Retro Game Corps Review here

Plays most PS2 at 2x res
Psp at 4x
Wii/gc at mostly 2x
3ds at mostly 2x
Vita at 2x
Android games
Some switch indies at 1x
And everything older perfectly (Gameboys/SNES/SEGA/N64/Dreamcast/Arcade/etc)

For those who want to do PS2/PSP/Wii/GC/etc but don't want to go Odin 2 or Steamdeck prices.
It is comparable to the Retroid Pocket 4, but a little less powerful. Though I have read that the power/performance difference is not huge and is really restrained by the emulation software more than the hardware it runs on. Hence why this device could be considered best bang for buck.

this looks like some rather serious h/w for retro gaming

    • This is upper midrange.

      Retroid Pocket 4 Pro
      $$$$

      Odin 2 Mini/Pro
      $$$$$

      • Retroid Pocket 4 Pro is probably the closest competitor right now and which one to go with depends on what tradeoffs you want to make. Bit more money for a smaller form factor, smaller display and but more power. RG556’s display being larger and OLED is a big plus, and still good enough performance up to around GameCube.

Odin 2 would be in another league in terms of performance but also price. Probably comes into play if you want to start looking at Switch games.

  • Good little handlheld I got one on last deal. I did find the included frontend and roms a bit crappy tho…. If anyone has any suggestions would love to hear them. Disclaimer I have not gone down the Retro Game Corp Android emulation setup guide yet

I use Daijishou on my RG405M which is pretty awesome and clean. Set up can be a bit tedious if you're new to the hobby, but Joey's Retro Handhelds on YouTube has some great set up videos. With regards to finding Roms, it's gonna take you a bit of searching as the included Roms are always a mess, and the microSD's they come on are no brand and so very sketchy. Definitely buying microSD and filling up your library on your own is the way to go. www.archive.org has almost every Rom you can think of if you know what file formats to search (through Google), and I would reccomend using a VPN and set it to America if you can as it downloads much faster. If you can't be bothered searching and downloading, you can also buy a preloaded microSD from Etsy for a price.

Yeah all good Roms arent a problem. Seems Daijishou is the way to go so I will spend the time on it. I grabbed the "Retro Roms Best Set" from archive.org if you are looking for a nice curated clean set of Roms.

    • How are you finding the analogue sticks, if you've been playing many games that rely on them? I've got an MM+ so am mostly eyeing this off for Dreamcast and higher, but apparently the sticks are a bit naff which gives me pause considering they'd be in use most of the time.

      • I havent used them other than for Mame Emu which they are absolutely fine for. Also I tend to dock/Bluetooth controller quite a bit. I imagine folks will start modding the sticks in future if they become a real issue. Disclaimer I am not super fussy with controllers as anything is infinitely better than what was around 15-20 years ago :P

Was eyeing this off earlier today waiting for a deal and here we are. Thanks!

  • Been watching lots of reviews for this. The OLED screen at this price is really fantastic. It surprisingly handles quite a lot of the less graphic intensive Switch games quite well.

Hmmm tempting but I don't like android front ends… Only if there's a Linux version with good CFW is jump on it

Just mod a 2nd hand switch lite

    • How?

      • Or an og switch with a soft mod.
        Google ismyswitchpatched

Switch does not perform as well in emulation and requires much more tinkering than the Anbernic

    • 100% agree with this.
Got two Switch lites for cheap. Got parts from Aliexpress and the satisfaction of modding them.

      • Do you guys know who can install a mod for those with no soldering skills?

        • It's not the answer you want, but go to almost any local phone repair guy, odds are they'd be able to do it for you for a few bucks quick smart.

          • @TheDukeOfNukem: Do you need to tell him which bit to solder?

            • @OhNoUShiz: By the time you need to tell them what to solder, they are not the right people.

              Search up on marketplace

        • Best is to go to those people that usually do modchip soldering. They have done it many times and they will support you on the software side.

I have done mine myself, not too comfortable yet of doing others

    • I have a switch Lite, and like it, it's my preferred switch, but this has a better screen and more emulation performance.

      • Is the emulating performance is up to PS1 generation only?

  • That description feels familiar 😀

PSA: the sticks on these are unfortunately really bad, they might as well be a d-pad :(

Bought one last time around and ended up returning it, sadly the fancier games that it's kinda good for (e.g. PS2) just didn't feel right with how bad the sticks were…

I read that they could be fixed with replacements, but honestly having seen videos "fixing them" where there's little to no improvement (they're still bad), plus the fact that you shouldn't have to do this at all, it's regrettably a big nope from me.

Edit: also worth noting that even though PS2 games would generally work fine even with some upscaling, they would still chug at times in a way that wouldn't happen on a more powerful device. Just something to consider, I was a bit underwhelmed with the performance overall and just ended up emulating those games on my lappy + bluetooth gamepad, not the same I know, but at least they run and play well.

    Me: Has Steam Deck
    Also me: Plays R36S daily
Also also me: (profanity) it, what's another 270?

  • How do these fair against a s23 Ultra in terms of emulation power? Better, worse or the same?

    • Not as powerful as the s23 ultra

    • Nowhere near as powerful.

For me the perk of a dedicated handheld is that it isn't my phone, I can use my phone for other things whilst gaming or have it off entirely.

  • tempting until I remembered I have an OLED Steam Deck

    • Whilst the steam deck can do everything this can, very different size-classes. This can float around a bag all day without being noticed, a Steam Deck cannot.

  • Not apple to apple, but this (dedicated emulator gaming with physical buttons) or Lenovo Tab Y700 2023 (more versatile device and said to be good for gaming, but no physical buttons)?

    • How important is portability? If it's just gonna stay in the house, I'd go for the tablet.

You can always get a clamp on controller like a D9 and turn it into a handheld.

Once you get bored of old games, you can just run steamlink and actually play pc games

    • My current setup is using a Samsung S7+ tablet with a gamesir x2 type C controller that I have modded to fit the tablet.
I use moonlight to stream games from my pc to the tablet, and emulation runs like a dream on it. If you can manage to get a controller like the gamesir x2 or g8 galileo and then mod it for a tablet, it'll be 200× better than anything on the market rn for portable gaming at home.
Better picture, higher refresh rate and more fps than anything like the steam deck, if your wifi network can handle it.
