Under $400 for a cocktail time is a good price… especially after all this inflation nonsense!

  • +3

this is so tempting… must resist!!

    • +6

It shows not so accurate time in a shiny case, nothing more… Won't even show the day…. Cost as much as a decent smart watch…. The happiness of buying is short lived when you have to justify it to your not so better half…. You will get a big credit card bill next time which you will struggle to pay off…. Your colleagues and friends don't talk about automatics anymore..

Some thoughts that I use to resist

      • +3

But it's my favourite colour (hello Afterpay).

        • +5

Sadly that is the thought that finally wins.. hello paypal pay in 4 :)

        • And it’s good for the economy !*

(May not be good for the economy)

      • +3

Nobody really needs a mechanical watch these days. You're buying this mostly for the dial, but damn is that a gorgeous dial for under $400.

        • +4

One could also say nobody needs a smart watch, I know plenty of people that don't, including me, although I used to have one, I just don't like the look of them (in my 30's).
Many people prefer a real watch still for classic styling and are collectors items, a piece of fashionable jewellery that makes a statement.

          • @SimAus007: I find smart watches to be too bulky, I just wear a Xiaomi Mi Band fitness band which tells you the time. Costs around $50 on AliExpress and then I bought a bulk pack of different coloured bands for it, fun to change them up to compliment your shirt colour.

Sometimes I forget to take it off the charger and it makes a big difference going a day without it, get so used to being able to quickly check the time and date. Pulling out my phone to check the time feels so antiquated. I guess it's the watch vs pocketwatch debate all over again haha

      • +7

On the other hand, I have 20 year old automatic watches that still work well, even without servicing.

I doubt my Apple Watch will still be useful in 20 years.

        • +1

At this price, over 20 years, that’s 36c per week, how can anyone say no?

      • If you’re putting a $400 purchase onto a credit card you shouldn’t even be considering it

Paying interest on something like this is pure financial illiteracy

        • +3

Not if you pay it all back within the interest free period (usually 55 days).
Actually, paying with a credit card if you are good at paying your card before interest is accrued can be far better than any other method. You can earn a lot of points/free flights :)
But yes, credit cards are bad for people who aren't good at paying their bills on time or struggling financially.

          • +2

@SimAus007: Not just points, the purchase protection is much stronger on a credit card than buying from your debit card. Much easier to dispute a scam.

          • @SimAus007: I’m not making a blanket statement about using credit cards. The person I responded to said this:

You will get a big credit card bill next time which you will struggle to pay off

        • There's nothing wrong with using credit cards. Just set auto-payment for the balance to maximise the interest-free period. Score points (sign up bonus + cumulative through purchases), and if you have arrangements (mortgage package or lender hopping), then CC is one of the best ways to pay. Plus buyer protection provides peace of mind.

        • Not knowing you can use credit cards in financially beneficial ways is pure financial illiteracy 😂

          • @bumluffa: To be fair, the original comment referred to a "big credit card bill" that "you will struggle to pay off", so I don't think it was referring to the use of credit cards for rewards dollars or buyer protection.

      • Only a true friend would notice this watch

Great find mate, glad I managed to resist the first post…at this price better get in before they sell out.

    • +6

i resisted until i got to this comment :(

    • +2

Why is this not a new post haha
      Nice find
      Even I’m half tempted

  • +1

Just an observation. It’s interesting to see how glass type of watches and weight of laptops are often left out of the descriptions of the deals.

    • +1

Depends on who’s posting. Whenever I put a watch deal up that’s one of things I make certain is in the description, because I know a lot of people care whether it’s sapphire or not.

Personally, I don’t see why it makes a difference. Sapphire is scratch resistant but it’s more brittle. So, while your hardlex crystal mights show light wear more readily at least it’ll survive a hard knock better than sapphire. Sapphire stays smooth and shiny longer, but give it a direct impact and it can shatter. Acrylic is strong, durable, and lightweight but crazing and going cloudy over time is a common problem. They all have their strengths, as far as I’m concerned if you look after your watches and don’t treat them roughly they’ll keep looking good irrespective of the glass.

      • Fair enough. I agree that sapphire and hardlex have their own pros and cons, will be good if treated carefully, and many will prefer one over the other. However I still think it’s worth being noted for the majority of ppp regardless of which type they would prefer, not to mention sapphire is more expensive and can be a factor when deciding the value of the watch.

    • Same problem with Chinese smartphones, they often don't tell you what type of glass the screen uses on the store pages.

$395 for green dial mockingbird presage with bracelet at

    https://www.prouds.com.au/seiko-mens-presage-series-watch-50…

    • Ohhhh that’s gorgeous combo

    • Why have you done this to me

      • +1

I am sorry 😅 . I am now in need of a good excuse after pulling the trigger 😅😅

    • +1

Don't believe the renders either, in real life it is very nice shiny shiny green.

The bracelet is a a wee bit janky but as long as you don't look to closely isn't too bad.

      • Ah, part of the reason I bought another presage with bracelet is because I am not a big fan of its leather strap. Oh well, always need an excuse to buy another watch in thw future lol.

  • +1

    Wow. This is so beautiful
    Okay I couldn’t resist!
I was going to by a new microwave lol but that can wait

  • Have bought one of these from StarBuy before. Really good service and love the watch would definitely recommend at this price. Also its available now.

  • As someone who never wear any dress watch to parties or formal events (I’d leave the Apple Watch at home when wearing suits though), I’m just curious if one would be judged if they wear a cheap dress watch, and how cheap is too cheap, like something from AliXpress? On the other hand, how expensive is too expensive and would be like you’re showing off?

    • Each person has their budget, for some a high end might be anything over $1,000 for others it’s over $100,000. A dress watch (which this Seiko is) would be fine for the more formal occasion and as an everyday watch. I actually have it from my honeymoon in Japan. The dial is nice and comfortable to wear. It’s a good watch for the price. A good watch to dip your toes in what can be an obsessive and/or expensive hobby.

      • Thanks, I also think a dress watch at RRP $700 like this one would be decent enough to “blend in” without having any eye brows raised. The only thing that’s stopping me is the risk of it becoming an expensive hobby as you pointed out.

Chrono24 is a great website. Can look there to get an idea of what prices are like for A grade used watches so if you come across a new watch cheaper or in the same ballpark, pull the trigger.

And if you have your eyes set on a particular watch, just save up and get it otherwise you will never truly be content with any other watches haha.
