All good, the magic elves got to it. Thanks!

would i be banned if I call them dwarves?

        • wait, are you suggesting jv is one of the elves and dwarves?!

These are good, they also report light levels, and integrate with home assistant!
and are fairly well sealed so work well outside undercover also

    • +2

      And temps!

      • This looks pretty impressive. It is more expensive than aqara units but looks like it has 3 sensors built in one and takes AAA as well. Compelling for $41.

        • I use home assistant with these. I switched most of my motion sensors to these instead of aqara. They’re a lot more reliable and the time out is only 10 seconds instead of 2 minutes so my lights turn off faster when I go to another room.

        • +1

          Wish it did humidity too!

And the battery lasts years, unlike my Ikea sensors.

The switch is great too. I prefer to associate each button with a scene, rather than up/down dimming.

      • Yea have one in the stairs, which is in is 5th year

    Thanks OP.

Is it only compatible with philips bulbs/lights etc?

If not what other brand can be used pls.

    • I'd like to know this as well

      • It needs a Phillips hub but then it can trigger a range of devices. I just have two simple routines set up in Alexa to turn on a light when motion detected and turn off when no motion detected for 30 sec.

The bulb for my use case just needs to be seen by Alexa (ie have an Alexa skill for that brand).

it's ZIGBEE….can be used with any ZIGBEE system, I'm using mine with Home Assistant!

        Oooohh!!!

        • +1

          oh the ZigBee

I use Home Assistant and can also use the sensors (light, motion, temperature) to trigger automations that can include other devices from anything supported by that. For example, I have a zwave door sensor from Fibaro on the pantry door, along with one of these Philips motion sensors inside the pantry itself. If the door opens or the motion sensor detects motion, then my automation turns the Tuya based light on. If the door closes or no motion is detected after 10 mins then the light is turned off. I have a similar setup in the laundry, but because it has a large window I have also set the automation so that the lights only turn on if the ambient light is below a set lux level. Assume would also be able to do the same in other systems such as Apple homekit etc, but I like Home Assistant.

FWIW I like the mounting options with this sensor - you can stick the base plate on the wall, and the sensor itself sticks to the plate with a magnet so it's super easy to remove to replace the battery (which lasts really well, by the way). The sensor I have in the laundry just sticks straight onto the wall mounted dryer using the magnet.

  • What do you use this for?

    • +17

      Sensing motion

      • -1

        Read it as sexy motion

        • You say that, but I know someone with a occupancy sensor under their mattress.

    • +2

Getting angry at the cat when he sneaks around the house at night and the lights come on

    • I have a very dark hallway with no natural light - so this triggers the light as soon as anyone starts walking down the hallway (works great!). And yep, like 2025 said above… the damn cat triggers it throughout the night.

I also have one outside mounted right above the front door (under the porch, well protected from the rain), so the porch light automatically turns on whenever anyone walks up to the front door.

Has a handy temperature sensor that only shows up in HomeKit too. Ask Siri what the temperature is in that room and she’ll tell you.

  • not sure if we should wait for Prime Day coming up

  • Can people owning this advise on

    1. Battery life?
    2. Can you simply setup in good assistant without any need for hub etc. I mean no extra hardware required other than Hue app or Google assistant app.
    3. So it has its own small light. Can it be used to trigger another light in google assistant?
    4. Can you stick to wall with adhesive strips?
    • +2
      1. No
      2. Not sure. Mine still going strong after 5 years of frequent triggers.
      3. Google Assistant? Not sure I have a hub and the Phillips App linked to GA.
      4. No built in light. Yes, with routines.
      5. Yes, mine is stuck on with 3M frame strips.

      1. Good
      2. Need zigbee coordinator
      3. wut, yes
      4. nailgun or inbuilt magnet
    • +1
      1. No.
      2. Years (I haven't changed mine in the last 3 years despite the sensor being in a very busy space).
      3. No.
      4. Any other hue light-yes. Compatibilty with other lights- can't tell as I have not tried it.)
      5. Yes.
    • +1
      1. The first one I bought over a year ago is still running on the original battery, and that's in my pantry so it is activated a lot
      2. I assume you mean Home Assistant - either way you need either the Hue bridge or a zigbee gateway
      3. It has no light, but a light sensor ie it can detect how bright or dark a room is. Yes any of the sensors (light, temperature, movement) can be used to trigger automations such as turning on/off a light.
      4. Yes. Personally I'd stick the mount to the wall with the strips, then you can easily take the sensor down if/when you need to replace the battery, as well as be able to adjust the angle of the sensor. Note that as the sensor has a magnet, you could also stick a small metal plate onto the wall, and the sensor would attach to that.

      1. Battery lasted 2 years in a high traffic area and using rechargeable AAA batteries
      2. I don't think it's possible to connect to Google assistant without the hub.
      3. It doesn't have a light, it is just a motion sensor which is used to activate any Zigbee compatible bulbs connected on the same hub.
      4. You can stick it to the wall with adhesive strips if you like. Otherwise screw the attachment it comes with to the wall.

Brilliant responses. Thank you very much guys. I guess suitable for people having the hub already. I will search for one that can be used standalone with Google assistant.

        • +1

You will not find one standalone unit that satisfies the battery criteria because the only current technology allowing that feature is wifi and it will need a huge battery pack to ensure you don't have to swap out every few weeks. Ble may fit the criteria but you will end up with a phone being defacto hub anyway and range is not that great.

    • +3

For #4, I use the built-in magnet. A lot of houses have metal edging in their walls (for the corners), so it'll stick to that safely.

  • So recommended for Home Assistant for automatically turning on lights? Are the automations easy?

    • Yes, extremely easy, you can download various automation blueprints which make it a breeze to configure. Home Assistant is not difficult to setup as long as you are willing to tinker.

[Edit] Some muppets downvoting legit questions in this thread, smh.

      • +1

Thanks. No idea why the downvotes. I have a few basic automations but nothing with more complex logic.

  • Thanks Op. Bought one.

  • I'm confused reading the comments as I'm new to this. Do I need to buy a separate hub for this to work or can it work with Home Assistant?

    • +2

You'd need a compatible Zigbee hub or dongle.

For the dongle, you'd set it up with ZHA or Zigbee2mqtt.
For a hub, you'd use it's integration in Home Assistant. (Assuming it even has one, and it isn't terrible.)

Note that Zigbee is a mesh protocol, so permanently powered Zigbee devices like lightbulbs, smart plugs etc. can extend the overall range of your network.

  • Does this integrate with Eero as the gateway/hub to work out need a proper one?

  • +5

I ended up using open source https://konnected.io/ on an esp32 to convert my existing home alarm motion sensors into connected sensors on home assistant. Works great for automation of lights. And I never used the alarm anyway. Now I can automate lights and get motion alerts to my phone when no one is home. Cost about $10.

Thought it was worth mentioning for others that have an alarm system in their house collecting dust.
