Walked into Repco this morning and surprised to see 5L Penrite 5W30 at 50% off. Was going to just buy a filter and get oil cheaper at Autobarn ($39 for Castrol, Members Price).

  • Good for daily use Toyota, not good for gr86

    • oddly specific

    • You need the special boxer engine oil that is designed to prevent the pistons wearing out on the bottom.

  • Just in time. Nearly bought last week for about $45. Thanks OP!

    Any 5W-40 deals please?

  • "This does not fit your vehicle." BMW 318Ti E46 :(

  • At this price I would change my Toyota 2GR-FE oil every 5000k. full syn Penrite, Castrol edge and Mobil1 are all excellent lubricants and resist shear and run cooler than some competitors. Ok the V6 takes 6+ litres so two more will grace the garage shelf, then the mower gets serviced for winter snooze.
    Thank you OP.

Definitely I run it my RAV4 hybrid with great results- smoother and quieter than the 0W-16 recommend viscosity.

      • +1

Love all the down votes - these days recommend viscosity is a compromise between fuel efficiency/ emissions reductions vs what’s actually best for the engine. I can guarantee my engine on 5W-30 will outlive an engine on the factory 0W-16 living in the Australia climate.

  • Awesome, thanks OP, stocking up for the next service!

It's the first time I've logged into Repco online and I found a few hundred points in my account, enough for a $20 GC which I put against this. Remember to check your points balances prior to purchase!

  • Thank you! Any car enthusiasts have thoughts on how this goes up against Magnatec 5w-30 Start-Stop? Interesting to note that Penrite states one of the benefits as better wear protection for idle stop engines. Wonder if this is basically the same kinda stuff that Castrol claim is in the intelligent engine oil clinging molecules?

whatever is cheapest. As long as the oil is changed regularly with a full synthetic oil that meets or exceeds the minimum specs (e.g. API) required by the car and it's the correct XW-XX viscosity, it doesn't make much of a difference. Marketing is what oil brands use to make their product look different.

    • They're all much the same unless you're looking to go for an extended oil change interval. The fully synthetic label is a bit of marketing scam these days. Most of them are just hydro cracked mineral oil, only the really expensive ones are proper group 4 & 5 oils (PAO & ester).

Would be ok to use this to top up, when needed, a car that uses the same Penrite Enviro+ but 5w40?

    • I reckon, you're propbably changing every 10k right?

I would have thought the Castrol edge is a better deal at AB.

    • when it was $30.49 at supercheap price beat, it definitely was

Even at $39, I would take Castrol edge as one of best oils you can buy!

      • it's currently 30.49 - no price beat necessary
