An additional 7 hours in Economy to save $100 over a direct flight even with Qantas, doesnt seem like a deal to me.

      Some people like a stopover.

You could put up an argument that many of us wanted a HK stopover years ago, much less so in 2024. Haven't looked at the HK tourism numbers but assume they have been in freefall.

        • curious why dont ppl wanna go there now…

@homersyd: Partially cos its expensive as hell now, and also political shit

          • +2

@homersyd: People have been really affected by the political unrest. To be fair, even the old HK leaders have all fallen in line once China tightened the screws. I can only speak for people I know but heaps of friends and family went to Hong Kong frequently and would never go back now. I think there is a mostly unwarranted feeling that if you as much as jaywalk, you might find yourself in a Chinese concentration camp. A huge exaggeration but people generally don't feel as safe there anymore. I know I've been to Hong Kong probably 8 times, I have no plans to ever return. No point after the BS as their are 1000 cities I'd rather visit.

            • @seamonkey: The democracy leaders have not fallen in line. They have mostly been jailed and silenced.

            • @seamonkey: If you don't hold a HK ID or look Southern Chinese I think you're fine. They won't want anything to do with you.

              • @ippy: I understand and I don't have such a look, but even that in itself accurately explains the type of country I no longer wish to visit. I'm old and been to so many places around the planet that these days I can afford to be pretty choosy who I'll give my tourist dollars to. 🙂

                • @seamonkey: Fair enough, I'm glad to see people that care. I myself fit my criteria and unfortunately have no plans to visit in the near future. China included. It is sad, I've always had a good time in both.

Stupid question but for flights like these, can you ‘get off’ at Hongkong?…

    • According to the 2nd bullet point - yes

      • Just figuring out how to pull it off, if MEL-HKG it's 1100+, but if its MEL-MNL it's 800 return. I'm just looking to get to Hong Kong, is it a good idea to get of HKG and not got to Manila. Will I get my bagage?

    • Get off the plane or have a stopover in HK or you are not going to Manila?
