        • or even just wait for it to be last MY model it should surely come down more

  • In Victoria I see $55,900 for the base model Y

    • +2

Add the $1,400 delivery fee and $400 order fee.

It's funny how people applaud new low prices for stuff like phones of any brand, laptops, etc, and so many criticises EVs when the same happens.

Let's face it: they all are consumer products, and all will lose a lot of value the moment you take them home from the shop (or dealership).

The point is: if you buy now you get to use them now, and you'll never know when the next price drop will come. If getting to use something now isn't worth anything to you, just don't buy. No need to pile on garbage.

I for my part am happy to drive an EV. And I am happy to see prices dropping, because it means more people can afford to do the same.

I can't wait for second hand EV prices to come down as well to levels that even poorer people who care about their emissions can make the switch.

    • +2

It's funny how people applaud new low prices for stuff like phones of any brand, laptops, etc, and so many criticises EVs when the same happens.

Especially Android phones. That $1000 Samsung will drop significantly in value compared to an iPhone.

People are only being sooks because it's an EV. It's like the boomers complaining about the trends of our generation.

      • +4

Yeah, WHO COULD BELIEVE people would care more about a $60K item super-rapidly depreciating (as a result of the company they bought it from) than a $1K effectively disposable item? Unbelievable.

        • +3

Yep. These drops are awesome. It's getting to the point where EVs are going to me more affordable than a new Corolla.

        • +12

Residual values of cars as per ATO:
          1 year 65.63%
          2 years 56.25%
          3 years 46.88%
          4 years 37.50%
          5 years 28.13%

All those recent price drops are a drop in the ocean compared to what happens with every new car once you take possession.

As I wrote: I don't see many actual Tesla owners complaining about the price drops. But lots of EV haters bashing on about them.

For them things now start getting real: who will buy their second hand ICE in a few years when good charging infrastructure is in place and a second hand EV costs the same, but without the fuel cost?

    • +1

these price drops don't happen very often for other cars ICE etc. I can see why they're upset if someone had recently purchased one in the past year.

      • +6

Look who's "upset": people who don't have any intention of every buying an EV and just want to rubbish the whole idea.

Not many actual purchasers here that complain…

        • +1

we should all be happy with a price drop, right? what's not to like if you don't even own it?

  • +7

yes it dropped again hahaha.. come on EV5. you promised to undercut model Y by $5k hahah.. want to see $50K ev5

    • Unfortunately, I think it will be priced between the Niro and EV6 (i.e., $65-75k) not at the Niro price point ($50-60k) as it's replacement. I hope I am wrong.

    • What avout ev4 and ev3?

      • ev4 not coming to AU. ev3 too new so don't know any price guide yet.
Would really like to see some real competition from KIA, and for me more on ice car since i need 7seaters and cannot spend on EV9.
most brands I find have started discounting except for Toyota, Kia and Hyundai due to high demand still.

time for a market crash. all the current discount is just marketing spin on "we've overcharged and cannot be honest but need to drop the price back to normal".

  • any melbourne people seen right near the Forster Rd freeway inbound entrance, there's a building on the corner that has "TESLA" on the front and is all black (if you're coming from FTG Rd towards the freeway).. anyone know whats the deal with that?

    • As I understand it, that is Telsa's new delivery centre in Mt Waveley.

  • +2

Brought last year, love my Tesla, wish more people can enjoy it and someday FSD can be really handy like US in Aussie.

    • +2

      Where did you bring it?

      • NSW when there was $3000 rebate.

  • +3

another day, another Tesla price drop

  • -4

It’s showing as 55,900 for RWD now when I tried. LOL!

    • Add the $1,400 delivery fee and $400 order fee (both you can't opt out of paying) and tell me what the total is

      • Oops! Yeah, sorry I considered the delivery fee and order cost as part of orc.

  • +6

Love seeing these price drops. Will probably get one (eventually), but be aware and do an INSURANCE quote on a Tesla before you get excited.
I'm getting quotes of around $2700~ with a perfect history, no claims, etc. A few other mates at work getting similar prices in other suburbs. The price to repair these damn things is very high and insurance companies have caught on.

For comparison, I did a quote on a GT Mustang and it was $1200.. After a few years that insurance will very quickly chew up any potential savings.
There's a YT video of a Australian guy who bought a damaged BYD Atto and wanted to see if the battery is serviceable/repairable in anyway -> Doesn't look like it so these things are gonna be VERY expensive to repair…. (Hence stupid insurance prices)

    • +1

Curious about the Atto thing, got a link to make it easier to find?

    • +1

My annual insurance premium is almost identical to the Camry I was cross-shopping it against - $1150 comprehensive through Allianz.

Obviously everyone's circumstances are different, and some insurance companies are definitely more EV-averse than others.

    • +1

My advice would be to shop around. Our Y is currently insured with RAC (WA) for $948 but for comparison I ran up a quote with AAMI and it was $1,468. Allianz was $2200 and NRMA $2100

    • I am getting $1200 for BYD Atto with Woolworths. Not very expensive.

  • Model Y RWD for NSW shows 55,900 for me before on road costs.. am I missing something?

    • +1

Yes, $1800 in fees that you can't avoid in any state.

      • Ok ok got it thanks!

  • +7

Do you reckon I put this on my 28 degrees credit card and claim price drops for the next 12 months?

    • Will Tesla take credit card for the full amount?

  • +1

were the model 3 and Y always this close in price? not sure why anyone would grab a 3 if they got space for a Y.

    • +4

Different preferences. Some people like the more sporty sedan shape of the 3 rather than the Y.

Also the 3 was just updated with a heap more features only a couple of months ago, they refer to it as the 'Highland Model 3' update. Vs the Y which has not undergone the major refresh yet.

      • Might be a good thing the Y hasn’t been upgraded. Nobody likes the no indicator stalks on the Highland. The best ppl say about it is “you’ll get used to it”. Maybe…

    • +2

The Y is significantly uglier IMO, and I have a deep distaste for SUVs in general.

Having said that, it's an extremely practical and versatile car, and at these new prices it's excellent value so I can't blame people for choosing it.

      • as I keep telling my wife the model Y looks like an apple mouse. unfortunately we need the space

  • +7

    Hello, recession.

  • +7

Great deal for one of the safest cars in the world. Considering buying one for my parents (already own one).
Wholesale battery prices are coming down which is great for the consumer. More EV's in cities mean cleaner air and less pollution-related lung illnesses such as cancer.

  • 1k difference between the 3 and the Y. Wow.

    • +2

which SUV is cheaper but accelerates faster? I want to buy one

    • TO be frank its pretty quick. Anything under 7 sec is no slouch.

        • It's not, but it's not like traffic is getting any faster so you dont need a faster car to keep up. If anything traffic is getting slower. Anything under 10 sec is perfectly adequate.

  • Now I feel lucky because I didn't buy a Tesla 4 months ago. They probably dropped at least $6k in price already.

  • +2

Already own a Model Y since 2022 and was thinking of changing the ICE car with a BMW IX3 but this offer is just too good. I hope the other EV manufacturers also slash prices

  • +2

This is a great price for the QLD buyers with the $6k rebate.

Pretty obvious they're clearing Model Y stock before the new update.

Holding out for Model 3 or Y to reach sub $50k

  • -8

    Support petrol cars

  • I am just wondering when would they launch the refreshed model… at least get us the face lifted version that is available in China, with faster acceleration and ambient lighting.

  • +1

    More competition from China
    Juniper update next year
    Overstocked in other countries

Perfect storm for even more drops over the next 12 months?

  • +2

Novated leased at $70k just about one year ago. Not happy but a deal is a deal.

    • What's your balloon/payout figure?
I think many early adopters are in for a shock come end of lease for their payout figures.

      • My NL is for 3 years, and the balloon figure is $35450 inc. GST. Still have two years left so will have to reassess then.

        • +1

Ouch. You'll probably have to pay out a lot more than it's worth..?

          • @Maz78: Do you have to pay the balloon? Can’t you just say no thanks and return the car back?

            • @cloudy: That is the whole point. Or you roll into a new NL.

But yeah, having already paid what, 20-30k to use a car for 3 years feels expensive to me. But the last brand new car I bought was like 24k over 10 years ago now. So I might be a bad test case here.

              • @serpserpserp:

That is the whole point. Or you roll into a new NL.

So you do have to pay the balloon? Is that the answer? I’ve never taken a NL

                • @cloudy: Yeah you don't have to. But I'm not sure what happens after that. Perhaps if they can't sell the car for the balloon you owe, they might charge you more?

                  • @serpserpserp: Thanks, I had a google and I found this.

When your novated lease ends, you have the option to: make the residual payment to own the car; refinance the residual into a new lease term with the same car; or trade in the car and start a new lease with a different vehicle

From one NL company, but I read it as it’s how it works for all companies…

                    • @cloudy: Weird I thought you can effectively hand it back, but if the residual value is lower than your balloon payment you are in trouble.

            • @cloudy: Depends on how the lease is setup, often you WILL have to pay the residual.

          • @Maz78: Quite possibly :-(

            • @areustillpretty: Do you mind sharing what the yearly cost is in the first 3 years? I'm curious at the numbers of NL…

  • +2

Genuine question, how many months of income do people normally put aside for a car?
IE, if I had income of 5k each month, is it reasonable to put 6 months worth of income (30k) into a car?
I see so many high end vehicles in lower income areas and wonder how many months of income they put into it
(No judgement of course, just curious)

    • +1

If you are ok cashflow wise I like to calculate the cost of owning a car per annum as a better reflection of how much of your income you are spending on cars
Eg. if you plan to keep the car for 10 years, look on redbook the depreciation after 10 years (which is very conservative and roughly half way between a trade in price vs private sale price), plus cost of servicing maintenance and divided by 10. I wouldn't want to spend more than 10% of my post tax income on cars, and ideally 5% or below but I'm not a car guy
and don't forget opportunity cost of the cost of the car in cash

      • Thanks for the reaponse, I'm fortunate enough to have a decent income, but unjust can't justify spending like some people do. I guess a big factor is just around preference and what they like too :)

      • Ahh yes servicing, I forgot about that. Although I am due for a service on my MY23 model 3 next year, for the first time.

  • -1

RWD showing as 55800 for me in VIC + on road

  • There’s a 48% difference between the base spec MY and the performance spec. That’s massive.

  • +1

Price will keep dropping until new Y comes out next year. I would rather wait and pay more for new Y, current model is so outdated.

  • -1

I know a couple of people that have been holding out for the inevitable 7-seater Model Y. Instead of releasing that in Australia to increase sales, they have repeatedly dropped the price.

    Bravo, Elon.

    • 7 seater model Y will never make it to Australia because of the ADR's… Too unsafe.

  • Wonder what happens in next few months when all of these are here: https://www.carsales.com.au/editorial/details/12-new-chinese…

    • +2

best way to find out is to wait a few months and see

      • Heh but FOMO on what appears to be a great bargain now. But try to catch a falling knife…

  • Not sure if anyone already spotted this, but if you search existing inventory instead of ordering, the cheapest 2024 rwd in NSW drive away is $57902.00 and LR is $71867.00 including all fees
To find these as not on the y page either do a google search on existing Tesla inventory or on the website go though model 3 used inventory, then change to new and model y.

    • Its a $2500-3000 saving to order from inventory of the model y in qld. They have the older silver wheel covers pictured.

Does anyone know if that means the they'll be HW3 instead of the newer HW4?

Also would the silver wheel cover one have ultrasonic parking sensors?

      • asked a tesla rep and was told the cheaper inventory ones are HW3 with ultrasonic parking sensors. Not sure if its worth a $2856 saving to be on HW3. The parking sensors sound like a bonus to have.

        • They’re both parking sensors. The new Tesla update has enabled both uss and vision for cars on hw3 which you can choose which you want to use. Having used both now my preference is for uss.

  • +1

$15K more for the LR in QLD. If they dropped the 24 LR so its eligible for the $6k rebate I'd order today. Tempted by the M3 option but the Y would suit our needs better.

    • Both great cars. Model Y is nice for a family with more space.

    • They just did a pricecut of $3k for LR, so if you get a no option or very lightly optioned one you should be eligible for rebate. The driveaway price is over $68000 inc GST but if you read the conditions on the QLD EV rebate website it says dealer delivery ($1400) + rego fees not included in that price (they call it dutiable value). So if you subtract that then it will fall just under $68k so should be eligible for rebate. I want them to give me an invoice with the delivery marked separately so I can submit for rebate application…

      • Below is the base LR MY cost summary from Tesla. No additions or removable options.
As I understand it $71,700 - delivery of $1400 = $70,300 is the dutiable value.
The rego gets added on further down so cant be deducted from this.
How do you find a further $2300 of deductions to get to $68k or are you talking about M3?

edit I realize now your probably referring to inventory

        Vehicle Subtotal (including GST) $71,700
Includes delivery fee of $1,400 and order fee of $400
        Luxury Car Tax $0
        Local Stamp Duty $1,434
        Local Registration Costs $346
        Local CTP $370
        Local Plate Fee $44
        On Road Fees Subtotal $2,194
        Drive Away Price $73,894
        Est. 5-year fuel savings -$5,500
        Price after est. savings $68,394

        • From the QLD govt website: Dutiable value means the purchase price of the ZEV, including all accessories and options added to the vehicle and any other charges or fees levied by the dealer on the purchaser.

Dealer delivery charges, registration fees and vehicle registration duty are not included as part of the purchase price considerations.

The car I ordered has a vehicle order agreement as follows (how it appears on the motor vehicle agreement)

          Model 3 Long Range – $64900
          Stealth Grey Paint – $2300
          Delivery Fee – $1400
          Order Fee – $400
          Total inc. GST – $69000
          CTP - $386
          Local rego fees - $376
          Local stamp duty - $1380
          Plate fee - $44

          Total drive away - $71186.

I'm basing it off $67600 (total cost in gst without including dealer delivery or state fees).

          Does that seem right?

          • @rawrbaato: That seems correct for M3 as Tesla site confirms that spec would be eligible for rebate. My confusion was I thought you were referring to MY as the LR version of that is still $2k+ above the threshold regardless of specifications and options.

  • +4

Every used Y on car sales in Victoria is more expensive than a new one. People seem to be paying it too. Very strange.

    • Some of that is the options - eg anything other than white is like $3k extra

    • +1

Who is actually paying more for use?

Advertised price does not equal sales price.

      • Advertised price does not equal sales price.

Exactly, that is the dream price. Good luck to them.

Easily the best cars I have driven (I have owned over 50 cars as a commercial vehicle importer).

I used to be the biggest rev head until I drove a Tesla.

It combines comfort, reliability, performance, safety and tech all in one car.
Most who bad mouth the car have never driven one for 10 minutes.
It is one of the safest cars in the world (see ANCAP and international safety scores).
I love not having to go to a petrol station when I can simply plug it in at home.
I have only spent $100 a year on maintenance on my model 3 (wipers and cabin air filter)

The cost coming down is great, it is due to traditional car makers not being able to afford to make a profitable electric car, driving down whole sale battery prices as they cancel contracts. Tesla and others buying cheap batteries, passing that onto consumers.

The more electric cars there are in our cities, the cleaner the air, and the less pollution-related lung cancers.

This is Aus Bargain! Enjoy the prices dropping :)

Just curious. How much you paid for Insurance? Just did some sample quotes and it was around $6k for me. That really put me off.

      • $150 a month currently. Try AAMI. Insurance is also cheap with RAC in WA.
