Yes, just the exterior panels in different colours. Same machine : )
Bought this 10 years ago for around the same price lol
Cheaper now, factoring inflation.
$538 today is about $415 10 years ago, according to RBA calculator: https://www.rba.gov.au/calculator/annualDecimal.html
Then you paid more
inflation yo
Great machine, inflation is only noticeable because the same product has stuck around for so long. Been using one for 6 years so far.
Same, 2018 on Qantas points. It's made a lot of good coffee
Yeah , my old BES870 grinder is broken but it's been 5 years+ . Still happy with it.
Mine broken after 7 years. Time to buy another one. :)
I don't know how JB's Perks deal works. I have my current Perks ID and it still shows $ 598. Do I need a new ID with new email address? Thanks.
I think you should check your mail box associated with the Perks account. You should have received an exclusive coupon for further Perks discounts.
Cheers!
This or Barista Pro?
I went from an Aldi pod machine to Nespresso and finally Breville Pro. The latter is by far the best machine I've owned, especially if you're into milk-based coffees. The Pro's ThermoJet technology makes lattes a breeze.
Literally any coffee machine is better than a Nespresso or Aldi pod!!
Bambino plus + standalone grinder.
The Bambino Plus is undoubtedly a better machine. IMO it’s worth the extra money, but I appreciate not everyone can/will spend the difference for a BBP and grinder
Why do you consider the BBP a better machine out of curiosity?
@GuniGuGu: The main reason is because it doesn’t have a grinder. A BBP with a good grinder will produce better coffee. The downside of course is that it costs more overall
@beltdrive: I don't mean to be petty then… But I wouldn't call the BBP a 'better machine'… If anything the reverse, the bes870 is clearly the better machine in this situation as having a grinder is better than not right?
I would say BBP + better grinder will result in better coffee.
Again not trying to be petty, but wasn't sure if I was missing anything. I currently have a niche zero with a BDB and kinda wanna switch to the BBP to save bench space, but would be sacrificing a few things in the process :'(
@GuniGuGu: the bam plus takes 3 seconds to start up and steam wand is much stronger (4 holes vs 1).
for those who doesnt want to invest time in learning steaming milk, the bam plus also does auto milk@GuniGuGu: as @chew_chew mentioned, there's auto milk. I can steam milk manually (I used to own a Lelit), but the BBP's auto streaming is good enough that I don't bother anymore
The Niche Zero is a great grinder. I don't think you'd be sacrificing as much as you think. Conventional wisdom these days is that a good grinder is more important than a good espresso machine for making good espresso
Out of interest what grinder are you pairing with it? I've got a bambino plus but want to upgrade my old cheap grinder.
I got a manual grinder (Kingrinder).
Takes 2 mins or I could also use a drill. Coffee tastes better because i had to work for it. Now my grip is stronger too. Can carry all the shopping bags in one trip.@MuddyRubber: What model did you get of the Kingrinder? I'm happy with a manual option and it will take up less space!
Depending if you are heavy into milk-based recipes, if you are, definitely lean towards the Barista Pro (I own)
Biggest difference in the Barista Express is it uses thermocoil vs. Barista Pro's thermo jet heating systemThe Barista Pro can get steam out in about 5 seconds from cold start. Hence great for the first morning zombie-revival coffee routine.
Any other machine not having thermo jet has some pre-heat times just to match this steam out performance.
Also, because of the quick heating, you have less of a time gap between brewing your espresso and steaming your milk, whether you brew your espresso first, then rush the boiler to get steam; or like the internet coffee influencers suggest to get the milk done first then dump water to cool down the heating element for the espresso. The time gap between the two is just longer.
If the base line requirement is just brewing an espresso and no time consideration, I reckon this Express is an even match, but with the other cosideration points involved, probably stretch for the Barista Pro.
I am a milk coffee drinker so Barista Pro stands out from the comments, Thanks for the detailed response :)
I still hate that this extracts at 14bars. Did the OPV adjustment mod, just reduced the pressure by probably less than 1 bar. Still extracts at 12:30 region instead of 1:00 dial postion.
Yep, I just added a $10 dimmer to the pump.
Sooooooo much better. Should be there by default as the shower screen is a single point exit. 12 bar at a single point is all bad.
Starting a shot at 8 bar, then tapering off.. magnificent..do it. Took me 45mins. Run the dimmer box (use any plastic enclosure) out via the main power lead.True, need to do that. Maybe in next month or two.
Do it ( I went with a 4000w / 10 - 240v speed controller).
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/404746853577?
Add a puck screen (to help with shower screen distribution)..happy days.
Full flow control/ PID. $2000 machine.Pre infusion normal, then 8 bar, then reduce to 6 bar as soon as full dark extraction is gone (a few seconds).
Bonus is the water lasts heaps longer and you don't need to empty the train that often any more. I purge a shot in a cup before doing actual shot. Also, you get a FULL extraction, so an 8g single shot tastes better/ stronger than a machine default double shot. No brainer.
@tunzafun001: Cool, will take a look. Link for instructions and puck screen if you have? Thanks.
Also i think the new express with the tamper built in extracts at 9 bars.
Yeah it's definitely better. But it's just the OPV, so it just dumps more water into the tray. All pumps are 15 bar by default. Need to dim them electrically.
Puck screen was $1.50 from Ali Express!
Instructions- take 2 power wires (active neutral) going to pump and attach to controller. Then two wires exiting controller back to pump. Make them long enough so the controller can sit at the side/ top of your machine. Add spade connectors so you can put back to default if required.
Disassemble instructions - You tube. Can do it in 5 mins now I've done it before.*Probably should do the mod as a paid service to members. Also convert EV charges to work from Tesla Destination chargers if anyone needs it.
@tunzafun001: Thats simple enough. Recetnly had to disasseble EVERY thing to reach the group head as the screwes holding the grouphead had come lose and the gasket used to blow off everytime. Took over a few hours to get it done.
@[Deactivated]: That's rough!
I got mine from a hard rubbish pile.
It had a cracked plastic elbow (replaced it with a brass one), and a cracked teflon hose, that was corroded into the boiler.
It was stuck good!!!
Soaked the little brass ring in vinegar, and wiggled it every day for a week. Put a screw through it, then pulled it with a claw hammer… Eventually came out.
Good as new… well with the brass elbow and dimmer….better than new!
Wish I could modify the pressure of my Delonghi Arte. But at the end of the day it outputs coffee flavoured caffeine, and that's the only reason I bought it. Works at the beginning of the day too.
Agree, the only reason why I need to reduce the pressure is because I use a single shot double basket, and when the pressure increases to 14 bars, more water flows compared to pre-infusion pressure, where thick coffee flows.
I get the same with my double open basket. Comes out quite watery most of the time. But oh well. At least I've got the technique down to stop channelling and spraying.
@AustriaBargain: If it's watery, it's probably shooting down the edges. But at 12+ bar…you ain't going to stop it no matter what you do.
Try holding down the start shot button the whole time. It will keep it in Pre-infusion mode, which is just under 7 bar on the BES 870. It will go full pressure when you release the button, so quickly press again to stop it. It will all make sense.
Big improvement if you have a 12 bar brute!
@tunzafun001: Holding the button down programs how long it will operate when you just press the button in future presses. So hold it for 15 seconds, it'l run for 15 seconds from now on. At least I assume that's how it works.
@AustriaBargain: Nup, there's a program button for that. Holding the single or double shot button in keeps it at "pre infusion" for as long as you hold it in for….except pre infusion on this is basically full infusion.
@tunzafun001: The only other button, either than single and double cup buttons, is the steam button.
@AustriaBargain: ..hang on, you are talking about the Delonghi (I'm talking about the BES)…sorry.
Dimmer/ speed controller mod then (exactly the same pump)
Where's the dual boiler 😭
It's on sale and in stock. With the 10% off it comes to $1,167.30. The cheapest it's been in a while https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/breville-the-dual-boiler-…
Still not good enough. Needs to be sub $1k like previous deals
Unfotunately, I think with inflation we'll never see that again. I think $1,100ish is the new sub $1k
inflation
there not bad for a first machine they will get you to learn the basics of making espresso. or though its a small portafilter, I prefer full size 58mm portafilters myself because you get more out of your shot.
Do agree, but I like the 54mm for a single shot. With a pump speed controller you get full flow control (with a pressure gauge for reference) for under $600.
trying to match a low priced BES878 pro but could not stack the perk code. :(
Does this come with the milk jug?
yes, not the fancy temp one though.
it comes with the dosing funnel too
This is a fine machine, very quick heat up (nearly instant) and makes good, consistent coffee.
Just adjust the internal burr.
Uder $500 during Black Friday
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/product/breville-bes870hasn't been this low for several months
I have a Barista Express, I've upgraded to a standalone grinder, so I no longer use the inbuilt Barista Express grinder.
Is there any benefit (aside from the smaller unit) in moving from the Barista Express to a Bambino Plus?Bambino units have the thermojet (3s heating) as in the Barista Pro, unlike the thermocoil (30s heating) in the Barista express. Bambino plus also has some automatic milk texturing or something, but really the Bambino series is like a Barista Pro but without the grinder.
Thanks - I think I'll hold out til I can afford to upgrade to the Dual Boiler
But it doesn't support pre infusion mode only, and some are set 11 bar +.
Amazes me Breville didnt get something this simple (and rudimentaryl) right. Espresso is 8-9 bar.
I don't suggest buying this coffee machine at this price! The price should be reduced much more in EOFY discounts.
I bought mine 15 years ago around 699 during a black friday I believe, it's still running fine.
if mine ever broke down, I am goign to get a dual boiler one. What is the advantage of dual boiler over this one?
Everything.
If you have to ask you don’t need one.
This machine is a life changer for those getting into better coffee. There is a very loyal community for it too.
Dumb question but is the only difference between the BES870 models the colour? I'm a bit weirded out by the specs showing slightly different sizes and weights. Is this one plastic and the other metal?
