Great deal if you're after a dash cam with the Sony Starvis 2 Sensor (IMX662). Possibly the cheapest one made with this sensor.

It is 1080p but I personally think it should suffice in 95% of cases, especially given the sensor quality.

If you are after a higher res camera (under $100) but don't mind a slighter lower quality sensor, then I have posted a deal here for a Kawa camera.

Both go well with my other Samsung SD card deal. Although an endurance range SD card is usually longer lasting for dash cams. I've been using a normal Samsung Evo Plus and that's been OK for about 4 years and just getting a low speed warning now from the dashcam.

This is superior to the 70mai Dashcam 1S that's usually popular on OzB and is similarly priced.

Note: You need to activate the $6 coupon in the item link to bring the price down to what's quoted in this deal.

  • can this record when the engine is off?

    • +1

If you get the hardwire kit as well I believe

    • +1

You need the hardwire kit though for that to work. Basically instead of using 12v cig lighter for power you run the cable to your battery and power it up that way. Only way you can record when the engine is off. Also doing that will compress the video, as in it will compress 30mins into 1min of footage.

      • +1

Can you hook it up to a powerbank?

        • Think they make power banks for this specific purpose but I haven't looked into it.

        • No idea. I did have some issues trying to connect to my phone to try and access the onboard storage as I'm guessing tos looking for a specific amount of power. But I'll have to try a power bank and see what happens.

    • Unsure if it can do partial surveillance on battery, I know my other 70mai (different model) does it for about 30-60mins until the inbuilt battery runs out.

The hardwire kit is in the same link above (about $16 more)

    • Yes, it has parking mode if installed with their hardwire kit - however, the standard hardwire kit voltage cutoff is too low for my comfort (I believe it is 11.8V now).

      • The Viofo hardwire kit can be set at higher cut off levels. Perhaps it would be compatible.

        • I know some brands are particular with the hardwire kit you use, so I just avoid issues by recommending my customers to get a hardwire kit from the same brand when possible. Also, this 70mai unit uses micro USB, Viofo only has mini USB and usb-c cables

  • Mine die within a year, I think may because their firmware update mess up.

    • +3

Have you tried claiming warranty? I've had my 70mai for over 4 years, never had issues.

      • +4

2018 Indiegogo crowdfunder here, still working like new. Just boght an A500S with rear to replace it though, and going to move the original into my work car.

      • Years ago bought from eBay, no reply from the seller.

  • +1

rear camera kit for wifes current cam is $45, might as well get this

I cant think of any negatives using a front camera on the rear as long as we can get the angle right?

    • +1

Need a separate memory card, separate power source, and 'front units' are typically bulkier than just a rear cam.

None of this matters to me haha, I'll be installing this exact camera as a rear camera. You could say separate memory card offers a bit more redundancy since getting two to fail at the same time is less likely. Same with the power source. All positives in my opinion!

      • Basically this. But, also consider where your car power source is 12V plug, fuse box etc. E.g if using the 12V plug, does your car have one near the rear? Otherwise, you'll have to wire it to the front.

        • +1

Rear wiper 12v is good for power

          • @nocure: What do you mean? Plus, not all cars have a rear wiper.

            • @idd: True, mines a wagon, i just tapped into the positive and ground to the body for hardwire. For sedans there are plenty of "ignition on" hot wires around that area.

              • @nocure: You tapped into the rear wire via the fusebox in the front or did you splice with the rear wire cable at the back?

  • +2

Looks excellent except for the 1080P 30FPS limitation. The Starvis is an excellent sensor as seen on the A119 Mini 2, but with mediocre post processing and this 1080P 30fps limitation, it's still not enough for me to bite the bullet here…

    • better then nothing though

    • +1

Do you use it for filming racing or something?

I think for most people's use case of just filming various idiots/insurance reasons 30fps is more than enough… Usually lower fps means better low light performance too.

      • Sometimes you've just gotta have the best

      • +1

If the video quality will not be sufficient to see the rego I wish you luck in finding him on the run.

        • How does a higher FPS help with this?

          • @Binchicken22: When you have high speed you need to capture the short moment when the rego is close enough to see, but before too close when get git. That maybe a couple of meters distance that will be even shorter due to bright light or something else. Now count how much time you need at speed 60 km/h to drive those 2 meters, and how speedy the camera should be to have the key frame made timely.

  • +1

Amazing they still selling this model, my frd's car using one for few years already and still going.

    • +1

I think this is a fairly new model, you might be thinking of the 70mai 1s

  • +2

Whats the go with capacitor versions, I heard the Aussie heat destroys the batteries.

    • keen to know this too

    • +1

Not to worry, it use battery specific used in high temperature. It max at 70 degree if I remember it right. The battery manufacturer actually has much better battery, both higher temperature and charge cycle, too bad 70mai don't have that option. I research it when I bought the replacement battery, the original one only have 100 or 200 charging cycle, usually die in 2 years for daily use.

      • +2

Having the windows down 5cm causes only a slight decrease in temperature with an outside temperature of around 30 degrees. A closed car can reach a temperature of 78°C while temperatures will still reach 70°C with a window gap of 5cm.

75% of the temperature increase occurs within 5 minutes of closing the car and leaving it.
90% of the temperature increase occurs within 15 minutes.

In Australian summer it’s not unusual to have multiple days in a week of around 35 so I would say that a max temp of 70 degrees is still no good for that battery.

        • 70 degree is working temperature not storing temperature, so only if using parking mode yes your info is related, but I never use it so it's irrevelant to me. And I don't see many peoples using parking mode.

    • +2

      This one has a battery.

My battery died after a year and needs to be plugged in to work. The battery lasts about 5 seconds before it shuts down.

  • +1

Mine turns off after 30mins driving. I suspect the hot sun has cooked something in it. Probably wouldn't buy another even though it is a good price for good quality camera

    • Which model though, I bought 5x 2k model, never have heat issue in Sydney's summer.

      • I have 70mai dash prob gen1 with battery and it died after a year maybe less

the unit would reset every 5 seconds in 35c +

the time and date also needs to be reset

        • that is my first 70mai and still using it after replaced battery. But your one definetly heat related.

    • +1

Best to get a capacitor based dashcam and avoid ones that use batteries. They’re no good in our climate.

Found the M300 for similar price of $57.54: https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005002702009187.html?spm=a2g…

Also Found the A200 with display for $66.70: https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005006212936185.html?pdp_npi…

About $20 extra for rear cam

Which one of these is the best deal?

    • +2

      M300 doesn't have STARVIS 2 sensor (and HDR) but it's 2k resolution

Battery capacity is lower too (300 vs 240)

      • +1

That's right, bit of a hard one. But I think M200 would be better for low light situations especially.

  • +2

but I personally think it should suffice in 95% of cases,

Solicitor: I would like to present this footage as evidence in 1080p resolution.
Defence: Objection your honour. 1080p in 2024??!!!
Magistrate: Sustained. I will not allow this mockery in my court, maybe in 2000 but not in 2024.

    • +3

😂 What I meant was that in most cases having non-blurry video evidence should be enough for insurance claims. Unless on the off-chance you had to have clear number plate readings from a distance.

  • Coming up as Total : AU$59.81 for me !!

  • Is that camera good? Seems like a reputational brand in Chinese market according to my colleague.

    • +1

      Good compared to what?

      • I use Mi Dash Cam 2

    • Yes, it is good

  • +2
    • great find, mate.

same one sold $150+ at Amazon.

      • Is that better than the 70mai Smart Dash Cam 3 M200?

  • Spec suggests it supports SD cards only upto 128 gigabytes is that right?
What happens if you put 256gb into it?

    • -1

      It/you gets car-strated…

  • So what does a $500+ dash cam do that a $56.15 one doesnt

    • +1

      Better video quality.

This one is 1080 at 30fps.

Spending more will give you much better resolution and more frames, better night vision, more visual data to work from in the case of an event or accident.

If you want as much data as possible in the footage (better chance of seeing facial details, vehicle details, licence plate numbers, etc), spending more money will give you this.

      • +1

In addition to the above, better app UI & connectivity, motion & impact parking mode, more options in settings (such as adjusting brightness, motion parking mode: select detection zone), voltage cut off options for parking mode, cloud functionalityfor remote access (albiet, it can be expensive to upkeep), low energy parking mode using radar etc

  • -2

    hmmm

    • What are your thoughts?

  • go and check australia dashcam videos in youtube.
you can get a good idea about which camera to buy and which camera to avoid

    • Yea I did that in the past and spent 600 on a Blackvue 750s front/rear that shit itself.. infact looking at recordings had not worked in a year… good investment.

      • +1

Likewise, I ended up with a street guardian around 500. Went out of focus after a while and doesn't always turn on. Lasted no longer than the cheap ones I'd been using previously.

  • can language be changed to English for this one?

    • thats something I had not thought about…

      • Just opened mine yesterday, and came in English out of the box suprisingly. Connecting it to the app allows you to change to a bunch of different languages

  • Waiting for viofo range with starvis2…

    • The A119 Mini 2 posted today is their cheapest starvis 2 offering, about $90 more than this deal.

  • +2

An average quality dashcam is better than having none so it's worth a buy especially if it will prove any accident claim that's made against you

  • How's the M500 for $115.80 incl tax. HDR recording and inbuilt storage

  • Do you have any good recommendations for front and rear cams? Or is there rear cam option for this one?

  • How does this compare to dahua cam thats on sale at Costco? https://www.costco.com.au/Tyres-Automotive/Automotive-Access…
