wish it was an OLED screen

    • +13

The FE is Samsung "budget' range.

If you want a Samsung Tablet with OLED, you'll have to get their flagship Tab S9 Range.

      • +2

        S5E RIP

Technically FE = Fan Edition, but yes at the budget end / market

        • +2

Yes the S5e was the last decent Samsung mid range offered device. It was obviously too good for the money, so Samsung pushed consumers up to the flagships for oled.

    • +6

I'd be happy if they just didn't put that e-waste cpu in it.

  • +4

Needs to be sub $400 to be a deal. Slower chipset than ipad 5 mini and ipad 8th gen.

    • +1

      well he is not wrong.

    • +14

But not an iPad. So infinitely better

      • +3

whats wrong with ipads? im an android phone user but i will only get ipads for tablets. their quality is top notch.

        • +2

I'm the opposite. Running an iPhone and Samsung tablet because I can sideload movie streaming apps and ad-free YouTube, which is 90% of what I use my tablet for.

          • @blokeslim: Sideload movie streaming apps? Why the need for side load?

Ad free youtube on iOS is available with adblocker and using safari or chrome.

            • @mrvaluepack: If you are using things like stremio, it is not available for ios even through a browser. It is possible, but you need to jump through many hoops.
While I do agree that ipads are good, it is a fact that they are less versatile when it comes to things like this. Really depends on the user and what you're looking for.
But yeah, youtube can be easily watched ad free on an ipad.

              • +1

@JerryBeansMan: This is incorrect information. You can access Stremio through the web. I do this on my iPad all the time. And There’s no real hoops to jump through.

Android tablets have advantages though. Especially for media consumption, since usually their aspect ratio is better for it and you can get a nice oled screen cheaper. Modded apks and emulation of old game systems like GameCube is easier on Android.

              • @JerryBeansMan: Stremio works for me on iPhone and iPad. I think I followed this guide https://blog.stremio.com/using-stremio-web-on-iphone-ipad/
It opens things in VLC which works quite well

Strong disagree. I have an iPad Mini 5th gen and this S9 FE, and despite Apple's more performant CPUs, the real world usability is night and day. The iPad is so sluggish it has become the most disappointing Apple device I've ever owned. The longevity I've had from every other Apple product has been fantastic, but this particular iPad struggles with doing anything day to day, yet it was great at time of release. One of the iOS updates killed it, and if I had to timeline it I'd guess it was around the late 2021 update when I went from "I love this thing" to "why is this thing so damn slow?!"

TL;DR this is far more useful than an iPad Mini 5, despite specs

      • I have the mini 5 as well and i dont know what apps you are running but mine is still buttery smooth even after all the updates and same performance like i just bought it 4 years ago.

        • +1

Primarily used for web browsing, YouTube, Netflix and Kindle. Video is fine but web browsing is horrendous.

    • +3

You forgot to factor in the extra $150 for a pen for the iPads to compare with the included S pen. The processor is enough for the use cases people buy these for. No one is going to game or run complex photo applications on these.

      • +2

I have zero interest in a pen so it coming with one means nothing, they wont be giving it away for free, for those that get the iPad without a pen that dont want one the pen means nothing

        • +2

a lenovo is a good option for you

          • +1

@shxhshzhz: Returned the Lenovo P11, lack of updates and support is a negative. I’d stick with the Samsung for that alone.

  • do these come with the pen?

  • +1

Have one for youtube watching. It's decent. Comes with a pen. Negatives are slow charging and the screen isn't OLED. otherwise, it's not bad.

    • Specs say 45w charging? Shouldn't be slow?

    • +7

45 watt charging requires you to own a fast charger that supports QC protocol.

And I just realized, the tablet doesn't even come with a charger, it just comes with a cable that supports 45watt charging. Stingy samsung.

      • To be fair, most people already own a charger. You know, the environment and such…

      • Oh cheers, perhaps I'm using the wrong charger. Could have sworn I've tried a few different ones at home.

  • What tablet is a good price point for watching YouTube videos?

  • We need a great price on the S9 Ultra!

  • Decent deal but it's slow. I've used one and given how heavy One UI can be, I've found it stutters. My flagship Tab S9 is, however, blazing fast as it should be with the SD 8 Gen 2 and the 1440p OLED is 😍😍.

  • -4

I tried current gen FEs at the Samsung shop in Highpoint (shout out to hot female asian attendant)

They were often stuttering while browsing
    It’s ridiculous in 2024, I couldn’t believe it.

My son’s iPad Pro from 2018 runs flawlessly
    6 years…

I was also skeptical of the CPU and it does indeed feel slower overall than my aging galaxy s21 ultra. But I'm not gonna lie, I came from the ipad 8th gen to the Galaxy s9+ fe that I got a massive discount at launch (Samsung's stackable discounts are amazing), I paid about 400 for the galaxy tab s9+ FE at launch. The screen is incredible, I feel the pen is MILES better than the apple pencil 1st gen and on par/slightly better than the 2nd gen minus Bluetooth functions. Sound is incredible and spacial, Samsung has some magic under the hood for this. The screen is better than the OG Ipad and the performance tend to improve with use. It was disappointingly sluggish right out of the box but after updating and a few days of use it got much better. I can even do some gaming in it like call of duty, pubg and hollow knight. I also plug in the xbox controller to play cloud gaming and the screen is much nicer than the average laptop. Can recommend if you need a tablet. This is NOT the tablet for editing multiple channels of 4k videos, but I have no issues editing large 42mp raw files on Lightroom or light video editing with apps like the Gopro Quik or Premiere Rush.

Tl;de - Nice tablet overall, amazing screen and sound, not the fastest you can buy definitely more than enough for the basics and some extras like light gaming

Thanks for providing real life evidence of the performance and not just seeing the word "Exynos" and going crazy

    • What's the difference between S9 and S9+?

      • The Plus versions of the tablet is larger. And the minimum RAM configuration starts at 12GB and min storage is 256GB.

More RAM, More storage, bigger display and battery. That's mostly it.

        • Thank you. I guess its not really comparing apples with apples with twice as much ram. So not sure if the positive experience of @martinezjpo is a true reflection of the S9 FE?

          • +1

@nudy: scrimshaw is talking about the flagship s9 and s9+ tablets, not the FE ones. For the FE and FE+, the difference in RAM is only 2GB (6GB and 8GB). The flagship models are more powerful devices at higher prices.

  • Does it support AptX codec?
