It's mini, so you have space for a powerbank, which is a must with this phone

    • +1

Have one so can relate to this comment, was tempted to “upgrade” to a 13 mini but I’m guessing I’ll have same issues. Can’t let go of the sizing of it

      • +4

Apparently 13 mini is better, but I wouldn't expect wonders there.

And with the newer iOS versions it's going to get worse, as they're going to add new features that require more processing.

Anyway, I can see my 1.5yo 12 mini's charge going down as I type it.

        • I have a 13 mini, battery dies by evening without top up (had it for 18months, battery health is 74%)

        • My 12 mini is almost 3 years old and the battery is at 84%.

          • @ilikeit: Yeah, mine too. After I check the news before getting up in the morning, starting at 100%.

And with all seriousness, mine's health is at 86%.

If you don't use your phone much, it can probably last a day. But then, when you do use it…

            • @pizzaguy: It's a good digital detox then.

            • @pizzaguy: I’m thinking about getting my Dad one and he just uses it, very slowly I might add, for News, Facebook and a few sports apps. Would it easily last him the day do you think?

      • I’ve had a new 13 mini (from Apple Store) since March last year.
A full charge lasts me pretty much a full day and some more.

Not a super heavy user but not a light user as well.
Safari, some apps etc. (non gaming apps)

      • +3

Had a work phone 12 mini and now a private 13 mini.
The 13 lasts longer, has more grunt and the camera is better.
But you can still find good deals on a 12 mini, even new ones, whereas it is harder to get a 13 mini.
both had markedly longer battery life than my previous iPhone 8, but in comparison to larger current phones, less.

The laws of physics can be a bitch.

        • +2

The size of it is soooo much better, don’t think I can bring myself to buy a bigger one

      • I had a 12 mini for a long time. Even with a healthy 12 battery, I easily noticed significant improvements in battery life, and significant reductions in overheating too.

        • It's been colder recently, and I already forgot about the terrible overheating in this model.

It's too often impossible to charge mine over 80% because it's too hot. You can't carry it next to the powerbank, because that's extra heat. That's terrible especially on holidays in summer - you want to take pictures or look things up more often (while charging it, because all of that drains the battery). Simply won't charge over 80% until you put it on a cold surface with AC on. Torch won't switch on while overheating too.

      • I had a 12 mini and upgraded to a 13 mini. There's a noticeable improvement in battery life.

        • Oh yeah? Was tempted to trade in and upgrade while I can still get some value

          • @Madfrega: Yeah highly recommend it. Love my 13 mini, don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. I imagine I'll be holding onto it for quite a while as there don't seem to be any mini phones on the horizon. That being said if a new one did come out I don't know what I'd be upgrading for at this point, it does everything fantasticly.

            • @LanceVance: I would get a new one in this size in a heartbeat.
but we are a small minority it seems.

  • Are the "As New" worth the extra $16?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175138902015

    • +8

Bought "As New" from Greengadgets. They were heavily used with 720+ charge cycle. Dirty too, with visible scratches. Shocking, really.!

      • How do you check for charge cycles on the minis?

      • Lol I have made the same mistake before. Apparently, just buy the cheapest one they sell.

      • Just bought an ‘As New’ 15 Plus which had 17 charge cycles and first activated on 21st April 2024.

Must have been lucky to get such a pristine condition phone at $1040.

    • +1

Boost do “as new” as well. I got a refurb 13 mini “as new” and there were no marks on it, but battery was 85%

    • +2

Their "As New" devices are a joke.

I recently got and returned a 13 mini from their eBay store. It is not even qualified to be in "Good" condition.

      • Agreed! I also bought one which was not in the described 'as new' condition. I would of graded it 'poor-very poor'. The shell looked like it had been dragged across a driveway. It had chips out of it all around the edges and around the camera lens. Obviously had not been used with a case, and dropped many a time. Battery health only just above the 80% mark. The charging port was full of dust/hair strands… Eek. Turned me off buying refurbished goods. At least the screen only had 'light' scratches!

I contacted them straight away requesting return and refund. Was asked to supply photos and 'was I sure that I had not dropped it or submerged it in any liquids?'. Of course not, I've only just opened the thing sitting on a lounge! I went through a few back and forth messages with them which could've been addressed in fewer messages. Was provided a reference to their grading description of the item I purchased which I already could see in the item listing and told that I could exchange for another one - No thank you, just the refund which I asked for in the first instance thanks! At least they were prompt to reply I guess.

Brand new for $398 (green or red) with the code FYZ15.

    • +7

READ: NOT A "NEW" PHONE. A serial number check shows a purchase date 3 years ago, and no Apple warranty. But, it comes newly boxed, with 100% battery, and flawless condition. The seller offered a full refund. However, for the price, I am decided to keep it. Apart from the warranty, it is no different to a new phone. Good communication and super fast postage too.

    • The code doesnt work for me? is this for Ebayplus only?

      • FZ15 must use zippay

    • Code doesn't work

    • +1

I was about to buy one from this seller but after reading all negative feedback, no way I would buy it from them.

  • I bought a "as new" iphone 12 from these guys in (
    The last deal.

It had 2 small marks on it (photos in the above link) , 80% battery life. It's been working as normal since receiving it..

  • Got the last one, i think, thanks OP!

  • +1

I would wait til they show up at Coles via Boost. Much easier returns.

Returns: 30-day returns. Buyer pays for return postage. See details- for more information about returns

  • iPhones. If Apple stops supporting them when they become old, do they essentially become paperweights that can't access / download new apps from the App store (locked out by Apple)?

This was my experience with my old iPod back in the days. Have they changed?

    • No. The phone just keeps working. App wise, that can happen when the app developer updates the app to only work with newer iOS versions and either the owner hadn’t updated the iOS or the phone is more than oh, 7 years or so and can’t run more recent iOS.

      • Oh, I mean yes, the phone should definiltey work, but are you locked out of the App Store by Apple… as in, you need to update the App Store to access it, but you can't update it because it's too old.

        • +1

From what I can see app store needs ios12 minimum which supports phones back to the 5s (released 2013)

    • +1

Eventually but it'll take a while. iPhone 12 should still have a few more years of iOS support and then a few more years after that before some apps stop working. Not bad for a phone this cheap

    • -> have a random thought a device is bad because of limited manufacturer support
-> declare it out loud in a suggestive question
-> admit it's actually about a completely different device
-> and it was ages ago; the last model was released over 5 years ago; and the previous - 9 years ago, when it was already being phased out.

So what greatly supported devices have you been using over the last years? I'd love to hear about the practices of other manufacturers. Let's talk phones :)

  • -1

Minimum 80% battery life, which means if you degrade the battery below 80% the phone will throttle performance, indexed by every % under 80%. This is bad as the 12mini is sluggish already in real worlds (source: we have one in our family right now). A genuine Apple battery replacement is $149.

Budget $470 for a fully functioning iPhone 12 Mini realistically if you plan to keep this for years to come.

    • -1

iPhones do not throttle performance based on battery %, they based it on power draw. It is all explained here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/101575

      • iPhone performance management works by looking at a combination of the device temperature, battery state of charge, and battery impedance. Only if these variables require it, iOS will dynamically manage the maximum performance of some system components, such as the CPU and GPU, in order to prevent unexpected shutdowns. As a result, the device workloads will self-balance, allowing a smoother distribution of system tasks, rather than larger, quick spikes of performance all at once. In some cases, you might not notice any differences in device performance. The level of perceived change depends on how much performance management is required for your device.

Performance is throttled based on indexed value, if you cared to even read the article. If the battery impedance increases due to chemical ageing, then its battery health is also calculated as lower. Therefore, as from the article you've quoted, if battery impedance increase, and battery health decreases, iOS will dynamically manage the events.

        How will iOS manage it?

In cases that require more extreme performance management, you might notice effects such as:
        Longer app launch times
        Lower frame rates while scrolling
Backlight dimming (which can be overridden in Control Center)
Lower speaker volume by up to -3dB
Gradual frame rate reductions in some apps
During the most extreme cases, the camera flash will be disabled as visible in the camera UI
Apps refreshing in background might require reloading upon launch

        • +1

You're mistaking what iPhone reports battery health % as, with, as the support article explains, "a battery’s ability to deliver maximum instantaneous performance, or “peak power”. They're related but not identical.

I'm not interested in relitigating arguments about this from six years ago. Apple lets you turn the mitigations/throttling off, the information is out there for users to choose whether they want to enable it or not.

    • +2

Yes I will replace the battery on my 13 mini when it drops to 80%. I want this form factor so prepared to pony up the battery replacement $.

  • +16

The bar for "refurbished" these days is so low… No new battery, so it's literally just, "we wiped the last guys greasy fingerprints off it… Mostly".

  • paid $459 for 12 (not mini) 128gb "as new" and "new battery" from this crowd using same code. should be arriving within the next couple of days

will report once I get it

    • +1

Similar, $450 with the previous 15% off deal. Battery health is 100%. The screen looks like it has tiny scratches on it if you hold it at an angle under light but it's not really noticeable. Pretty happy so far.

  • Is this seller real good?

    • +1

Yes, one of the more reputable refurb sellers on eBay

There's always a few cases of dud/definitely-not-refurbished phones thst are passed off, but that's with practically any refurb seller. In that case eBay will have your back

    • Can vouch for them. Have picked up an iPhone XS for my mum and and a 12 Mini for my wife. Both as described and with >95% battery life and delivered in a couple of days.

  • +1

    Coolio.. thanks mate

  • How does this compare to the iPhone SE 2016

  • +1

This is a good price for a refurbished Iphone mini. The only downside to this phone though is the battery, you might get 4-5 hours of usage on a typical day for someone that browses the web and makes phone calls.

  • Caveat emptor - bought the iPhone 12 mini and the model I got had the camera issue that seems to be widespread with this iPhone model: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255176973?sortBy=best

Have initiated for a replacement and asked that they check the camera before sending it. Would advise anyone who buy the phone to ask the same!

Seller however was responsive and even messaged me during King's Bday holiday so big plus. Also I've bought my S22U and 2 iPads (as bday presents) from this seller and they have also been good for me.

  • Bought this from my mum last year. Pathetic battery life. Thankfully, I got it for cheap, so was able to sell it a month later for no loss

  • Be careful. There are other country's stock. I ordered an iPhone 12 and it's Japanese stock.

    • The only negative being the shutter sound?

      • but you can use it as SUICA and PASMO in japan

        • You can use any iPhone 8 or later iPhone from any region for Suica/Pasmo; doesn't need to be a Japanese iPhone.
It was only the iPhone 7 generation that needed to be from Japan. From iPhone 8 onwards, any iPhone works for this.

Anyway, the max-volume shutter sound only happens if you're in Japan or South Korea. In Australia (and any country other than Japan or South Korea), once you connect a Japanese iPhone to a local mobile network, the shutter sound will adjust to whatever your volume setting is (or go quiet if your phone is set to silent), just like iPhones sold in Australia. (This is something that changed a few years back; once upon a time Japanese iPhones had the max-volume shutter sound no matter where you were, but after a particular iOS update, the behaviour was changed.)

The only real negative here is no ACL coverage directly from Apple, which doesn't matter as these are supposedly refurbished stock anyway. There's really no practical negative to Japanese stock unless you go on holiday to Japan :)

          • +1

@AL0126: I'd like to add that Apple will still service my Japanese iPhone according to their website (at my cost), and I can get a quote on battery replacement etc, they'll even accept it for trade-in towards a new phone. I was a little surprised to find this out, as I was expecting zero support, since the phone is pretty much grey market and 2nd hand.

          • @AL0126: "unless you go on holiday to Japan"

AND try to take some pictures that you really shouldn't XD

  • pixel 7 was $470 brand new at one stage

  • Can credit Green Gadgets return policy. Got a Pixel 7, didn't like it and was refunded as soon as they received it back. No fuss.

  • I bought an 'as new' iPhone 12 from this seller in January, phone is a Japanese model and approx. 3 years old, battery health is 84%, the rest of the phone was immaculate with no replacement parts.

The shutter sound can be silenced after you insert a local sim card, but it will still make a shutter and/or beep noise under certain conditions.

    • Live mode OFF, media volume up - shutter noise followed by a beep
    • Live mode ON, media volume up - beep only
    • Live mode ON or OFF, media volume at zero - no sound
    • Silent mode switch ON - no sound

I don't know if this is normal iPhone behavior, as I haven't compared it with another iPhone, also there doesn't appear to be a setting to toggle camera sound off in settings at all.

    • +1

That shutter sound behaviour is all normal. With the exception of the beeps at the end of the Live Photos, that’s how it works in iPhones from other regions, including Australia.

The beep at the end of a Live Photo on Japanese iPhones is the same sound effect you get when recording an actual video and you finish recording. It’s weird that it doesn’t disappear completely like non-Japan iPhones, but at least it goes quiet in silent mode.

Also just to be clear, inserting a local SIM card isn’t enough to change the shutter sound behaviour – it has to actually connect to a network outside Japan/South Korea for it to happen. People with Japan-market SIM cards and Japan iPhones roaming on a network outside Japan also get the shutter sound silenced once they connect to the network. You couldn’t put in a deactivated SIM card to silence the shutter sound because of this – it’s about connecting to a network ultimately.
(And if you go on holiday to Japan and roam there with an Australian SIM card, shutter sound will go back to max volume.)

      • Thanks for the info, I had a feeling the beep was a Japanese iPhone thing.

  • just got mine, couple of minor blemishes and light scratches, but won't be noticable day to day, 90% battery as well. so happy with it. Thanks OP
