Hmmm, wonder if JB will price match the deal plus the gift card (or reduce by another $40)?

    • +2

I would be very, extremely, really, indubitably surprised.

    • No they won't,had a word with them previously and they refused it straight away. Same goes for ow and tgg

      • Cheers mate.

Guess I'll continue to wait for JB to drop to $149 then… ironically they'd earn another $9 from me by price matching HN.

        • -1

Officeworks will price match and reduce the price a further 5%

          • @scottishdave: No they won’t because they don’t give you a $50 HN gift card.

            Needs to be identical

            • @azzaisawesome: It's also against their pricematching T&C to provide or match gift cards (i.e. they provide a JB gift card instead of a HN gift card).

I thought I'd try my luck still over live chat and advised that I'm waiting to see if they do another wicked wed deal with the G54 at $149 but if they could do $158 (basically same value as HN's deal), I'd be happy with that.

The JB rep could see the logic and that it would be a better sale for them but they don't have the authority to discount it this way.

Back to the waiting game I guess… might get bored and play hungry, hungry hippos instead :-D

I have both phones and In my opinion, if the budget allows, buy the G84. It's worth the extra dollars for the screen alone. It is full sunlight readable and the colour temperature is way more accurate. The G54 has a cool hue that you cannot correct with any settings and is quite dim in comparison.

Also the G54 noticeably dims and shifts in colour temperature as you shift off axis.

The G84, despite its old chip, scrolls noticeably smoother and does not seem to slow down even when you have a heap of apps running in the background.

I initially bought the G54 as a backup phone, but now after using them both, I would not hesitate to buy another G84.

The only reason I can see for anyone to buy the G54 over the G84, besides price, is it has esim, if that is important to you.

    • +2

It really is a pity the G84 doesn't have an esim in it. That UWA lens would make the camera 10x more useful for me than what the G54 offers.

But I can live with the G54's shortcomings. Most phones compared to my S23 Ultra will feel like a step backwards. I just need something that I can use to get by in case my S23U is lost/stolen when I am traveling.

      • As a backup phone, the G54 is fantastic. But after using them both, I would be annoyed, lol. Unfortunately, my G54 is not even worth selling, be lucky to get $100 for it:)

        • +1

Just as well, I don't want to pay more than $100 for mine - lol

I got Dad the G54 a few months back and it kinda saved them on their current trip. Amaysim roaming wouldn't work in Japan on all three of their Amaysim services… so I bought a travel esim, and walked Dad through installing it on the G54.

      • What do you use the UWA shot for? I take a decent amount of photos and while nice, it's not 10x more useful. Maybe 1.25x more useful.

        • I take a lot of photos of things where I cannot walk back anymore and need to get a large field of view in (e.g. currently building a house and some shots I need to get all of a wall or a room and I cannot walk back any further).

This is from a practicality point of view rather than composing a shot to look good.

When I did more photography as a hobby, I use to use my Canon EF-S 15-85mm lens (~24-135mm full frame equivalent) the most. Hardly took out my 10-20mm UWA. So if I was using the phone's camera purely as my DSLR/mirrorless replacement, year, I probably wouldn't need the UWA so much.

    • I went to jb to play around with the G84 but the brightness control is terrible as the useful range is at the end. Does it not have PWM, as the first 70% to 80% of the brightness control is very dark, doesn't feel usefull. Thoughts since you have them. And does the 695 snapdragon hold up as you start to put lots of apps and games, or will you regret it a bit

      • +1

I run my screen at 100% full time.. For my usage, which I would call average, I easily get a day and a half. I also do not use adaptive brightness.

I use gestures for apps and sometimes when I close them, I have had around 30+ apps running in the background and it doesn't seem to have any affect on operation that I can notice.

Can't comment on gaming though as I don't use it for that.

        • Nice you can run it at 100% and get that batt life out of it. Yea i wouldn't be playing games just lots of diff apps. Its a temp phone While i wait to see what Samsung releases, or if the moto ultra 40 goes 500 ish. Would the G54 be bearable to use. if this is a temp phone ?

          • +1

@Perthsucks: My opinion? As I said above. The G84 is absolutely worth the extra dollars.

If I could go again, I would just have kept my G82 vs the G54.

        • I have had around 30+ apps running in the background and it doesn't seem to have any affect on operation that I can notice.

You are living proof of the need for 12Gb ram, by some-users.

      • I have G84, brightness control is good IMHO, at minimum it gets pretty dim. Adaptive brightness was mentioned, perhaps it was turned on?

        • I went into a store to demo the g84 and it seems extremely too dark for like 60 to 70% of the brightness range then the last 30 to 40% was usable. Seem it might not have pwm to have finite control of the brightness

    • Kudo.

Thoses who love to neg: may be it's IN-appropriate for people to share their thoughts & be neg. Those who neg simply voice their-preferences. If their-preferences is somehow more-superior then EVERYone is using the same phone as them….& do-they ?

Buying a phone is based on personal-preferences & its subjective.

    • you’re saying to spend 40% more on on a deal on one of the most budget of phones

Isn’t it always true with budget items that every dollar extra you pay is a significant improvement?

That said thanks for your feedback, phone decisions suck

      • phone decisions suck

        May be you shouldn't neg others…your life-experience will shine-a-light on your-character & it's effective.

        • What r u talkin about

  • That sucks. I purchased the g84 yesterday and there was no bonus $50 gift card ;(

    • Return and rebuy? some places have 7 day return. if it was online order ask customer service to cancel the order (if it's not been sent out/picked up already)

      • Other way around - rebuy and return the new one with old receipt.

        • Thanks for the suggestions but I've already set up my phone and not going through that again for $50 bucks.

        • wouldn't the receipt have the IMEI number on it?

    • A few people (& I) have suggested that we'll get closer to $150…for months.
      And those who've neg me for missing-out @ $170 & who'll quietly taking up this deal…they're likely grinning right now-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15366868/redir
Unless you are on the IN-side, you have NO idea who much stock Motorola-AU have. It's most likely that Moto-AU are funding HN's discounting & are pulling all the strings.
If there're more $150 ish sales after this-deal, then may be Moto-AU stock-up too much, or simply want a bigger market-share….whatever their reason.

    • Should've just went the Big W deal, $269.10.

      • No big w in my town. Harvey Norman is the only place here with the Motorola deal.

      • +1

BigW didn't have many in stock

  • I'm honestly kinda tempted to get this just as a 2024 iPod Touch device.

Imagine a beautiful ozb community utopia where the first person buys it and claims the voucher to hand to the second person who uses it and passes the voucher to the third person and so on, until the last person hands their voucher back to the original purchaser. Everyone gets the phone for $158 except person 1 who pays $198 but with a $40 voucher.

    • +3

It's a nice thought but the flaw is in the fact that the first person would have to be a good samaritan and forgo paying less upfront (a problem when everyone here wants a deal)… and also when do we figure out who the last person is?

A implementable solution would have to require a group to be formed first so one can figure out who the last person is, and for person one to be subsidised somehow… say if there's 20 peeps, persons 2 to 20 would pay person 1 $2 for their trouble of not being able to use the gift card now, and everyone would get the phone for $160 and person 1 would also get the extra $40 gift card for a future transaction. Person 1 would probably do the work with coordinating the order of purchases and who each person passes their gift cards to… but they walk away with the extra $40 gift card for their troubles.

And yes, I really am a trained economist who has studied game theory properly and not gone all A Beautiful Mind suddenly.

      • Also depedning on WHEN you will received the voucher?

  • When this deal expires?

    • +1

      today

    • Many stores out of stock as usual, so get in asap if you need one/some

  • Do anyone know if you get virtual ram with the G54 on android 14?

  • Got two g84s at $170ea from OW. Price matched but scanned the wrong phones (supposed to be g54). Didn't realise until several hours later.

    • +1

I hope you don't need an esim!

      • +1

        Thankfully not, yet.

        • Then I hope you enjoy the better performance of the G84 then!

Had it been me, I'd have had to go back to get the G54 for that esim.

    • So unlucky, its better to return.

    • which store was it? ( I go after you LOL)

  • i ordered mine 5 mins before sunday midnight. so when do you receipt the gift card?

  • +1

Deal is still up on website for me… even after refreshing browser.

    • Still active right now

      • Maybe they didn’t move as many units as they needed to.

Word of that camera lens coating issue might be getting around.

        • Most stores got sold out by mid afternoon yesterday.

Guessing they're just trying to clear last of the stock thats left anywhere

          • @Huntakillaz: I see.

Hopefully we see some cheaper deals soon from other stores that are just as good or better.

      • The price is still the same instore, but the evoucher is finished. (read evoucher terms and conditions).
I went instore this morning to get one but the evoucher is finished, they could not do anything for me today.
The website needs to be updated, but if you put the phone in your cart and checkout there is no mention of the evoucher.
I passed on the phone today, the evoucher was the decider for me. I don't go into HN much but they had a working phone on demo, works nicely to me, was comparing to the Samsung A55.
Hey it would be cheaper soon I am sure.

    • You will not get the bonus $50 Harvey Norman gift card.

Bonus $50 Harvey Norman Gift Card T&Cs: Offer is valid from 11:59PM AEDT 15th June 2023 - 16th June 2024

  • i brought it at 11 55 pm on 16th June 2024 but only received the order email confirmation its ready to pick up at 10:48 am the next day..
    why wouldn't i receive the $40 gift card ?

are you issued the gift card instantly or only after you pick up the phone?
what if the price drops within 7 days of picking it up can you request the HN price beat guarantee?

    • You would not get a $40 gift card sorry, it should be a $50 gift card.

Just out of interest, in the order did it say you were getting a gift card?

FYI the web page is updated now, does not say you get a gift card like yesterday morning, I put it in the cart yesterday but said nothing about a gift card so I did not proceed.

      • $50 gift card was for the G84. The G54 got a $40 gift card.

        • Ok missed that one, I was only looking at the g84.
So did you buy online on instore, if online did the voucher come up/listed with the order?
          Thanks.

          • @fredk1000: Neither, I'm waiting for a better deal.

            • @Mugsy: Actually I am too, waiting. The current mobileciti deal is good but I don't want to join ebay plus.
What price are you waiting for? $199-250? How low do you think it would go?

              • @fredk1000: I'm actually looking at the G54… need that esim and this is only going to be a back up travel phone to my S23 Ultra.

I'm just hoping JB do $149 on a wicked wednesday sale again.

I'm utilising the $50 3G phone trade in offer (lucky for me, I do have a few 3G only phones to trade in) to bring it down to $99.

                • @Mugsy: Nice, I have a few old phones lying around, maybe I can trade one in too.
Will keep an eye out. Thanks.

  • If you are looking for your voucher, may want to check your junk mail….
