Was there an M3 version? Or did they skip that (to placate the OCD and keep the numbers even)? I have an M2 version but never heard of anything other than that until now?
There is no M3 version. I'm convinced the new iPad models were introduced to display the power of M4.
The tandem oled is a great advancement in display tech. The most useful takeaway from the new ipads is that m4 and oled are coming to the macbook pros, which for professional use is genuinely exciting.
Sadly the iPads (and iPadOS specifically) don't seem to display any of the power other than maybe benchmark tests. From use and pretty much all online reviews people struggle to notice real-world differences between this and even M1 iPads. I'll caveat this by saying very heaving video editing will likely see faster processing times so if that's the case being used it may make it worthwhile and still the question would be why not get a Macbook with MacOS instead.
I'm keen to see if iPadOS evolves with pressure from SnapDragon Elite
Apple silicon is amazing. My 3rd Gen 11” iPad Pro M1 is still blazing fast.
Sadly, it’s held back by iPadOS.
@giventofly: Yes - was waiting for WWDC to see if apple was going to make any significant changes to ipadOS to make use of extra power, sadly its all QoL (which are still great) changes instead of actual usable changes for this chip
@giventofly: Honestly I doubt Apple will ever make the ipad as useful as a macbook, that would cannibalise sales. The only real answer to getting work done on an iPad is by using it as a companion to a macbook, as a second screen, using the pen, etc. This will always be what they want the product category to be because it makes more money.
Only reason I bought the M4 ipad is as a second mastering monitor for the mac when video editing, which for that purpose it's incredible. Especially considering that out of the box it's the most colour accurate display you can buy under $20k if Linus is to be believed
