APP5OFF

Went to Japan last month and from my research, KKday had the best eSIM deals when comparing with Klook, TravelKon, Airalo etc.

Understand that TravelKon has a sale right now, KKday is still cheaper (keep in mind that these are normal prices, so KKday would be an even better option after TravelKon's sale). Comparing like-for-like:

From memory, they were Hong Kong eSIMs that used the KDDI 4G network. They were generally fast and reliable, and would use again.

Extra 5% off if you download their app and apply the code APP5OFF.

KKday is based in Taiwan and the base currency is TWD. Their exchange rates are spot on, can't say it's necessarily better to pay in TWD.

Daily traffic plan: After the traffic is used up, the speed will be reduced to 128kbps, and the traffic will be restored 24 hours after it is enabled (for example: it will be activated at 11:00 on the same day, and the high-speed 1GB will be restored at 11:00 the next day)

Total plan: disconnect the network after the traffic is used up

Before purchasing, please make sure that your mobile phone and its operating system support the eSIM function. If the order is canceled due to device incompatibility, no refund will be issued (please refer to the eSIM applicable model chart below)

iPhones sold in mainland China do not support eSIM. In Hong Kong and Macau, only iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone XS have eSIM functionality

  • Does the KKday app install the esims like Airalo does?

    • It provides you the QR codes via email. You can then scan them from the computer or save it as a screenshot and load it from your phone.

        Thanks for advising.

Doesn't sound like this is a viable option for my technologically challenged father then but I may have a use when I head to Japan next year.

This Japan and Korea eSim is actually quite good value:

        https://www.kkday.com/en-au/product/136436-japan-and-south-k…

Wish I knew about these guys two weeks ago. Mum and Dad are spending a month in Japan and Korea… and Amaysim roaming has decided to not work in Japan. Not knowing whether roaming would work in Korea or not, I was inclined to get an eSim that covers both countries. Ended up getting one from SimsDirect for $44 as it was the only one that covered both countries that I could find at the time.

        • Oh Amaysim roaming was working for me but I was only using it for receiving text messages. Had to configure it from both the website and on my phone.

          • @ronnknee: Yeah, I've configured it on the website (enabled roaming and have a roaming pack purchased) and roaming is enabled on all three of their phones with Amaysim services. But none worked in Japan (one had SOS), but all three worked in South Korea.

I suspect the phones aren't connecting to the right network in Japan, or the wrong APN was used… at which point Dad has no idea how to check the network he's on nor the APN being used. He gets frustrated and would prefer to go without internet (which is going to get him lost when he's in a country he doesn't speak the language).

It was a struggle to walk him through installing the esim via QR code and I can't be the one buying him esims every time he's on holidays (which for my parents is every second month) so I'm looking for something more streamlined with an end to end process that he can manage.

Currently Airalo looks to be it… not as cheap as other esim services but the process of buying, installing and using an esim seems to be relatively idiot proof.

  • From memories their Taiwan esim is also cheaper than travelkon and sim direct

  • Is there a valid time interval you have to activate it by after purchase?

From the webpage: "Valid within 180day(s) starting from the date of issue "

  • Do they have a sim/esim that works in both China and Japan?

  • I bought a few of these for my travel. Since we put in travel dates does that mean we can preinstall them on our phones?
I find the hardest problem is if we are travelling and in a foreign country with no data, how do we download an esim?
And if our esim is on our phone how do we scan our phone with our phone?
It seems it would be easier to open the QR code on our computer at home and then install the esim before leaving the country at the start of the trip
but it sounds like that might activate all of them at once at the date that you download
