Damn, just ticked over 18 months since closing off my account with AmEx Ultimate Qantas Card. Was really hoping to sign up again with the previous bonus offer of 100k Qantas points. With the current offer, might just wait it out for a better offer to come up. Though, credit card deals have been a bit slow lately.

Yeah I was hoping for the 100K deal from way back, seems like this is the new norm now.

    • I currently hold their Qantas Discovery card, do i still have to (cancel and) wait for 18 months or the wait applies to any Amex cards?

      • If you hold any AMEX card you are ineligible. You would need to have no AMEX card for 18 months.

  • My previous application for an AMEX card (the one with 100k points) got declined (suspect from card churning). How long should I wait before I reapply with AMEX? or is there no point trying again

    • Rough time, my experience with Amex and others is if you've had another Amex for a while you're basically confirmed to get it. They've been treating churners pretty hard recently.

  • Yeah I got declined too unfortunately.

    • Do they ever tell you any reasons for being declined?

The $450 travel credit has been seriously nerfed. You have to use it to book flights with a value of at least $450 which means, in practice, you'll definitely be out of pocket. They won't let you use it for a cheaper booking, even if you forfeit the balance. And, of course, you are restricted to certain flight offerings, which may be more expensive anyway. It still has some value, but it hardly offsets the $450 fee on its own.

Throughout the year there’s many offers that can offset part of the $450 fee. You just have to keep an eye out for it. I would say it’s pretty easy to find over $150 worth of savings. And $450 to use on any qantas flight and 2 lounge passes every year. Also with interest rates up, some churners may not get approval in the future, so it might be worth staying on this card and earn 1.25 points per $.

Being limited to qantas is the main hassle since they don't cover a lot of the international routes i needed and those they did were well over twice the price.

And because you must use the amex site you cannot use the credit to points/rewards plus pay

But this month alone couple of those spend $50 at retailer x get $15 refund has been quite useful and
      20% back on many restaurants/takeaway

Rewarded nearly half the annual fee this month

Wonder if they’re still declining churners

  • I heard that Amex don't approve people other than PR and citizens, can someone confirm if this is true? Don't want to get declined again (recently, ANZ black rejected my application, but they said that I was welcome to apply for Ultimate rewards card since I can borrow up to 10k)

    • +2

what the hell, i would think that is mandatory. who is going to let someone borrow money that is going to leave next year? lol

      • Just fyi, not everyone who is not PR or citizen is going to leave next year. There are different visas, categories with different durations :)

    • +1

Not true. I am with 482 visa and my application was approved within minutes without even providing them my payslip (applied on Feb 24 so just recently).

If you churn credit cards don’t bother applying for an AMEX

    • Looking to start churning. why is churning AMEX a bad option?

      • +1

AMEX apparently pick up on card churners more than other CC providers. I got declined for no apparent reason (along with several others on Ozb) - likely due to churning

  • Can the travel Credit sell/transfer ?

    • Nope

  • I would wait for a better deal, i got this card in january and received 120,000 points. it is a great card though, basically free, but make sure you fly every year at least spending a minimum of $450

  • Dumb question, but i have 19,000 credit from Amex Ultimate Velocity Credit Card. I’m earning 94,350 Gross.

I’m thinking to apply for AnZ Black Frequent Flyer Card (15k minimum credit limit). Should i ask Amex to lower my credit limit? Or what’s the threshold for credit limits?

I’m wondering if AnZ would be allowing 19k (amex) + 15k (AnZ)?

    Please help :)

You'll be borderline. I just did it in a similar position to you (had Westpac $12k, applied for ANZ $15k, earn similar)
Had to jump through some hoops, verifying bonuses, lowering monthly spend etc., and just stumbled across the line and had both for a very short period before I cancelled the Westpac one once I got my Qantas points.

  • I just applied for this, and was asked to provide proof of income immediately. Hoping this is a positive sign, andwon't get rejected.
Have 1 NAB Platinum credit card with 6k limit open, and closed 2 cards earlier this year.

      Update: approved within 1 day

  • why is it only 60k with a referral usually you get more?

    • yeah, its better not to use someones referral link unfortunately it looks like
