Average ozbargainer buys cars. How’s that hard to grasp? You’d make more sense if it was a deal on a private jet.
Ps: you can hide car deals. Go do that and stop being an attention whore

      • Wow someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed

        • +1

Was actually watching the tennis until early morning so only had a couple of hours of sleep.. woke up on the wrong side of the bed on top of that!

      • +2

I am average ozb but i don't buy cars coz i cant afford them

        • +11

Sorry to break it to you, you are slightly below average.

  • I'm considering buying the Cannon Ute soon, does anyone here own one and can tell me the pros and cons of the vehicle?

    • Doesn't sound great to be honest…
      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/924685j6

      • +4

That's a discussion about the Alpha variant. Unsure what version Lizard spock is referring to but that may not be it.

    • +2
      • Yeah if you can believe this bs

It easily beats out every other stock vehicle in
Australia when it comes to off roading.
It's basically the only vehicle you off road with

      • +3

GWM Ute has one of the worst ground clearance of any mainstream utes.

Also, fuel economy is terrible for even a weak 2L engine. Even Utes with more powerful 3L engines have better fuel economy.

        • -2

          Also gets stuck on speedbumps

        • Normal cannon has the worst, the xsr tops it up to 230 so extra 50 which make it better than a lot of others but obviously not the best.

That's the only thing i dont like about the XSR, they made it for off roading yet didn't lift the vehicle higher.

The fuel economy is better than my jeep which isnt saying much.

          • +1

@michael9865: $60K Nissan Navara SL Warrior is way better factory off-roader than GWM Cannon-XSR. Heaps more ground clearance, way better approach angle, more powerful & fuel efficient engine and most importantly, better resale value. Off-roading is not just about front diff lockers.

            • -1

@dealhunter52: yeah warrior engine is 20kw (50nm) more powerful, torque 1500 which is the same as xsr. Yeah has 30mm more ground clearance.
XSR has a better departure angle. The Approach angle, needs to be calculated but I believe it was around 35 about the same as the warrior.

Nissan will be good to look at, it does have a few things missing like front diff lock, snorkel, bash plates front to back (warrior looks to have the front part covered only which is common for most).

None the less though, when it comes to stock I would trust the xsr to go where the warrior can't (based on the snorkel as Warrior will drown first and the front diff lock). But that is stock version only, obviously if modding up then warrior would be better.

              • @michael9865: Not only is SL Warrior has more torque and better fuel economy, its faster, it can tow more and has bigger payload capacity. Comes with factory bullbar with integrated LED lights and has room for winch. It has independent rear suspension compared to leaf spring suspension in XSR. Has 20,000Km service intervals compared to 10,000km for XSR. Whole suspension is developed and tuned by Melbourne based engineering company Premcar and has excellent reviews.

        • -1

Sounds like a plus to me, lower ground clearance = better handling.

      • +5

Man… I don't understand that thread. So OP has done $20k worth of damage to his 'best for off roading' GWM in just 6 months of ownership. And apparently that is not worth making an insurance claim for?
That is like 50% of the purchase price. In what world is that not worth claiming!

        • +1

Haha and he wants to bet $20k he can beat any other 4wd on a particular track

        • Because it still functions.
I can just get a sledge hammer and bang it back into place.

There is nothing serious that will stop the car from doing more tracks.

          • @michael9865: Okay so your logic is buy a cheaper 4wd to save money, yet it's not worth claiming insurance on $20k worth of damage?

You'd rather sledge hammer it back in place, really?

            • @Mikinoz: Yep, if it works why fix it.
I got it to smash it not have it in my garage.
By the time i am through with it, half the car would probably be missing😂.
But don't worry i am planning to get another XSR after as they are that good.

If I'm fonna off road, I'm gonna off road hard especially with this vehicle as it doesn't hurt me to lose 50k but it will hurt me if i lose 100k+ on getting a car like Ram, landcruiser, etc

It's all about having fun in life

              • +1

                @michael9865: Then why have insurance?

                • @Mikinoz: In case i run you over🤣
Lol, should be obvious, kinda stupid not to have insurance

                  • @michael9865: Okay so using your logic, kinda stupid not claiming insurance when you damage the car?

I mean you did a post on how to claim insurance after damaging it 4wding. So what was the point?

                    • @Mikinoz: The post was just to ascertain if damage caused by pulling someone out is covered as it had me curious.

At that time i was onpy planning to claim if it had safety issues but then i got it looked at and found there is nothing to be concerned about.

The premium i would have to pay by making a claim would double so to me not worth it for a car that still works perfectly.

                  • @michael9865: CTP will cover you for that. Why pay any extra?

                • +1

@Mikinoz: in case you get stuck on a rock and another 4WD has to drag your vehicle off.

    • +5

Mate has one, good value. Lot of mods and accessories available.

    • +6

I have the L model and I can't fault it. Have done 10000KM so far and it's been great.

    • +7

There's some pros and cons. But you get what you paid for. Good value to money. There are accessories available to make it better. Not like some T brand these days make you pay more than the car worth using hunger marketing.

    • +1

Depends on your use case really, if no offroading, then they are average, obviously good value for money but would rather buy something better second hand for same money.

For off roading xsr is your best bet, the new alpha models are not good enough.

      • Yeah xsr if you like getting stuck and you're okay with getting 20k worth of damage getting unbogged and hitting a tree

        • +1

Literally i don't get why you hate me so much.

          • +1

@michael9865: I don't hate you, but your logic is questionable and you seem like a fun person to be around

            • @Mikinoz: Thanks, for clearing that up, am i am happy to discuss my logic as i can be wrong.

I do know that some of the comments i made werent clear in my post which would have questioned people like the fact that i said it was better than any other 4wd. I forgot to add parameters to that comment.
Sometimes i just write quickly and forget to include everything.

    • +4

Seems to be a lot of people commenting about it that don't own one. I was given one brand new in 2022 as a work car and drove 30,000km in that year before i left the role. The cannon L.
      Pros
Nice interior, electric seats, great cameras (360 degree is really needed), a lot of stuff comes standard that doesn't come on the more expensive cars don't have like side steps etc. I got about 700km to a tank doing mainly highway driving. I found it pretty powerful, saying that I didn't tow anything or had never driven another Ute like that before.

      Cons
It's massive, hard to park in city areas, seats aren't super comfortable (no lumbar support). Big turning circle, really tall and high driving position. I didn't off road it at all. The servicing at essendon Renault was disgraceful so I went elsewhere.

My boss had the cannon x and the only difference was the lcd screen for the speedometers, wireless charging and a different interior which was nice but not very different from the L.

For the price it's hard to beat. Especially if it's a work car.

      • Thank you for your very helpful reply. This is kind of information I was looking for, a comment especially from someone who has the vehicle.

    • -2

Get a Triton. Drove one that my work had, worst car I've ever driven hands down.

    • +1

I own an LDV D90 and tbh the spec sheets shit all over the japanese counterparts, reliability has been fine as well.

If you can get past the ChInA BaD narrative there's actually a decent car under there. It won't set the world alight with regards to performance but you'd struggly to get something similarly equipped for the money.

Honestly i think the spartan Ranger, Navara or Hilux is really only surviving off fleet buyers and cashed up FiFO workers. If you don't have an ABN the GWM would be my pick followed by the T60 max

    • I bought the steed as a dealer demo (50km on it) in 2018 and it's going fine. Service schedule is a bit excessive though

      • The price is excessive or the frequency?

        • +1

          Frequency of fluid changes

    • -2

pros and cons of the vehicle

Pros: you don’t have to buy it.
      Cons: GWM

    • 30,000km on my '22 Cannon X. Came from a 2014 Triton GLXR with 180,000km. Had reservations about GWM, but just couldn't justify spending almost double what I did on 2014 Triton for the latest one.

X a better ride, Triton has no tech in comparison, fuel economy better, interior is 100 times nicer.

Other than the DPF and the awful sound system, it's been pretty solid. The safety tech took some getting used to. Has seen plenty of corrugations and mud. No rust, no panel or paint damage.

If I could change one thing about it, it'd be the DPF. Ute will tell you when it's doing a burn (about twice per tank), but if you interrupt it 3 times in a row, which will happen if your average commute time is <30 mins, the thing will go into limp home mode until you've done a manual burn. Manual burn takes about 20 mins of the car sitting idle and revving its tatas off.

  • GWM Haval Ute $1,000, plus Factory Bonus @ GWM Haval

    • The bonus is the build quality and resale value

      /Sarcasm

  • -3

Thank you China. For paid my Centrelink and Medicare.

  • +2

Work mate bought a 23 model, don't buy them. Awful electrical systems, turbo dead after 30,000km, cheap plastic interior, buy a better Ute.

    • +1

At least it comes with 7 years up to 150,000 KM warranty, that happened to work mates Nissan, warranty wasnt that long.

    • +2

Ah yes, better Utes, such as the Hiluxes that are prone to DPF failures or the D4 engines which would grenade themselves or the Rangers with automatic transmissions that will self combust…

      • Triton is where it's at, best value & generally have decent reliability.

        • I have seen a new diesel Triton with injector-related issues, it's okay to have issues in a new car but the problem is when the dealer cannot fix it promptly or when reoccurring issues.

  • +2

    $ 1,000 factory bonus

    • had the cannon x over 2 years

So why dont you have it anymore bob?

      • i still have it sorry, should have written that better. im honestly considering getting the new alpha or tank 500. ive enjoyed it that much.

  • +1

I’ve driven two Haval’s through hire cars for work and I must say they are among the worst of cars I’ve ever driven.

If this model comes stock with their driver attention camera and ‘features’ I’d strongly recommend you test drive as if you were looking for something like a shop or address on the side of the road or change a radio station. The period it allows you to avert your attention is so way too short and overbearing for normal driving. It then keeps beeping at you until you stare back on the road but the ability for the camera to pick this up takes a good 3-5 seconds and as such will continue beeping.

A pop up also appears on the display so if you were actually trying to change a radio or pick a song or put in a destination whilst the car is in motion that now becomes blocked by a stupid ‘are you paying attention’ ‘yes/no’ that doesn’t even matter what you select anyway.

Edit: might only be on the SUV Jolion but seems I’m not the only one with gripes about it being overbearing. I also experienced the sunglasses problem on the previous hire but not this one so maybe they updated software.

    • +5

All the new vehicles have these annoying system. They are part of the ANCAP safety rating

      • I don't believe the 'driver attention camera' is even in this vehicle

        • Yeah I did make an edit to say I don’t think it’s in this vehicle but it’s very much put me off Haval.

    • +2

Turn it off? It's an annoying feature, but you can turn it off in about 20 seconds and it stays off for good. The features the Jolion has for sub $35k would cost you $60k in a Hyundai or 'good' brand of car. The 360 cameras are amazing for the car they come in and they actually drive pretty nicely imo.

I'd be interested to hear what else happened that made it 'among the worst of cars' you've ever driven besides the driver attention beeping at you…

The 'are you paying attention' comes up if you scroll a lot on the screen while driving, but it happens so infrequently that I'd be concerned you weren't actually paying attention if it happened enough to annoy you.

      • We recently purchased Haval H6 hybrid ultra and I feel I got good bang for the buck with the car. Full of features and ha premium feeling interiors too. Can’t fault until now

        • +1

Agreed - It's a comfortable car to drive with the features

      • No USB C ports anywhere.

Tyre blew on the highway - not the car’s fault but they use wheel bolts not nuts to secure the wheel. The wheel was rusted stuck between the wheel and hub that required about 10 minutes of rocking back and forth to get it to unstick. This was on a car with 15,000km and a 2023 model. No full size spare either on a car that size.

Audio was average, very tinny sounding.

Cruise control increment was in 5km/h only unless you specifically cancelled and set it at an intermediate speed.

Driver awareness, yes you can turn it off sure… but it defaults to back on as soon as you exit the vehicle. There’s no way I’d want to spend 20 seconds doing that every time I wanted to drive.

The engine was not smooth at all in sports mode (which is what it was defaulted on when I received it as a hire car). Only way to change the modes is in the display, no physical button. Once I changed it into comfort it was much better but the sport was horrible. Just hung onto gears way too much.

The climate control was absolutely stupid AF. Instead of using an ACTUAL temperature, it just uses a value between 1 and 20 or something along those lines. 1 being full cold and 20 being full hot. That’s all well and good for a car you own and drive every day, but a hire car? Just give me the numbers.

The displays for night driving were still way too bright even when dimmed all the way down to the minimum brightness.

At the end of the day this is all my own personal opinion but I will never own one based on my previous two experiences with the cars.

        • Obviously you're entitled to your opinion, but I think you might have driven an older model as most of the things you talk about don't exist.

Drive awareness you 100% don't have to change every time. You turn it off and that's it - I haven't touched mine since the dealer turned it off when I picked it up new

The drive mode is so simple to just select at the start and forget. Haven't changed this since I got it either.

Climate control is 100% in degrees celcius dual zone, no random number system

Display in night mode is great, possibly that changed too?

All in all, sounds like your opinion is based on something from an older car that maybe isn't fully accurate anymore, but you're obviously entitled to boycott a car without justifying to a random on the internet.

I would make the argument that Hyundai and other manufacturers probably had a similar sentiment when they tried to start making better cars.

    • All vehicles are bringing this in thanks to the lovely people at ANCAP

  • +2

A mate that is well into car enthusiast territory (12 car garage ++) has the Cannon as a daily driver and is happy enough with it. He religiously services his vehicles and it does not see any heavy off road. As for comparing it to a Hilux etc, I had the current Rogue and it was overpriced for the quality. The current Wildtrak drives better than both.

  • +2

In this day of age who can afford 100K ute when you can get half the price with close similar spec. No wonder all the Japanese and American cars sales are falling sharply.

    • +2

someone with a frail ego and a line of credit?

      • +1

        look around you

there's HEAPS of folks who have ranger raptors, everest, trd hilux and the ram1500 silverado abominations

problem is now $50k buys you a white council spec ute

        • +1

person at work (pure office work) bought a ford ranger. single person with no kids at home. he complains about the cost of filling it up. also complains that it is a super tight fit into his garage. they don't need a ranger at all, literally no reason. they have a back issue so they will never need to haul a mountain bike or a canoe, nor would they ever need it for hauling building materials (two left thumbs)..

they just go it because they want it.

which on one hand is far enough, but on the other hand - buy something that matches your lifestyle (and budget -this person lives paycheck to paycheck).

if you want to drive a ranger then go rent one for a week, get it out of your system and buy something that practicable.

        • That's a good description of Greenacre now. Every second man, woman and p plater is driving an overpowered Ute that doesn't meet their lifestyle.

They just buy them to show off they are driving a big car

  • At least it will hold it's value than a Telsa over the years.

    • -1

Sure, it will hold, but only after it tanks to 5k after year 1.

      • +7

You're telling me I can get a 1 year old ute with 6 years left on warranty for $5k?
The real deal is always in the comments! Please post a link.

      • +2

Please post link, need to buy more to thrash, can probably buy 10 right now in cash if 5k each

  • +1

My relative got canon x for 2 years, he love it much over the previous Hilux. Light use for daily construction works, never has problem, the interior are heap better than Hilux, including look and quality.

  • +3

GWM brand is actually the only Chinese car brand I would buy in Aus. It's the most 'grown up'. I see them everywhere in the North Shore area in Sydney and last year a family member bought 1. It's a Hybrid. Bloody nice car and feels solid. Very fast too. The interior is so nice and you would think it's from a $100k BMW compared to the plastic fantastic Toyota's. The self driving feature is a bit hit or miss and that's the only thing that is shit about it and it get's turned off on every drive. Also see a lot of Ubers / Taxis using them so it has to have had a good reputation for reliability overseas for them to even consider them. Anything the Taxi industry uses get's the default reliability tick of approval like we assume for Camry's and Rav 4's. Now Toyota has a heritage and hard earned reputation for reliability and thus the resale value will be much higher but GWM…..well done, nice play with the new models post 2020. Keep getting better.

    • -1

Watch out, you'll be criticized for liking a chinese brand car on here! They Havals are great value for money if you want a feature rich car for an affordable price. Everyone tells you to buy a Hyundair or Toyota, but if you want a HUD or good 360 cameras, good luck paying less than $60k
