Exetel nbn Price Increases Incoming

Been on a legacy 50/20 Exetel NBN plan for almost 5yrs. As I understand, new NBN wholesale pricing is taking effect on 1 July.

Just got an email from Exetel advising of $10/mth increase to $79.99.

Just as well, I'm a few months from moving to a new house so I guess I'm not relocating my current NBN service and will be looking for a new one (could still be with Exetel but currently swaying towards Future Broadband).

    Yep time to cancel.

    • +1

      Have a look at Spintel
Ive been with them since 2012
Always been the best (ongoing) price
      Always given good service

      • +1

What's your experience with spintel's customer support and also their latency (for gaming)? I'm trying to get away from Optus and weighing up my options. Leaptel's 100/20 plan seems good and they have a good rep but spintel offers cheaper plans.

        • +1

I'm on fibre w/SpinTel (100/20) and latency is great, generally 8-12ms to the au servers I play on.

        • I'm on fibre with Spintel (250/25), and based in sydney The latency is very good for the games I play (cs/val/league).

        • +1

Spintel only have a POP in NSW and your latency from VIC will be higher. Spintel use Optus for backhaul.

    https://prontobroadband.com.au

NBN 50/20 is $50 per month for the first 6 months, then $75.

Pronto are a Superloop/Exetel reseller, so it will be effectively the same company, minus some of the frills.

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/3yqmk5p6#r73779055

If you hate looking for a new provider every 6 months and insist on the lowest "normal" price, then Kogan's NBN silver is $70 after the promotional period.

    https://www.koganinternet.com.au/plans/

This is all assuming you want to stick with 50/20 and don't want to downsize to 25/10, which can be found for cheaper.

  • Just got the same email, been with Exetel since I moved into my house 6 years ago. I had kept it because I didn't want to lose my phone number and I originally ported over with my home number to VOIP. Funnily I haven't actually used the number in about 7 years, but it was one that was easy to remember. I think it's time to say goodbye to the landline number and get a cheaper service.

    • +3

Port the phone number to a cheap voip provider and hold on it.

      • +1

Yeah, but it's included with my current plan. Getting another service will add extra cost that I'm not currently paying

          • @So Was Red: You can get the whirlpool plan that costs 35c per month for your DID.

Well worth it to not have to worry about an RSP trying to screw you over.

    • +1

I'm the same with wanting to keep my landline number, the free PAYG VoIP was attractive as I only use it for incoming calls.

      • What's the reasoning for even having it though? I can't think of a reason to have a personal land line now. Even my workplace doesn't have land lines anymore and it took me about a year to notice.

        • It's kinda silly, I agree. We kept it for calls from people who only have our landline number or can't/don't want to call our mobile number (eg overseas relatives). But of course now anyone who only had out landline number has passed away, and anyone calling from overseas will use WhatsApp etc.

The only reason to keep it now is that it was a pretty cool, easy to remember number!

    • +1

Was the same years back, wanted to keep the VoIP number (still have it) but don't even have it logged in anymore. Back when MyNetFone had the $5/year plan I switched the in-laws phone line to it, eventually they agreed they didn't need it and just cancelled it when they canned that plan and wanted to charge $5/month.

You could switch to Superloop for the honeymoon rates and keep it PAYG for no extra cost.

The Crazytel WP deal being mentioned is probably the way to go though. At 35c/month you can switch to any other RSP and still be paying less than Exetels new prices and not have to worry about moving the number around if you want to change NBN providers in 6 months. Looks like the $2 signup credit can be used towards your DID too so really nothing to pay for 5 months.

    • +1

Actually, was just talking to a family member about it, you can cancel your NBN service and keep the VoIP with Exetel still at no cost for the PAYG plan.
They have their VoIP still like that after having trouble transferring it out, so they ended up just leaving it with Exetel.

  • +1

You know NBN. Want you to pay more so they can get high avg revenue per user for bandwidth that is sitting mostly idle.

    • +3

Sounds like the CEO is looking at Ferrari and Cartier…

  • +8

Bear in mind that you need to give Exetel 30 days notice.

    • +1

Given that Exetel are increasing the price, I would be very surprised if they enforced the notice period. I could be wrong though.

      • You are wrong.

        • You may be right but if everyone who gets charged lodges a complaint a TIO enquiry is still going to cost them more.

  • +7

I got the email from Exetel as well to raise price for my 50/20 plan to $79.99.

That is fine, costs go up but

How come new customers can get the same thing for $78.99 after the promo period?

    • That was the first thing I noticed too. Assuming I won't be locked into a contract, I may as well switch to the current 50/20 plan and get a discount while I ride out these final few months where I am living.

    • Churn to Superloop. Same company, get the new customer deal.

      • In-laws are on Superloop. Just got the e-mail today, their 50/20 going from $74.99 to $81.

        Might switch them to Pronto.

  • NBN and RSPs as a whole are trying to eventually phase out the NBN50 plan, basically as cost effective to move to the NBN100 plan

    • +3

Be nice if i could get 100, mine caps out at 54 :(

      • +1

Same. I'd do 100/20 plan or whatever but I can only get 60 down max line speed.

      • +1

        Pray for fibre upgrade.

    • +2

Only in NBN land which is cheaper to have bandwidth on standby in case you need to meet everyone's needs at 100Mbs instead of 50Mbs.

    • Yeh NBN still trying to make it look profitable so they can sell it off.

For them they've got the infrastructure there, so if they can get someone to pay $100/month instead of $50/month (no idea what the figures actually are) for essentially the same thing on their end you can see why they are trying to push everyone off the lower speed plans.

  • +2

just got off the phone with Exetel the best they can do is 71.99 a month…for me i am gonna to jump

    • What did you say to them for them to offer a discount?

      • +2

I did the same yesterday and got the same discount "down" to $71.99 per month for 12 month no lock in. After that $79.99 or whatever the price by then. Just simply tell them not happy, too expensive, cancel my connection. They will pretend to "check with supervisor" then offer the deal to retain customer.

        • +2

I sent cancellation request by email yesterday (Tue) to sales email address but decided to do call today (Wed) just in case. On hold for 30 seconds, person did exactly same thing. Originally offered $75.99/m for 12m, then 'spoke to supervisor' and came back with $71.99. Declined and went ahead with cancellation. Have to pay through to 12 July (30 days). Next bill will be pro-rata'd.

    • +1

Got the same price. I'll wait and switch when convenient to leaptel or when another good offer comes along

    • +1

Yes, we all the same. Rang up (painful 40 mintues wait despite their system predicted 10 minutes in queue), got offered $75.99, then $71.99. Then I told them jacking up price twice in 7 months for 45% is not moral. Then cancelled anyway.

Just a side note, when you cancel it, they still impose the 30 day advance policy. But according to customer service, it will be pro rata, so we don't have to carry on for another full month.

      • +1

I tip my hat to you for cancelling anyway. Bravo!

Had they only passed on the $2.50 increase, I may have remained loyal. But after 5yrs, I'm gonna head to FBB for the NBN service at the new house.

  • I'm in a similar boat.. had a look and it seems the Oz bargain way now is to churn every 6 or so months with different providers?

    • Unfortunately, not a great option for me… I WFH so need a consistently reliable NBN connection.

      • +4

It literally goes down for a few minutes if churning just after midnight if you’ve schedule it in advance.

Just have it done on the weekend instead.

        • +2

Changing ISP in minutes it isn't guaranteed. It can take a couple hours or days at worst if the order gets stuck and if nbn are doing maintenance stuff. It's best to change ISP on weekdays.

          • @Twix: And it can be problematic for new estates. For our current place (also a new estate), NBN had to dick around for 3 weeks before they resolved our issue.

I was able to get a Spintel mobile broadband service ordered, modem delivered and had it up and running for over a week before NBN sorted out Exetel service. Granted it was the first ever service so the second and later ones could be less erroneous. But both my wife and I need the internet to be functional for work or our home business. I'm better off going with a reasonable ongoing priced service that is reliable instead of jumping between 6 month discounted contracts to save a few bucks.

            • @Mugsy: Yeah Exetel pricing still is not bad. Do you have FTTP in the new estate?

              • +1

@Twix: Yep, FTTP. I have to admit that it feels like a waste to not get a faster connection but the household is just my wife and I and 50/20 is plenty fast for two people. Exetel is good in that if we have guests over and they're using our internet, I can use the speed boost to make it 100/40 for 24hrs… though we rarely have guests over so I haven't had to activate it for that purpose… used the speed boost for the first time two days ago.

I'll see what becomes of Exetel's new service pricing… if $80/mth is competitive still, I might stay with them still.

Mum and Dad are with Future Broadband (thank heavens I got them in on that grandfathered $45 12/1 plan when I did)… pretty reliable too which is why I was considering them.

                • @Mugsy: Future Broadband are a great RSP, rock solid - the only negative is that overseas speeds aren't that fantastic.

LeapTel with their 12 month honeymoon prices on their faster plans is who I usually recommend these days.

            • +1

@Mugsy: Leaptel might be a good option for you.

              • @Cheapskate Paul: Cheers bud. Assuming their pricing doesn’t change too, they seem good.

          • @Twix:

Changing ISP in minutes it isn't guaranteed

Whilst it may not be, churning on FTTN in 2 different places over a dozen times and they’ve all been actioned within a few minutes once it’s done.

As I said, do it on a weekend if they’re so worried. And if they’re so worried about having a constant connection, they’d have a fully fledged backup ready to go.. right?

Edit: just saw they’re on FTTP, so new connection will be established on the next port. So even less of an issue as they can both be lit up at the same time.

            • @Nousernamehere: A fast ISP change can be done but not all the time.

Yeah a backup service is the way to go if required.

Not always. The ISP can takeover the same NTD UNI-D port that's in use or a spare UNI-D port. Also if you have Gigabit and you order a Gigabit service on a spare UNI-D port it won't go through.

            • +1

@Nousernamehere: The concern isn't with the churning process… it's more so the NBN technicians having trouble with newer estates. In our complex up to 3yrs after moving in, we were still hearing about issues with other residents moving in and NBN taking weeks to get sorted following the previous occupants in their lot leaving.

Our back up service is our mobile phones (or I go into the office). For most years, I'll use 40Gb of the 120Gb on my mobile service because I'm on wifi that much at home or in the office. There's enough data to use as a back up. But 3 weeks on only mobile data isn't going to cut it for work.

I also have other things to do than dick around with the internet every 6 months… we just need a service that's reliable and has a reasonable ongoing cost. Some have been able to negotiate $71.99/mth with Exetel so I'll likely try that first.

              • @Mugsy: If its important to keep a stable reliable service and the service has been good then perhaps the $10 increase is worth it? Plus you can claim a large % as work from home deduction.

              • @Mugsy:

With FTTP there is no ‘churn’ though, unless you specifically ask for it to be on the same port as your existing connecting. Any new connecting is just lit up on the next port so you can have up to 4 separate at the same time. You keep seeming to confuse the initial set up issues with just lighting up another port. They’re 2 completely different issues and aren’t related to each other.

I also have other things to do than dick around with the internet every 6 months

It’s barely 5 minutes of work to save a decent amount of money for every 6 months. If that’s not worth it for you, why bother making this thread whinging about your plan going up?

        • Those that churn often, do you schedule to churn on the last day of billing period or allow a few days before just in case something goes wrong?

          • @Ninja9:

Those that churn often, do you schedule to churn on the last day of billing period or allow a few days before just in case something goes wrong?

I’ve usually churned the day before my plan is due to expire. Never once had an issue. Last time I left Superloop though they just cancelled it randomly when I gave my 30 day notice. Signed up with Exetel and was back online in a few minutes.

If you’re worried just set it up 2-3 days before your existing connection is due to end/roll over for a RSP that doesn’t require prior notice and shouldn’t have an issue.

            • @Nousernamehere: superloop gave me the run around trying to enforce the 30 day notice of disconnection.

would not accept 30 day notice via chat.
would not acknowledge as legitimate, me giving 30 day notice via email.
tried to force me to phone retentions team during business hours.

not sure they realised they didn't have my bank details for direct debit.
in the end I just churned to another provider and superloop sent me notification of the transfer.

              • @Antikythera:

superloop gave me the run around trying to enforce the 30 day notice of disconnection.

Yep they tried the same thing for me. All the chat support guy could say is that he could send it to the cancellation team and hopefully they can cancel it. He claimed I had to call due to having to verify my account, even though I verified all my identity on the chat already…?

Just stay firm and ended up they then cancelled it, about 10 days into a month and then sent me an email about it. I was pissed though as I paid for the whole month already, but they refunded me the entire month the next day and I signed up to Exetel in a few minutes :-)

            • @Nousernamehere: So you sign up with the new provider on the day?

              • @Ninja9: Usually I sign up and schedule my signup for a couple of days beforehand. That way it usually goes through around midnight so I wake up and the new connection is live in case I forget to do it.

You can just sign up right then and there when you want to and it should transfer anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours. The actual downtime of the connection (for FTTN) is only a few minutes though.

  • I received the same email so I just sent an email to Exetel about my 30 days notice for the cancellation

    • +1

Does it mean if billing is half way, you get pro rata charge?

      • Yep I'm keen to know this too! My current NBN billing period covers up to 29 June. If I cancel today, I assume that means I have to pay up to 10 July. Are we assuming that next month we will be pro-rata charged? And so we should only switch providers a few days before 10 July (in my case)? My worry is if I switch now, I'll end up being charged til 10 July even if another provider takes over NBN service.

        • +1

I called them and cancelled over the phone. There’s no way around the 30 day notice.

I will see what’s available to sign up in 3.5 weeks.

          • @asdfasdfasdfasdf: Yep likewise. Just cancelled via phone now. Have to pay through to 12 July (30 days notice). Next bill will be pro-rata'd. Will check out best deal in 3.5 weeks too. Hopefully Proton bargain still live. Kogan EOFY $10 off offer: Ends 30/06/24…

            • @daffodil4me: I must have got lucky. Cancelled yesterday, only paying through to 29 June.

  • Same here, im with them for more than 7 yrs now and will be moving in a new house too. There prices in the website were not yet updated.

    • I called to cancel and tell them I’m moving, they offered me the deal for new customer on the website ($61 for 50/20 for 6 months).

  • +7

Many pages of searching later, I think I found the right email to send a cancelation request to: [email protected].

    You are welcome.

    They make it near impossible.

    • Thanks! My current NBN billing period covers up to 29 June. If I cancel today, I assume that means I have to pay up to 10 July. Are you assuming that next month we will be pro-rata'd? And so we should only switch providers a few days before 10 July in my case? My worry is if I switch now, I'll end up being charged til 10 July even if another provider takes over NBN service.

      • +1

They will charge you as normal on the 29th, then should refund pro-rata after cancellation.

    • +3

I tried sending them an email for cancellation in the past and they just replied that cancellations need to be done over the phone..

      • I called at 6.54PM tonight and was only on hold for 30secs. Cancelling took minutes (after they offered me two lame retainer offers). While annoying, suggest giving that a go. (I also emailed yesterday but hadnt heard back, so decided to call). 30 days notice does indeed apply.

    • @indomie Their Rep on Whirlpool claims 'phone' is the only way to cancel, that sounds dodgy as shit to me as you don't need to call them to 'sign up' but there you have it anyway.

Please let us know how you get on.

      • +2

Yes, they ignored my emails. I cancelled over the phone today (20 min wait) and my cancellation date is 11 July.

        • +2

That's bullshit isn't it. Absolutely no reason to make you call to cancel other than them wanting you to talk to the retentions team to try and sway you to stay.

If you can order a service over the internet you can Goddamn cancel one over the internet too as far as I'm concerned.

    • sent an email to [email protected] on Tuesday didnt get any response..

ended up calling Exetel today (Friday) on 13 39 38 to cancel the service only waited around a minute(called around 8:45 am) for them to pick up and took about 15 minutes altogether including their pitch to try to retain me. Said i was going to Kogan as it was cheaper.

Feel sorry for the guy trying his best. The only thing he could try to sway me with was that their "service was better"

  • +6

Exetel offered to discount and then price match when I called to cancel. Worth a shot.
It was about 20 mins wait although their phone sys kept saying only 5 min wait the entire time :(

    • +1

      Price match with Kogan?

      • Yes - possibly with any you find. They matched Leaptel for me.

        • Cheers for posting your experience. I might try the same.

  • I currently pay $75.70 per month with Exetel on their 100/20 plan (with 5 speed boosts a month to 250/25). Been on this plan for over 12 months now, its great, don't plan on changing if they leave me be with that pricing :)

    • I'm with Exetel on the same plan (with the same boosts) but I pay $88.99. How do you get it so cheap?

      • +1

I ported in on one of the usual 6 month discount promos, which I had done a number of times with different providers and at the end of the 6 month period I got an email from them saying they would offer me a permanent $10pm discount if I stayed, so I accepted the deal.

This was before I had even initiated a cancellation lol, so don't know if they can see NBN records for an address and could see I was porting every 6 months~? I remember posting about it ages ago and at least one other person posted up saying they had been offered the same deal, so it wasn't just me.

Don't know what accounts for the rest of the discount, they must have just put the base price of the plans up in the meantime and I'm still on the old pricing I guess.

I could save like $5 a month if I kept doing the porting round about every 6 months but $75pm is cheap enough for me to not bother anymore.

        • +1

Checked and I was actually on 100/40. I got an email today that it is going up from $88.99 to $94.99. I would be happy with 100/20 so I called Exetel up but they would not offer anything great so I put my 30 day notice in to churn away to a better deal.

    • You might be right with it for a while. NBN is trying to push everyone on to 100 and faster plans, so offering better prices for those and increasing prices on slower plans.

  • everyone getting cheaper, exetel more expensive

    • +2

It's not just Exetel. Telstra, Aussie BB and Optus have announced 25/5-10 and 50/20 is getting more expensive. More ISPs might do the same come July.

      • +4

ahh, right, the cheaper plans go up, more expensive go down, gotchya

    • -2

This is the inevitable result of building the NBN regardless of cost.

It was supposed to be cheaper, people were not supposed to be pushed onto more expensive plans, private enterprise was supposed to be falling over themselves to buy the NBN.

      All false.

      • Somebody watched Field of Dreams too much… thought if they built it, we would come.

  • Churning to SpinTel, but the pronto deal does sound better
    https://www.spintel.net.au/home-internet/nbn

    • One caveat for Spintel I noticed, if you need to opt out of CGNAT they charge $5/m for a dynamic IP and $11/m for static!

  • Does anyone know Pronto prices increasing or staying the same?

  • +3

There is definitely price fix going on
    Royal commission ensues

    • NBN is the new Post Master General's (that became Telecom Australia and Telstra)
