  • Is there any other benefits to hardwiring these other than recording while car is off and freeing up a port in the car?

    • +1

Also makes it easier to hide all the cables.

      • True, anyone know how much it would cost to get someone to do it? Id be afraid to break something unless there is a good tutorial

        • $130 from my guy front and back camera

          • +1

            @fozzie: He's got a guy

          • @fozzie: are you in Mlebourne? I need to get mine installed.

            • +1

@aliam: sorry Sydney. If you go on market place it there are ads and you can talk to them/negotiate etc

            • +1

@aliam: @aliam I went through Airtasker, I think I paid $150 all up. The benefit is you get to see quotes and reviews before committing. Really happy with the result.

              • @jyueli: Sounds quite nifty. But how do you determine if that airtasker person is good or not. Don't just saying ratings….

                • +1

@neonlight: You can read through all their past reviews left by others and that should paint a pretty clear picture of the Airtasker. I've used it 3 times (installing dashcam, repairing something and pest control) and had solid experiences overall. There's also a messaging system you can use before committing so a good back-and-forth is another consideration for me.

            • @aliam: I saw the A119 I think on “best dash cams of 2024” - a rather boring guy from England but knew his stuff about dash cams. He said the biggest deal with no wiring harness was that if you have Wireless CarPlay or Android Auto then there is some conflict and you have to turn them on in a certain order.

Usually Auto Electricians install this sort of gear, or whoever the car place uses for installing new audio or in car entertainment systems, or if you know someone who is good taking trim off to run the wires.

There were good images of both night and day and I’d be inclined to go for an A229 with the rear camera and HW kit as well as the polarising lens cover.

Since I had an accident last week and the other driver drove off, I’m really wishing I had bought it when I first saw it. Hindsight is 20-20. I’m in Bendigo, and there are several installers here from basic to “I have unlimited funds to put a new OTT entertainment system, as many 2 or 3 way speakers, amplifiers and a massive dual 12” sub woofer box”

I don’t get how some people don’t realise that the alternator can’t keep the battery charged if you go insane overboard., though buying a new alternator won’t cost you the earth, but also upgrading the battery as well - sorry got off the track - just remembering the auto shows I’ve been to in the past where inside probably cost more than the entire car.

Back to hardwire the front and/or rear cameras, since most of it is labour then it helps to know people as Dashcam wiring, especially for a rear camera on an older car can be a bit of a pain.

However whether I personally get the A119 2 chan or the A229 2 chan, there was strong recommendation for the polarised front lens cover.

Watch out for the MicroSD cards, apparently ViaFo can be quite picky with high or max endurance microSD cards iirc.

        • For any hardwiring, I would consider a voltage cut off kit. Some cameras do not have the feature and it will drain your battery if hard-wired.

I did mine. Used a multimeter and a few good YouTube videos.

Then again, I'm a cheap bastard with a $68 cam

My ciggy plug is on even when the car is off. So hard wiring saves me unplugging it every time while still allowing me to charge phone when I am away from the car for a bit (like camping).

    waiting on duo one :(

    • Me too. They posted a duo for $394 but it's too pricey for me right now. I'm hoping for a A129 Duo for when they clear them out

viofo australia is sending emails in regards to their EOFY sale 30% off, might hold on for that in couple days.

        • heya!

        • I purchased the A229 Pro 3 hours before you posted this message. Emailed them asking if they'd give me the discount and sure enough they refunded me the difference! Definitely recommend their support team and thank you kindly for posting this in the first place! 👍

        • I tried the code with the 229 pro but got 'Sorry, this coupon is not applicable to selected products. '

          • +1

@Planky: I just looked at the page and the price is showing $370.99 which is 30% off. Perhaps that's why? Not 35% but still a good discount.

  • I got one of these recently and it performs well - don't expect miracles at night though. Transfers clips to my phone wirelessly over 10MB/s.

    • Did you get the Mini 2 version with Starvis 2? I am happy with the performance of the 229 model compared to how crappy all the other dash cams are. Of course can't compare with taking a photo on your phone at night.

      • Yeah I did. Can't read rego's at night with the footage. Daytime is okay if close enough. I think my settings are 1440p at 30fps.

    • Are you running off 2.4gz or 5ghz wifi ?
2.4ghz transfer speed is unbearably slow. 5ghz is more than bearable imo :)

      • yeah, off the 5gHz. I think there's 5.8gHz which is the same from memory. I got a insta360 x4 and that does like 30MB/s somehow.

  • Is it being sold in China? What’s its Chinese name (I mean the brand)?

    • +2

yes it is. Search “威孚星光二代” and you can use google translate to get some info. “威孚恒创” is the brand.

  • Any deal on 3 side dashcam ?

  • The only complaint of this cam is it could get overheat and restart itself during summer. though it usually happens only when (or after) the car is parked under the sun. This literally makes parking mode unusable in summer.

    • in Sydney

    • If Viofo products are overheating in the sun, then id say they all would. (Oz Bargains choice)

These have capacitors in them to avoid the smoke coming out of the battery.

I've got 2 x A129 dual channels ($250) (self installed) and they haven't skipped a beat, it will drain your battery though so that hardwire kit is mandatory to cut it off if you want parking mode activated.

  • Anyone thought about buying two of these? Then you don't have to run a long cable through the car, assuming your car has a USB port in the rear section.

    • Yes, the difficulty is a you said, power supply.
Plus extra cost, just get the A129 Duo 2 channel and install it yourself, not hard, i did one last weekend and it was fiddly sure, but its now working a treat

  • Anyone with advice or feedback on enabling always-on via fuse vs OBD port?
