Still holding out for the return of the $59/mo for 12 months with $500 GC deal. (;_; )

    • +32

You'll run out of breath soon.

    • That was the best, and I cancelled Telstra service due to poor reception and speed. So $500 GC for free.

    • I've been waiting 7 months. I had plans for that giftcard :(

    • And being able to transfer to a Telstra M2M contract then port out.

      Can't ever seeing that again

      • Yep. Got my wife a free phone with that. :D :D

        • Did it twice for a new phone and then used the voucher to grab an Xbox. Good times.

    • You'll need to find or invent that time machine then you're in luck

    • I gave up and started using Boost yearly Sims instead

    • Those deals are not coming back anytime soon (if ever) - source: ex-JB employee in telco

      • Opinion on ²nd best plan that is currently avaiable?

        • +2

Boost prepaid seems to have good deals, honestly you get the Telstra premium network without paying out of your a$$. No idea of any other good post-paid plans that are available. AFAIK Telstra premium network is limited to Telstra and Boost only.

  • +2

They're doing $1100 off a Google Pixel 8 Pro, which is better than paying up front for it and getting a gift card that you have to spend on something else
(Combined with a 24 month contract for $89/month for 300GB data)

    • $1100 off 256/512GB, $0 for 128GB

    • +5

Not a good deal if you keep the contract, and work doesn't pay for it though. $89/month is outrageous for a mobile plan.

I got the Pixel 8 pro 128GB for $765 in the end, After cancelling the Telstra plan, paying early termination and getting the $600 off sale. Could probably get better if you planned in advance.

    • -1

Yesterday I went JB to check out the Pixel 8, LOL, but Pixel 8 and Pro display models, cameras weren't able to start up, we were there for half hour, and no body knows what, why, when it happens and nobody can fix it.

    Unlimited SMS and MMS

Does the plan also Includes unlimited international calling too or only SMS and MMS?
    Thanks

No international calling packages are included in this offer sadly

For those that actually need this much data which is going to be 0.01%> the effective price of $47 for Telstra 5G is pretty good. Im holding out for an $1200 gift card on the $89pm plan which is what im on and currently due to expire in November this year.

    • +1

I'm 10 months into a 12 month plan and apparently I've used 10GB so far. This really isn't for me.

      • +3

You are much better off with an annual boost sim/esim.
I can generally get 30-40gbps of user per month but its still 10% of my allowance.

        • +1

Yeah, I made the mistake of clicking into this thinking of the JB deals of old that were actually good. No longer. I knew my usage wasn't high (I'm on a 150GB catch plan at the moment) but I wanted to jokingly post how bad this deal would be for me.

          • @freefall101: Double what I pay currently (with the gift card deducted) and I get stuck paying off a JB gift card over 2 years

        • I'm considering a Boost move. What is the typical best deal you see? I wouldn't use more than 15gigs a month (using less than 10 with Vodafone atm)

          • +2

@friz: If you are ok with the Optus 4G Network, the Amaysim 365 day deal you really cant beat.
            https://www.amaysim.com.au/sim-plans/12-month-sim-plans/unli…
$180 for 240GBs of data per annum, unlimited national calls and texts and international calls and text to 28 countries.
($60 of cashback through TopCashback Australia)

If you want Telstra 5G, the Boost 365 day $300 (now $260) plan is also equally as good.
            https://boost.com.au/pages/prepaid-plans
$260 for 260GBs of data per annum, unlimited national calls and texts and international calls and text to 50 countries.
            ($50 of cashback through Cashrewards)

            • @AircraftFreight: Appreciate the reply! Arw those about the best deals for a yearly SIM on the two networks? I'm assuming there is nothing with less data and a commensurate decrease in cost?

I'm on this VF SIM till next Jan, but I can always pre-purchase, if the expiry is appropriate.

              • @friz: I use Lebara 365 prepaid, if you buy one year on a larger plan you can max out your data bank and then next year switch to the small plan and you keep the data you've banked. I mainly use wifi for data usage so my data bank is basically always maxed at 200gb for buffer if I go over my plan for traveling or something one month.

                • @Agret: I’m using Lebara and the coverage is bad, I’m using it to wait out the 30 days to rejoin boost. But it’s very bad don’t like it. Even for international calls, after 10 mins into call the voice lags and the other party says that your voice comes after 10 secs gap. Thats what used to happen to me in Vodafone, or replay my conversation that took place 2 mins early, in an ongoing call. Its sounded very weird.

Since moving to boost I don’t have those issues with international calls, nor I i have a coverage issue. Best deal for people that often are on wifi and don’t use data more than 10Gb a month.

              • @friz: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/851404 - this deal. 170GB for $187.50. So long as you keep it under 15GB a month.

                • @freefall101: awesome. Yeah this would work if the ability to start it (with all the data included) was Jan 2025, when our current plan starts. I guess we look for something in this price range towards the end of the year.

    • 4k pr0n uses a lot of data, bro.

  • +11

Im not sure if these really are the deal they used to be

Spending $2136, to get $1000 back means you're still spending $550 a year for a plan youll likely use a fraction of

      • +1

There's no phone included, you just get the $1,000 giftcard.

      • +1

        Who told you that?

    • It works great if you are able to claim $89 a month on tax. You end up paying around $20 a month.

      • +4

What tax system are you working on?

        • +7

The flagrant tax fraud one evidently

          • +1

@OzBerghainer: Why is that? If someone is on the highest tax bracket, it makes it ~$50/month. Subsidise the $1000 gift card over 24 months and you're effectively paying $10/month. I don't see why one shouldn't be able to claim it on tax if they use it for work (or at least a high percentage, 80-90%, of their work).

            • +3

@Jaystea: Yeah many people have a work number and a personal number and can definitely claim 100%. Some people don’t know how to minimise their taxes ;)

      • +1

Even if we assume you're on the highest bracket - 45% - you'd be able to claim back $40.05 off the $89 - so would cost you $48.95 - how are you getting to $20??

If you're calculating the gift card into this - then you're just paying full RRP for the phone, and associating all the savings to the overpriced Telstra plan. Seems silly to me.

        • What phone? It is a gift card you may use to buy anything anytime and you don’t have to use it all at once.
It is definitely a good deal for people who need telstra service anyway. Don’t compare it with crappy resellers because reception isn’t the same. Boost is the only comparable service and this is cheaper if you consider the gift card even at $900 value and tax deduction.
A cheap Catch plan might work for you where you live and work but not for many others in other towns in the country.

          • +1

@Save 50 Cent: My bad, they did a similar deal that required the purchase of both the Telstra plan and a Pixel phone.

        • You claim the full RRP of the phone on work as well. And then you sell your phone every year to make up the other 55% of that difference. Ie. Free upgrade.

The only money you come up with is the $48.95/month which is $1174.8. But you get $1000 gift card to buy anything you want (whatever household product you need, or tv whatever) So effectively you are only paying $174.8 for the plan over 2 years. Thats $7.28/month.

If you sell your phone for >55% of the difference, keep the change. I tend to just trade in my iPhone every year as it’s easier than trying to get an extra $50-100 out of fb marketplace.

  • Did they finally close the loophole of cancelling the SIM after a month, and keeping some of the voucher credit? Seems like the entire face-value of the voucher is repayable (at a pro-rata)..

    • No, not while there's vouchers at this price and above, but you'd want a better deal than this.

  • Can u port to another provider and port back in one day? Lol

  • only if they add international calls on that 99$ plan then i would love to get . they used to have few years ago but not anymore so thyre loosing lot of customer who really need international calling.

  • Boxing Day 2022 had it for $1200 GC and the same card.

Deals are getting worst, but understandable

    • Waiting for the $1400 GC like last year to upgrade to the s24U

      • It was in early July last year. And they threw in a free Samsung watch 6 too so it worked out an absolute steel. We needed up getting two. One for the wife and one for me. We cancelled the plan after one month and paid the $800 voucher fee each.

  • Still waiting for the $200 GC deal. Into the 5th week. It was supposed to be within 2 weeks.

  • Are these plans treated as Full Telstra? Support for bolting on an eSIM Apple Watch?

    • Yes, full Telstra coverage.

    • +1

Full Telstra coverage, and Apple Watch eSim compatible.
Cannot data share with a hotspot.

    • +1

Yes. Have been able to add Apple Watch sim for $5 on this deal (same as usual Telstra). I can also share my data as a hotspot to my iPad/laptop etc and works great when travelling/in transit

  • spend $2000, get $1000 free

  • +4

So this is a $99 plan, and the fixed cancellation fee is $800, plus the first month $89 you had to pay you can make about $100 by sign up and immediately all Telstra to cancel.

    • Pretty just this, yep.

    • +1

Along with credit check done as well.

  • -2

    Scam deal

    • How? You’re not locked into a contract. You’re giving them $889 and they’re giving you $1000.

      • +1

        How you calculate that?

        • +1

$800 for the ETC + $89 for the first month charge

          • -1

@BargainsGrabber: They’ll take the gift card back too. They are not stupid anymore.

            • @Save 50 Cent: Nope, can confirm from the iPad deal that the trick still works
The promo is funded from JB, not Telstra

              • @BargainsGrabber: “If you cancel or move to a lower cost/different plan then you must pay a Voucher Repayment Fee to Telstra pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan’s minimum term.”

Hmmm ok but don’t be surprised if they decide to charge you for the cad on top of the plan cancellation fees though.

                • @Save 50 Cent: Yes I’m aware of that clause but when you sign up, they don’t change any of the maximum cover repayment fee amount on the T&C, that remains fixed

It has been confirmed by an employee on that deal (refer to the pinned comment)

The etcs for any 24 month sim only plan is whatever the base value of the original giftcard offer is, meaning promos like this the etc's don't change.

Many, including myself, have taken advantage of that deal since some JB stores allowed you to price match after signing up to the $1000 off any iPad

          • @BargainsGrabber: you can also get the first month refunded FYI.

            • @mahdoo: That’s hit and miss
I got mine refunded but others couldn’t

              • @BargainsGrabber: You just ask until you get it. Took me 4 tries.

                • @mahdoo: I got it on my first request for a refund. All sorted effortlessly via JB Mobile chat. Didn't have to talk on the phone to anyone.

  • Now $6/m cheaper than Telstra whereas it used to be $4/m more expensive. For ETC, you pay the base value of the GC so the payout is $800 per the CIS. You have to pay the first month fee on the spot so you’re really only getting $111 for free if you terminate. Nothing to run to the store for. You would want at least a $1200 GC for it to be worthwhile.

  • Do JB plans support adding on an Apple Watch?

    • +1

      yes

    • +1

Same as a Telstra plan — I added my Apple Watch sim for $5/month on this deal (Telstra)

  • Does optus now have Volte and wifi calling?

    • +1

JB Hifi mobile is under telstra.

      • Thanks I didn't realise it earlier.

  • Can you share the data with JB plans?

    • Seems like you can but cheapest upfront plan is $52pm and broadband plan is $19

  • What's the early termination fees like?

  • Can it work well in 5G gateway router as a home broadband connection?
My data usage only cap around 250gb per month.

  • FWIW The Good Guys has a better promotion for the $69 plan - you get a $600 voucher

    • +1

loos like JB gives $700 on the $69 plan https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/851722

      • that's the mobile broadband plan and GG's actually have the same $700 voucher deal.

JB only gives you a $450 voucher for the $69 upfront mobile plan.

  • Does the monthly invoice come from JB Hifi or Telstra?

    • Mine comes from Telstra

    • Curious about why this matters?

      • Work pays my Telstra bill

  • If I'm currently on a Telstra plan (no lock in), can I cancel that then sign up to this?
