Had an eye on this router for a while. A nice router with OpenWrt support. First time I've seen it under $200 since it launched.

EDIT: Despite saying free shipping at checkout- a heads up before you purchase, I just received an email from customer service:

Thank you for shopping with GL-iNet.

Suffice to say I will be requesting a refund, sorry to those that are remote that have made a purchase.

  • Hmmm I wonder how long till the Flint 3 or something that has Wifi 6E or 7.

As far as I know, the chip inside this is MediaTek MT7986 (Filogic 830), which does support wifi6E. 6E not being included in this model probably due to the 6GHz band is currently too short ranged to be practical. I haven't read up on Wifi7 specs so I'm not sure if Wifi7 somehow can extend the range of the 6GHz band to be comparable to the 5GHz. If it doesn't then it largely doesn't bring practical benefits to end users over Wifi6 (which has some major improvements over Wifi5)

Apple only starts supporting 6E this year, not even on all their devices. It will be a few years until the 6GHz band catch on with enough client devices. Until then, Wifi6 is still the sweet spot.

Suggest doing your own research on this router: https://forum.gl-inet.com/t/flint-2-gl-mt6000-bug-reports-co…

I have the Flint 2 and have been keeping it updated, but I have had some trouble over time keeping a connection. If you care about OpenWRT there's a bit of debate about the approach taken in the threads too.

    • Yeah I have this router and I couldn't get it to do QoS properly or reliably for my 1000/50 nbn throughput. This was when it first came out so it might have gotten better. But I've relegated it to AP duties. I regret buying it.

I will probably be replacing it with another $130 TP-link AX-55 Pro same as my main router. They just work 24/7right out of the box and do EasyMesh with 2.5Gbps Ethernet backhaul.

  • Nice, think this will definitely be my next go to router once my current Asus carks it.

I bought this router replacing my Asus RT-AC88U, (sadly end of life). I paid $220.00 with free delivery and AU plug from Amazon Australia.

I was looking at buying an Asus RT-AX88U Pro router but it was only available from the US at more than twice the price of the Flint 2, (same specs)

I have been using this router since Feb-Mar this year and have no complaints, been rock solid, does the job very well, excellent Wifi coverage in my house which is a single storey solid brick house built in the 1960's so no open spaces.

Would I buy again -YES and I saved my self some money.
