  • Thanks OP

  • The Command Line book is for Linux rather than, as I was hoping, for Windows. Windows has the Terminal (sort of successor to DOS) + PowerShell, and there are also Batch files, but I struggle just to form a command to get a Command Line program to apply a certain operation with multiple arguments to an entire directory of files with a certain extension. I'm a GUI guy, a hobbyist with no training in coding (at high school there was just some quick typing training and a few sessions in BASIC; this was quite a long time ago).

Apparently you can get Linux Bash by installing something called Windows Subsystem for Linux, but I suspect only a tiny sliver of Windows users worldwide have this installed. There are also several enhanced Command Line programs available in Windows, some free, some payware. I downloaded some but haven't tested them yet to find which one would best suit the needs of a neophyte who struggles with a Command line environment.

    • You might be best off firing up PowerShell ISE and using that to create your script. Using an AI perhaps like perplexity.ai might help - ask it to write you a PowerShell script to do what you want. It gives a good explanation of what the script will do so you can learn from it.
