  • How would this compare to say the TCL C855?

    • +2

Better for sure, more codec support, better algorithms for picture enhancement and more importantly for backlight control. Sony FALD has better implementation of the tech than TCL with their miniLED. Thats not to say TCL is bad but just out of the 2 I know which I would buy.

Price though doesn't seem amazing. 65" non oled shouldnt cost more than $2k. Pretty sure its been cheaper, and the "box damaged" ones get even cheaper but are just as good

      • Thanks mate. I'm contemplating between the 75" version of this, TCL 855 or shelling out a couple more hundred bucks for the Samsung S90C. I've read people had blooming issues with the X90L though, hopefully it's not that bad.

If blooming is an issue for you go OLED. If you use it only at night then OLED is an amazing choice. If during the day as well it might be worth going x90L (or the mini LED next model up x95) as you are going for a balanced living room tv.

I went x95k as also use it through the day and it has been good BUT still has some aggressive blooming around really bright highlights like fire torches etc in HDR. General black levels are great.

Big thing to consider is if you use tv with lots of lights on like downlights or kitchen lights off to the side as they will scatter light across whole screen as a rainbow. It is the downside to their extra wide viewing angle layer which obviously OLED wouldnt have

      • How'd you compare those 2 against Bravia 7? On paper TCL 855 has better specs while X90L isn't really a mini LED. Bravia 7 has its own problem with view angle and refleactions, which is a downgrade from X95. I'd love to get my hands on 65" X95 if there's any around :(

The x95k i have and it has issues with reflections scatters light across the screen. The extra wide viewing angle is not really that useful unless you are always viewing way off angle but most users dont so its a bit of silly feature. I personally loved VA panels over IPS because of better contrast and colour performance direct on (how tvs are meant to be viewed)

          • @Savvy shopper1111: I didn't know that the extra viewing angle tech actually made it worse, I thought it's an advantage as reported by rtings in Bravia 7 review.

I don't think I'll be watching off angle constantly but the room allows me to "peek" slightly angled from kitchen, maybe that shouldn't bother me.

Which one is IPS? I thought all mini LEDs are VA. Now I'm thinking between TCL855 and B7 just couldn't decide :|

@spondbob: Any downlights anywhere will be annoying as hell unless they fixed it from the x95k. Take a friend or partner to the shop with a phone light etc, they can hold it up high while you bend down and see how it reacts to light hitting it.

Samsung s95D oled has the matte screen which dulls any reflections which is awesome even if some complain about some image quality issues. Its always tradeoffs, solve one problem create another haha

The TCL is much brighter and with significantly better colour volume. So it's not as straight forward as the Sony FALD algorithm and image processing being the end of the story. Although Sony has industry leading backlight control, the TCL has up to a few thousand more dimming zones than the X90L.

Your viewing environment and usage are also relevant. If you're in a light-controlled room and watch a lot of sport, the Sony might have the edge. However, if it's in a bright room and you watch a lot of HDR content, the TCL is probably the better choice. The brighter output from the TCL will mean the picture looks much better when the lights are on or there is daylight coming into the room. The HDR highlights are significantly better presented on the TCL so it's a much more impactful viewing experience - obviously HDR is a shit tonne better in a dark room, but the TCL has the oomph to make it still look excellent in a brighter room. The Sony not so much.

    • Thanks mate, I bought the 85" for $2.5k

  • Is the one the same model? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/819999

  • bought one last week at this price. then yesterday I saw the in-store price $1850. Does anyone know if I can buy in-store then return it using the online receipt, without taking the one I bought online to the store?
