know exactly what they are. They're tiny kei cars with dodgy safety rating and 4 speed automatic. Maybe good for Japanese cities.

        • You are wilding my dude

The Jimny is rad, and incredibly popular. It would be my number 1 choice, if only it had better economy

      • +1

        If I wasn't so tall I would've bought a Jimny ages ago.

A tiny efficient engine, no stupid bells and whistles to break after 12 months.
Still capable of 4wd and cheap.

They absolutely nailed it, the Jimny achieved the dream that Jeep owners are sold but never delivered.

        • You have to consider the price, Jimny is now $40k plus, it's a good offroader though. Years ago Jimny was at reasonable price

    • I think people who are looking to buy this should be looking at performance and value for money. If you buy a 4WD for looks and street cred, then you are part of a bigger problem!

  • +16

GWM Haval customer service is extremely poor in Australia, my friend bought one last year and regretting it. Highly recommend to stay away from them

    • +9

The main aim of Chinese cars is flooding the market with cheap options. No guarantees 😂

    • Is this the general view or just a bad case? What happened?
