Best Quality TV on Limited Budget

My wife and I recently returned to Oz and are moving into a new apartment this week, however our house contents will not arrive until September at earliest.

We need a TV which will be our main TV during that time but will be our spare room TV once our current one arrives.

I have a max budget of 500 (would prefer 300)
and would prefer new as I like a warranty. What is the best deal I can get on a TV between 40 and 50 inches that I could take delivery of by end of week?

Id love 4k but I'd rather an ok 1080p than a crap 4k.

I have been looking at TCL, hisense etc but finding it hard to find a good bargain as opposed to just cheap

  • Bargain when e.g: $1000 Tv becomes $500, but you be waiting for while based on your budget.

Otherwise something like TCL 43" P745 4K Ultra HD LED Google TV or perhaps second hand.

At the low end you really need to view models on display. I took a friend shopping around the $300 mark and its different shades of awful, whatever your eyeballs can tolerate.

  • At that budget all you can look at is cheap or 2nd hand. Tcl or tvs from aldi is propably your best bet.

head into your nearest ALDI store and you may find something like what you want or they may have none.

Im pretty keen to find something online that delivers as I have 101 other things to sort out this week

    • Maybe a good screen, but generally cheap tvs are slow when using the remote, and frustrating. I have a bauhn 42 in if you want one cheap. I replaced it with tcl.

  • not sure why everyone is so down on tcl. was the first brand name tv i have bought and its really good. so much better than the palsonic and dick smith brand tellys i have previously had.

not sure why everyone is so down on tcl.

I've had mine for 4 years, and it's great… Mind you I watch via my NVidia shield, but the picture quality and sound on the TCL is very good…

    • I wont be buying another TCL i bought it 6 years ago and as a plain tv fine but as a smart tv most functions dont work, app not available or erratic.

  • Sony Ebay has a few 32 inches fo 500 posted

I appreciate the suggestion but thats a bit too small

    • FB market place would be better, I have a 32" Sony 1080p IPS early smart TV which I got for $70 couple of years ago

  • I'm watching a really old 1080p TV right now and the picture is actually quite nice. It generates a huge amount of heat though.

Panasonic Plasma? Perfect for winter nights 😅

      • Depends on your rate. A fan heater might be cheaper to run.

    hard rubbish

  • I bought a Kogan QLED 50" for my mom and pretty happy with it. A little slow in the menu but its ok. About to buy a 70" for myself.

    • I am tempted. I worry about quality though.

Do you know what the brightness number is in nits?

      • Found it. 300. Hmm, I am tempted but its a Kogan so it is a risk

    • Yes I did unfortunately

  • I'd be leery of TCL. Back when I had cataracts, I thought I'd got a bargain 65" TCL for $1k. But when the cataracts were fixed, OMG, it was horrible. I was sitting up quite close to get the full big screen effect, and it was rough as guts. Had to move the couch back, but if you were a football fan you'd have no fun as Nine's football telecasts are all hairy and weird.

Can't wait to get rid of it, it's OK if you are a fair distance from it.

    • Thats good context thanks, but I have seen some pretty nice TCL screens in person. Maybe you got a poor one unfortunately

  • I settled on a TCL C645 43 inch that I picked up for 499

How's that TCL going? How is the sound quality? A mini review would be great!

  • After a few days my thoughts on the TCL c645 are as follows

-picture quality is fantastic. It easily beats my old samsung ru7100 in SD and 4k (though that's not hard)

-sound quality is pretty poor. I struggle to make out the words sometimes. May need to adjust settings

Menu input lag is an issue.

Overall I'm reasonably happy. I can put up with the issues for a couple of months until my other gear arrives
