Unlimited 5G data at $40/month sounds a pretty good deal.

    then….

    Unlimited mobile data
Unlimited mobile data at speeds up to 20Mbps.

    🤣🤣🤣

    • +6

yeah 20Mbps is the bottom end of 4G speeds / top end of 3G LOL We give you 5G but cap you to 3G speed hahaha

      • +2

Ive been swapping to and from this deal every few months. I notice 0 differanc between max 20mbps this offers and telstra 5g on normal strolling and all day youtube. 5g on allows for full HD video calls over facetimes 9something you can get over 4g no matter the speed) and less congestion in packed areas. Its a steal at 3 months half price. Just keep porting in and out again.

Netflix recommends 15Mbps for 4K so acceptable for the average person as an NBN replacement.

It should be noted that NBN are raising prices on the 25 & 50Mbps plans which will encourage more people to abandon the NBN for cheaper services.

It should be noted that NBN are raising prices on the 25 & 50Mbps plans

It should be noted that NBN will be doubling and tripling upload/download speeds for higher plans and no extra cost too…

        • +3

Creating a digital divide between those who can afford $100 or more a month and those who cannot. This mobile plan is not targeted at those who can pay those prices.

It should also be noted that the plans are very asymmetric with download:upload ratios around 10:1 or lower, whereas the original plan was 5:2.

You can get 100/20 for $74.95

            Which suits 99% of people.

Can confirm this is the case, I use this Felix plan on 4g to stream Netflix etc. All services achieve 4k with a small buffer period at the start of a movie/TV show

    • I guess latency would be improved on 5G?

      • not on Vodafone 5G. Latency is worse than their 4G’s

        • I concur. Latency and speed, both went worse when coming to 5G

  • +3

It's still capped at 20mbs no? If all it can do is 20 then 3G would probably have been enough anyway, 5g is a useless addition.

Still love Felix, have had it for years now, but I won't be upgrading my 4g modem it resides in.

    • +2

Hmm… So you have managed to remain undetected throughout the move, and from my research including when Vodafone started to notify those clients without voLTE support.

Makes me wonder how were people getting caught with it inside a modem in the first place?

I only recently bought a sim, but I am not using it as a broadband replacement as I only average 10-15GB per day which is like an hour or two on 1440p youtube on my breaks. I could bump it up on my phone to 4k, but then it randomly stutters sometimes even on 5G.

The average user is probably doing a lot more, especially since 5G is rolling out to more customers, maybe 1TB a month will be deemed a normal mobile user.

Apparently on average a NBN user probably does 3 TB of usenet/torrenting which explains why the costs are so high…
      Fair usage discussion on reddit

      • Yeah I haven't had any issues. Had Felix as my actual phone sim for a good long while, while it was hotspotting my house from a phone as a home Internet replacement. When I moved in with the missus a couple years back and there was more devices on it at one time (that phone kinda conked out at 10 concurrent devices) I bought a little pocket wifi modem, put the sim in that, and it's been on 247 ever since. Usage per month varies but usually close to or over 1tb.

A month or two back we got NBN in the house, got 2 years absolutely free (long story) so Felix wasnt needed, a mate who was about to jump aboard Felix took over my sim and modem (bc my account is still 35 a month rather than 40) and it's been his home Internet perfectly fine since then too.

        • So your mate is accessing the internet under your name?

          • +5

@WatchNerd: I can only hope the porn he watches is consistent with the years of history I've provided to Felix.

            • +1

@TheDukeOfNukem: Hopefully porn is the worst thing he is doing.

              • +4

@WatchNerd: You're right. He likes anime, I don't want them to think I watch that stuff too. Maybe I should get it back.

        • +1

You're lucky they kept you on a grandfathered plan.

        • Whats the modem you got?

      • Yeah I had it in a modem and received the following from Felix.
We’re writing to inform you that we’ve detected unauthorised usage on your felix account. This is in breach of our SFOA and Fair Use Policy.

We request that you immediately cease using your felix SIM in a non-mobile voice device, otherwise your service will be suspended within 7 days.

Unfortunately its on Vodafone's 4G/5G network

    • +1

I find vodafone's network to be horrible in sydney

      • +1

        Agreed!

  • +3

Why is 5G capped at 20 Mbps? It's just for marketing purposes, offering no real benefit to consumers.

    • +1

Future proofing I guess. It's a redundant upgrade though in this case.

    • It signals to an high demand & expensive to service group of customers (see other comments) that this service is not for them.

    • +2

5G at that speed, as well as marketing, is for carrier benefits. They can fit a lot more users into the same "space" using newer transmission algorithms (if you're bored, you can look up OFDM and QAM to nerd out).

      • I'm a student of BlackBerry Messenger, I didn't even think about this, it's been that long since I considered the limitations.

    • Stop people using it as permanent internet.

Given NBN 50/20 and 100/20 I'd get on it if it isn't CGNAT and Vodafone.

  • Do I need to change my SIM or not? I got an email saying I needed to download a new eSIM for it to work, however it changed over automatically to 5G on my iPhone a week or so ago.

    • +2

you just answered your own question

      • It was a FAQ. Hence, answered as well.

  • anyone tested this on a Vodafone 5G modem ?

  • +1

I've been using this as NBN replacement for a couple of years now, and it's great. I stream Netflix, Foxtel, Prime, Tubi, YouTube etc, no problems. I have the Sim in an old 4G phone which is connected to a travel router via USB tethering, so it looks to Felix like one device. We have 13 devices connected to the router. If you try to hotspot everything, iPhone only allows 5 devices to be tethered, Android allows 10. On holiday, I take the set up with me, and a Chromecast, so we can stream on hotel TV's. I have FTTP that I don't use anymore because 20Mbps works fine for us.

    • Same, bloody awesome deal. and because people are moving to 5g on this in theory my 4g should speed up and be less congested. Pretty low monthly user here around 150-300gb per month. Surprised that other companies haven't jumped on this yet. Slow 4g home broadband alternates around the $40pm

  • this, combined with GeForce now makes my mac a game anywhere computer. Bloody awesome setup for the last few years.
can only have 1 number per account so that's very annoying so i have all my 3 emails needing to swap between to manage all my sim cards.

  • Any recomendations for an unlimited sim and NBN combo deal near penrith. optus mobile signal is bad - I assume vodaphone would be worse

Looks like Exetel use telstra - worth the extra cost over Flip & Felix?

    • I assume vodaphone would be worse.

There is absolutely no reason to assume that. Get a cheap Lebara Sim from Woolworths and test it. If it's good, you have phone and broadband, unltd, $40 p. month from Felix.
