Seagate 12TB Enterprise 3.5" SATA 7.2K RPM Hard Drive - $192 Delivered @ East Digital

430

[13/6 22:45 - Looks like they've restocked, although the price has changed to $8 more. Also to note is that the condition now says "Pull from new machine,0-1 hous test time, bulk", as opposed to the "new 0 hours" previously.]

First deal post so be kind. I just wanted to share this after purchasing one myself as it seems like a good price for those just needing some simple storage.

I was about to buy a Seagate 8TB Barracuda off Amazon for $249. But then came across this hard drive that's cheaper and with 4TB more storage so I went with this one.

Not sure what the exact or technical differences are between this and the Barracuda or the Exos ones. Apparently they're a bit more noisy compared to the Barracuda? Do tell if you're knowledgeable about them. I'm not running this as a NAS or running it 24/7. Just adding it as a drive on my PC that I will use to clone backup some external HDDs so I think this one should suffice.

  • Seems good. Can this be used as a WD blue replacement?

Barracuda drives are SMR. Exos are CMR. Reference

SMR drives are slow with extended writes, but fine for reads. Reference

  • How good are these enterprise drive for a CCTV? Dont need anything special but considering that it’s not much more than a 4tb WD purple i’m considering grabbing one

    • They have Skyhawk ones too they're Seagate's purple equivalent. I got one there for my udm, so far so good.

      • Unless you actually use a dedicated NVR - your purple and skyhawk won't be able to use their firmware and will act like normal drives. So most people are better off using WD Red/Iron Wolf/Exos with their cameras.

FYI. The business is based in Hong Kong. I paid with PayPal.

  • Seems people have good experience with ED: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/848738

This is cheaper than other deals listed in other thread too

I have bought 4 HDD from their shopify store and they are excellent even with after sales

I am a little surprised at their presales support. I've contacted them a couple of times in the last month and received indecipherable responses that seem like almost random words pulled out of thin air.

Two of these from this mob have been working fine on my server. They can be a little bit noisy when doing random access but silent when idling.

Why buy just a? Minimum 2?

  • Sold out.

  • Bah, could have used this to bump up the NAS's capacity

  • The one I bought for them is so noisy. Grinding and clicking sounds.

    • It's possible the drive is damaged during transport. Same thing happened to me, it sounded terrible and once I had applied for a warranty return the replacement was a lot quieter.

      • No. Seagate exos and datacentre drives are naturally noisy.

    • It's normal.

  • Damn, y'all seemed to like this deal seeing as we bought them all lol.

Maybe I'll post more bargains that I come across..

  • Btw this seller has an ebay store where these are still in stock here

    • Nice find. Although I think it'll cost a little bit more as you'd have to pay GST on eBay. Still not a bad price though.

    • Thanks! Only about $7 more than their Shopify store.

      • Even less i got 2 for 187 each just make sure you pay in usd using a non fee card

        • I used HSBC fee free but I guess their exchange rate is less favourable than your card, mine came out around $191 each.

  • Am I the only one concerned they are refurbished drives?

It says "CONDITION - New 0 Hour Use Time, BULK"?

      • I know but from the images they look like 2019 models and the zero hour count can technically be reset. They may be old new products. Time will tell. I’ll update here after I inspect and scan them.

        • +2

Mine just arrived today. 2019 DOM. Which doesn't bother me if it is indeed 0 hours use time.

What application do you use to scan it?

          • +2

@cornflakes: Mine arrived today also. 2019 also. Used crystal disk to check it. Seems legit. Looks like they’re back in stock so I might order another.
Going to use in a RAID 1 NAS. I’m a bit new to NASs so do you think I’m doing it wrong?

            • +3

@BargainGain: Surprised how quick it arrived because I thought it was coming from HK. Used Crystaldisk to check mine too and seems good (although apparently they can also reset values such as hours used when they refurb. Don't think it's the case though.

Not sure on the NAS aspect sorry, I've never built one. Just using this as simple storage on my PC as I never really transfer files on the home network anyway. RAID would be good for backup purposes though in case one fails.

            • +1

@BargainGain: If it were me considering the size and that you only have 2 disks I too would use RAID 1.

RAID 0 would mean if either the disk fail you would lose your data I don't feel like the increase in write speed is worth it.

              • @sighduck: Thanks for your reply! That’s the idea. I just want a network accessible backup location for important but rarely accessed data. Data integrity is my priority rather than speed.

          • @cornflakes: I can't picture a scenario where something so widely accepted/used would be sat somewhere for 4-5 years unsold.

            • +2

@Ulysses31: I'm guessing being enterprise drives they were mass produced and sat somewhere in storage for that long perhaps? Maybe covid had an effect too with everyone out of offices so not many PCs were being built/upgraded. Now with excess stock they've decided they need to offload it so they flog it off to resellers like these - at least that's what I'm telling myself so I can believe that they're brand new ones and not refurbished lol.

            • @Ulysses31: Same issue I have, I just dont believe it.

    For anyone wondering:

I ordered two. One arrived from within Australia and the other was sent from Hong Kong via TNT (seperate orders, both arrived within 3~4 business days).

It is my opinion these are NOT new drives. Although the SMART data indicates they are new, there is physical evidence that makes me believe otherwise. The HDD case of one of the drives had marks from where the drive was mounted into a cradle.

Both drives have very minor corrosion/chemical/moisture/finger marks on some of the metal surfaces. These arent a big deal and may have just occurred with handling.

Looking at the connectors I can see that they have been plugged into something before. Whether this is from the testing at the Seagate factory/eastern digital or not, I can’t be sure.

To me, it’s the mounting marks along the side of the drive that indicate these are used drives. I could be wrong. This is just my opinion. They seem to work ok but that doesn’t mean much if they fail next week.

    • +2

Not disagreeing about your comments at all, I think there is a possibility of it not being brand spanking new. I guess something we'll never know.

But re: mounting marks from cradles, didn't they mention they removed the drives from new servers that they purchased? Again, it could just be a cover story. But it makes more business sense to me that they bulk buy complete servers and part it out. I feel like the time and effort required to reset the smart data or clean up the drives to pass as new would outweigh the profit made? Or maybe it's actually not that much of an effort at all?

It doesn't mean much if they fail as you say. But for now I'm happy with the purchase, as I think it was good value per TB for these drives. And the 3 year 'warranty' I guess does help with that too. I think if you're running a serious server with important data then maybe you don't want to chance it. But for simple storage I'm happy to balance that risk.

I just received mine which arrived from HK took about 11 days to arrive. Was very well packaged with foam padding in a box and wrapped in a bubble satchel.

Physical outside condition of the drive is perfect, can't see any marks or nicks on it.

Checking info in CrystalDisk mark shows power on time of 28390 hours and power on time is 34 count.

Running a full scan on the HDD atm, will take some time

    • So how did it go?

Also 28390 hours is 3.24 years of power on time non stop damn

      • +3

These were supposed to be effectively brand new right….are you sending them back? Have you contacted the supplier? What explanation did they offer?

        • this is also what I want to know

        • +1

The reply email from them was this..

          "Hello,

Sorry, it may be a mistake made by a colleague.

Would you be willing to keep it? We can offer you a 20% discount for a refund.

If you cannot accept it, you can refund it to us"

Ended up doing a full test and HDD passed. Got a $37 refund for their mistake.

Dealing with the over email was very quick and refund me the amount quickly. So essentially i got a 12TB drive for $150

      • +1

Got mine, power on time was 0 and power on count was 1. Also running tests on the drive.

        • glad to hear yeah these guys seem to the best value around hopefully the drive lives long and well

  • Not sure if in stock but I just bought one.. Gonna try a gamble

  • Back in stock and 2$ cheaper
