    Cheaper at Woolworths

    • +15

      But this is 688 ply

      • You meant 344 ply? 🤣

    • That’s a ‘premium’ for cheap.
This is just ‘cheap’ at a premium.

    • +1

      Oh. Bless your heart. 🤭

  • I loved Walter Isaacson's biography on Steve Jobs, how does this one compare?

    • +6

It looks highly reviewed. But not suitable for Elon Musk haters

      • +2

The haters will find plenty of material to stoke their hatred. As they did with the Jobs biography.
It does not shy away from telling the whole story. Both excellent biographies.

    • +3

Yes, I too liked the Jobs bio, even though I did not like Jobs himself prior to reading the book.

And yes, I liked the Musk bio too, even though I do not like the man himself. I found it an interesting insight into how he operates.

    • +3

If you want probing insights, Isaacson is NOT your man. Unflattering direct reporting of whatever they say (i.e. how most of the press reports on Musk?) then he is what you want.

      • +2

Sounds like you've not actually read his books. There is plenty of reporting of what others say too, much of it not at all flattering.

I don't know how anyone could read either book, and not see a deeply flawed character. Which is how most people are in real life, just less interesting. What are you looking for? Are you just a hater looking for a hit piece?

    • I liked the early chapters where it talked about how he started, his background, family and school days. The later stuff like twitter take over etc, feel it was already over captured by the media, this is more from his perspective, not that interesting, just business news.

I already read his previous book, so alot of the stuff I knew already.

      • Wasn’t it written well before the Twitter thing? Or is this an updated version?

        • That stuff happened as he was finishing the book so some of it made it in. But it "feels" different to read as it switches from biography to "day in the life" a little bit

Elon Musk thinks Ukraine should surrender to Putin, become a dictatorship and he thinks Trump should become president again. A man who wishes he could be a dictator. His an anti vaxxer. He goes on and on about freedom of speech but is 100% fine with china's censorship of everything.
That tells you all you need to know about Elon.

    • +11

If that's the case why did he risk the ire of both Russia and China by providing continuous starlink equipment and coverage to Ukraine ?

      • +24

He was doing business for the most part, fulfilling commercial contracts to make money, as he and his company does, and it was mostly done through third parties, so not even something bothering Russia much. And he also intervened to explicitly and unexpectedly turn off Starlink during an operation in 2022, causing the failure of the operation and additionally loss of precious Ukrainian military equipment into enemy hands - despite requests from Ukraine to turn it back on.

        • +1

"He also Intervened to explicitly and unexpectedly turn off Starlink during an operation in 2022".

          MARCH 12, 2023
Spooked by the company’s new limits in Ukraine, military leaders are mulling new types of contracts.
Pentagon Looking to Make Sure SpaceX Doesn’t Abandon Them in War. He has balls going against the US Government. Pretty sure they could label it treason.

        • -4

this is the reason why he should never have helped. He isn't running a government or a charity. He donated the starlink equipments and bandwidth but unless he kept giving it out for free, ie at his own expense, then he would be painted as a villain, which is what's happening now reading at all the posts here. I would have just not giving it to them to start off with, stay out of it.

          • +7

@Frozensage: Bless. Musk did not give starlink for free. That was debunked ages ago.

            https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-04-09/spacex-co…

@mooney: Do you trust the legacy mainstream media?

              • +4

@Optimus Subprime: Ha ha ha h ah ah a

I would say these days I review a spectrum of news/ social/ opinion and form an opinion on what seems to most believable.

There seems to be a billion articles outlining that starlink is being funded by us govt in Ukraine and musk doesn’t seem full of largesse to me. So yeah. I think he’s getting $$$.

              • -1

@Optimus Subprime: Anytime someone uses a fact its followed by - Thats fake new! :)

          • +2

@Frozensage: Even before the Pentagon contract, he was charging the top maritime plan for each terminal in Ukraine, like 4000 USD/month or so. He donated some terminals at the very start, but the rest were purchased.

        • +7

This is not an accurate account of events. If you read the reports more carefully, and without a hate-boner for Musk, the facts are as follows:

Starlink was not "turned off" during a military operation, it was disabled in all Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine long before, in compliance with international sanctions.

The Ukrainian military requested that Starlink coverage be turned on in Russian-occupied Crimea so they could use it to guide drone operations to attack naval targets in Sevastopol.

SpaceX refused to extend coverage on the grounds that:
          a) it would be in violation of international sanctions, and;
          b) it would make SpaceX complicit in a major act of war and conflict escalation, and potentially make the Starlink constellation a legitimate target for Russian attacks.

TLDR: There are plenty of legitimate reasons to dislike Musk, but this isn't one of them.

          • +5

@klaw81: I'm upvoting because someone downvoted this comment, and it has a legit place in this debate. Just because you don't like the facts, doesn't mean others shouldn't be able to see them.

          • +1

@klaw81: Doesn't change the fact he latterly said Ukraine should surrender. We know who's side he is on and before anyway states he only said that to end the WAR… Russia is gearing up for its next conflict after Ukraine. Its whole economy is in a wartime footing and its not changing anytime soon.

            • @vid_ghost:

Doesn't change the fact he latterly said Ukraine should surrender

I disagree with Musk's "expediency" stance on Ukraine, but I don't believe he's "on Russia's side" on the basis of those tweets.

That said, his opinion about the direction on US foreign policy is only slightly more relevant than yours or mine, so I don't see why anyone cares. He doesn't have any real political influence.

My point was simply that the narrative about Musk disabling Starlink to sabotage Ukraine's war efforts is demontrably and unequivocally false, and we can't have a proper discussion while people continue to twist the truth (or simply make stuff up) to suit their narrative.

              • +1

                @klaw81:

I disagree with Musk's "expediency" stance on Ukraine, but I don't believe he's "on Russia's side" on the basis of those tweets.

He did a number of anti-Ukrainian tweets (like mocking Zelenskiy or repeating the russian propaganda messages), but I don't remember a single one with the same attitude towards russia.

              • -1

@klaw81: His opinion matters more then most people as he has more influence then he should.

          • @klaw81: Accurate

      • +4

There was something about launching starlink earlier to interfere with the Russians launching a similar competing service to starlink. Just like how he “invented” the hyperloop which was never going to work, to prevent a decline in car sales in California, the largest market for Tesla, when other infrastructure was being proposed to link LA with San Francisco.

    • -5

unless you've interacted with him on a personal basis, I doubt you truly know the man.

it's likely if you net out all his actions, he's probably done more good than bad.

        • +6

lol. Now tell us how iconic the Cybertruck is. And that everyone who thinks it is a POS is wrong.

Twitter gives direct insight into this guy's unedited thoughts. He is the luckiest racist (profanity) and con artist of all time.

        • -1

Racist? Lazy baseless attack isn’t it?

          • +9

@EitherWayUp: It was a headline and advertisers quit twitter over it:
            https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/white-house-labels-elon-…

His posts have gotten much, much worse since then.

            • -4

              @prodrome:

              It was a headline

Lol. So you first said "Twitter gives direct insight into this guy's unedited thoughts", then when prompted for something to support you crazy claims you produce a 'headline' piece from the media? You seriously thought that was a good comeback?

Why is everyone with a different opinion is always rAcIsT or sExIsT etc are you that incapable of presenting a logical argument?

              • +7

@1st-Amendment: You're clearly not very bright, so I will type slower in future.

                • +2

@prodrome: I see you avoided answering any of my questions, as expected…

                  • +2

@1st-Amendment: There is nothing stopping you reading his twitter posts yourself.

                    • +2

@prodrome: You made the claim, yet can't provide a shred of evidence to support it. As expected…

                    • -1

@prodrome: It's quite telling that the SBS article doesn't include a link to the twitter posts. Imagine readers verifying the accuracy of the article themselves. The horror!

                      • +2

@Mr Plow: OMG, you can visit twitter and read his posts or google and read one of 1000 articles published anywhere. You can also watch his interview telling advertisers to go (profanity) themselves on youtube if you like. He is obviously high af in that interview.

        • let's base people's personality on their X posts. great.

      • +4

Elon-stans are the funniest. You know he's not gonna love you back, right? No matter how hard to you work at it?

    • -3

      Oh bugger off

    • +2

Thanks for your opinion. Do you have any thoughts on the deal (book)?

    • So you haven't read the book then?

    • +1

      Elon Musk thinks

You can read minds? You must be rich and have lots of women!

It's either that or you bought into the BS. I wonder which one is closer to reality…

    • not to mention the class action law suits when he was ceo of paypal

    • Why don't we go and help all the nations in the world that already have established dictatorships? NATO said they wouldn't move in on the Ukraine. What's so important about that nation, I seem to think you have no idea.
Musk wishes to be a dictator? What? What evidence do you have of this? The last thing he wishes to do is suppress information, which is the hallmark of a dictatorship.
He wants Trump back in? Well, what was better when Trump was president, what has been worse? Tip, it may be dangerous for a idealogue like yourself to face this question. That's if you can actually see beyond a politician's face / what comes out of his/her mouth and delve at all into policy.

    • Ukraine is going to collapse soon, probably this year with hundreds of thousands of their men killed for what?

So the USA retains military hegemony.

      Didn't work.

      • For what? Globalist and political / financial gain.
Ukraine always represented a perfect nation to launder money, hopelessly corrupt at the best of times. It's been nothing but an exercise of stealing hard working people's tax money and resource (gas) control. Biden has done his job.

    • His an anti vaxxer.

No he isn't. You've posted complete bullshit and 23 others have upvoted your bullshit.

Musk is covid vaccinated and said in a tweet: "To be clear, I do support vaccines in general & covid vaccines specifically."

He also said "mandates for the masses are an 'erosion of freedom'" which is 100% accurate.

      • Uhh.. so we ignore all the other things he said questioning covid vaccines?

        https://www.forbes.com/sites/anafaguy/2023/07/26/elon-musk-s…

        • Uhhh… didn't read your link, but if you're suggesting "asking questions" about covid vaccines or anything else in life is some sort of intellectual crime, then you're doing it wrong. By "doing it wrong" I mean living as an intelligent human, using your innate ability to think, learn, discuss and rationalise.

  • +13

I wouldn’t read it even if you paid me

    • I wonder what a book about Yuppieshrink would be like.

  • +11

If the book doesn't paint Musk as a raging moron, the book hasn't done its job.

  • +2

Why would anyone want to spend their valuable time reading about another humans life - especially this one?

    • +7

Why would anyone want to spend their valuable time reading about another humans life

Because some humans are smarter than others and you can learn things from them of value. Obviously not you of course, you are too smart for that, you clearly know everything so don't need to learn anything. When is your book coming out?

      • -2

        ….Rhetorical question…

Obviously clearly definitely you’re smarter than me. I’m not smart like you and that’s ok.

Oh, my several books (on topics that matter) has been out and are read by many - but one wouldn’t know that via a random username on ozbargain ;)

        • Ah, the old "I've published several successful books" comeback by anonymous user.

        • -1

          Man you got owned 😂

    I like Elon Musk

    • +4

I like some of his conpanies.. the battery plants are a good idea. The man hinself though. Hmm.. not for everyone :)

      • +5

        conpanies

        • "conpanies"

Wait. Did you just think of that? Please tell us your creative process for inventing this supreme wordplay?

The intellectual horsepower around here is staggering. I guess you've written "several successful books" so your command of English gives you the talent to break the rules with such stinging eloquence.

Thank you for your service. I am but a student of the master wordsmiths.

          • @cerealJay: Mitch McConnell’s sister-in-law drowned after accidentally reversing Tesla into ranch pond first responders unable to get it out in time to save her life. I would never buy a Tesla

Its warranty is literally a subscription plan.

            • +1

@vid_ghost: LOL, are you for real?

You want your electric car to babysit you even after driving it drunk (0.233 blood alcohol) into a pond, fully submerged? What are you expecting the car to do? Switch to submarine mode and auto-drive your drunken arse back to shore?

The woman died because she drove drunk into a pond. Doors are difficult to open against water pressure even in normal cars until pressure equalises - meaning the car is full of water. First responders didn't arrive for 20 minutes after she went in, and they were deputies, not divers.

              Stop posting bullshit.

            • @vid_ghost: This woman's death had absolutely nothing to do with what type of car she was driving.

She backed into the pond because she was very drunk. She was able to phone for help but seems to have made little effort to extricate herself from the vehicle (probably also because she was drunk). People found it difficult to rescue her due to the darkness and the steepness of the embankment adjacent to the pond.

Rescue crews took over 20 minutes to arrive on the scene, by which time the car had sunk. They broke a window to gain access to the car, which is very common in underwater vehicle rescue because water pressure makes the doors impossible to open.

Its warranty is literally a subscription plan.

This statement is just plain false, and utterly without justification.

      • The network of superchargers was nice as well.

  • +2

He's totally flipped . Maybe FSB invoked . 12 kids I think ? Possible suicide case . Seagal is looking very unhealthy in Moscow also . etc etc

    • +6

      I think you need help

    Snake oil salesman

He's been buying and claiming other people's inventions as his own - eg nuerolink . Nah thanks OP.

  • +8

“I would only read this book if I were his competitor; otherwise, he is an idiot, and I mean it.”

  • -2

    Fascist

    • -1

      Idiotic statement.

Do you even know what fascist means?

The reality is that he helped spark the EV revolution and is doing more positive for the world right now than any other person and most governments.

I do not agree with everything he says or does not say, but history will prove that he will help solve climate change, bring affordable internet to billions across the world, and save lives on the road.

People will hate just because it's the fashionable thing to do. Generally the left wing morons.

        • +1

Thunderf00t and common sense skeptic channels are very good.

If you want more detailed timeline of how Elon”made it” check out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Acx_n2WfYM The Modern Snake Oil Salesman - Elon Musk

Agent Q, you are misinformed. Elon will be known in history of a fraudster, and the biggest failure in history.

          • +1

@Crownanchor: yeah, but you have to be careful watching some of Thunderf00t's stuff, he can be quite selective in the information chosen to ensure he more 'dramatically' shows the narrative he's intending.

for the most part his stuff is good, but there's a lot of 'this thing affected ONE person badly' type statements where realistically, 'this thing benefitted MILLIONS of people, with a very small percentage having issues' would be the correct statement to make……..

he's no where near as bad as that Jordan Peterson guy…whom at first glance seems to be sensible, but on further watching is a little unhinged

          • +3

@Crownanchor: Thunderfoot is an absolute joke. His style of "journalism" is roughly equivalent to News Corp - he's primarily an entertainer with an agenda. He starts with the conclusion that he wants, and then cherry-picks facts to support it without any semblance of balance.

Also, he has a blind hatred of Musk makes him utterly unreliable on any subject related to the industries he's involved with

        • +2

thunderf00t and common sense skeptic are terrible. If you've not been brainwashed by their videos, you'll eventually realise they only do this to profit from your hate.
          https://littlebluena.substack.com/p/thunderf00t-busted

        • -1

          Great video :)

      • +2

Probably not, it’s a catch all word used by the heavily misinformed. As you said, far left morons.

      • If he can solve climate change maybe he could solve world hunger too?

      • -6

I know what a fascist is and thats exactly what he is

        • +4

would you care to elaborate then because I don't think you really do.

Facism: often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

It's fine to call Elon Musk, a d*ckhead, but he is not a facist.

          • -4

@Agent Q: You sound like you know everything,

            • +4

@Tsapena: And you sound like you know nothing.

If you say he is a facist, explain it.

              • -6

@Agent Q: I dont need to explain anything to you.
Do your own research if you dont know what fascism is…lol

                • +1

@Tsapena: Clearly, you have no idea what you are talking about

                  Fascist this fascist that.

Everyone you don't like is a fascist.

                  Good luck.
