Netflix Rises Prices. Corporate Greed Strikes Again

First they stop password sharing. Now prices of all plans have increased. PSA for those who may not be aware of this as it's on their website. Price hikes are higher for more expensive plans, with the 4K plan now costing an extra $3 a month ($36 per year), 1080P no ads $2, and ads plan $1.

  • Ad plan: Previously $6.99, Now $7.99
  • 1080P no ads plan: Previously $16.99, Now $18.99
  • 4K plan: Previously $22.99, Now $25.99

A lot of people are talking about Stremio + RealDebrid, would be curious how it compares to a Sonarr + Radarr + Bazarr setup, with torrenting via a VPN.

Edit: lack of an Apple TV app will be my issue, current setup + Plex it is.

    who cares? read a book

  • GamsGo works well ~$6 p/month for 4K. No complaints.

    • How long have you been using for?

    • Using the same thing but only 1 household so I always have to update the ā€œhouseholdā€ every time I want to watch something cos itā€™s shared with another 4 other GamsGo users. Annoying but better than paying full price.

      • How does that work?? Thinking of buying one for me

    I have an alternative
    1. Buy this https://bufferstock.com.au/product/lenovo-thinkcentre-m710q-tiny-pc-intel-i5-6400t-6th-gen-2-2ghz-8gb-ram-128gb-ssd-win-10/#iLightbox[product-gallery]/3
    2. Buy a hdmi cable and an air mouse
3 Plug and play your favourite shows. Many websites are available to stream 1*10^8 shows

edit: you can do many things with this system. VPN etc. Ubuntu linux etc. But i cbb. Just had to add a M.2 wifi card since i had no ethernet in the living room and works perfectly

  • I was an early subscriber with Netflix ages ago when the pricing made sense and I enjoyed so much content. Now the quality is just average and you have to have like 5 subscriptions and can't buy the content you actually like with physical media…..
I went to torrenting and never looked back. In my infuse app, everything unites again.

You can buy a Kite on Amazon/ebay etc for about the same price as 1 month of netflix. I gurantee you the benefit and fulfillment to your life from going outside to a park, flying a kite, touching some grass will be 100 fold sitting at home watching the utter trash that is served up on Netflix, or really any of the streaming services.

    • can you fly a kite at night? winter is coming

I am really quite surprised they are going for another price hike, not because I underestimate their greed BUT. With cost of living being front and centre, a price rise now puts the sub service in the firing line, I expect this may have a significant impact on sub numbers or at least hurt growth. Deferring this till interest rates fall would seem more sensible to avoid being in the spot light for all the wrong reasons.

    • People always say that after every price increase and Netflix generally records increased profit and increased subscriber numbers after that. The last time they recorded decreased subscribers they decided to crackdown on password sharing and then saw subscribers go back up after that.

      • its a little different this time though, from all reports people are targeting their sub services as a way to pair back their spending and putting yourself in the cross hairs of people looking to save money seems a little non sensical to me. I guess time will tell. The password crackdown was always going to be a very temporary impact and only targetted a very small section of the subscriber base.

  • Time to sail the high seas!

    • I never got into any of these streaming services with the exception of Prime Video because it comes with Amazon Prime membership šŸ¦œšŸ“ā€ā˜ ļø

Netflix was so much better before they offered it to Australians. Could set up a VPN and enjoy so much content for cheap. Ah, the good old days.

What really sh*ts me with Netflix pricing (apart from the price increases) is that the plans link the number of devices to the resolution. Ie if you want the 4K+HDR streaming, you get 4 devices, if you get HD streaming you get 2 devices. I want the 4K+HDR, but I only need 2 devices (only 2 people in my house). I used to share one of the extras with my mum who was in a nursing home, but now she's passed away (before the password sharing crackdown would have put an end to that anyway). There needs to be flexibility with the plans so you can mix and match the quality and number of devices you want.

Iā€™m on the (discontinued) $10.99 plan and thought I was safe from their price hike, but have just received an email today saying itā€™s going up to $12.99

    • Noooo

    • Is the discontinued $10.99 plan full hd or is it 720p? I never signed up to this plan but wish i did before they removed it.

      • 720p.. which Iā€™m not too fussed about as long as I can watch ad-free, though I suspect they will scrap it entirely very soon.

        • +2

That's the biggest reason to keep the plan and hope Netflix doesn't scrap it. The ad-free benefit is crucial. If they are increasing the price to $12.99 then i reckon you are good for a few years before they might consider scrapping it.

I wish I signed up to it before. Now I am on the ads plan and i hate the ads but the next plan up is too expensive for us.

          Hold on to that plan!!

          • @Monty1089: Hahaa I agree!! But how bad are the ads really? Iā€™m just preparing myself for the day when they kick me off my current plan and I have to downgrade, as I canā€™t justify paying nearly $20 for the next plan up lol..

            • +1

@swanzilla: So we normally watch movies playing Indian but some American movies and the ads are usually 30 seconds long. Some are back to back so 60 seconds in total. You can have up to 8-10 ads throughout the length of the 2 hour or longer movie.

It's not bad but having that ad free plan even at $12.99 is so much better. Plus you also get access to more movies and tv shows if you have the ad-free plan.

Either way i am not paying for the next plan at almost $20 a month.

              • +1

@Monty1089: So thatā€™s roughly 60 secs of ads every 25-30 mins, itā€™s not horrible but if youā€™re not used to ads I guess it can get pretty frustrating. I watch a bit of Tubi TV and SBS on Demand sometimes, so having ads arenā€™t that foreign to me, but I donā€™t have to pay for them unlike Netflix lol.

I also forgot that you donā€™t get access to the full library under the ads plan, which I think is just ridiculous. How much do they restrict would you say? Do they lock the newer contents?

                • +1

@swanzilla: I am not sure how long until you get an ad. I need to keep an eye out when we next watch a movie. But around 10 ads i say. Some are only 30 seconds and others are 2 lots of 30 seconds back to back. Less ads during tv shows. I sometimes get the ad during the start of a tv show then middle and towards the end. In a movie it is spaced out. I usually don't get an ad during the start when watching a movie.

Yeah I heard you don't get the full library with the ads plan. I haven't run into any issues with finding content. But there are stuff missing which is only available on the full ad-free plans.

                  • @Monty1089: Thanks for sharing your experience! Hopefully you're not missing out much of the contents you'd like to see anyways.

Time to walk and sail the high seas.

Netflix is just taking the piss these days.

  • Dont forget to talk about how they killed the vpn deal. Havent subbed for it since. I suggest people stop as well because the prices will keep going up.

  • They will keep hiking prices until there subscriber numbers drop significantly.

  • have they stopped password sharing? i swear it still works for friends who use it with friends that i know? i thought they stopped sharing too but i know for a fact its still happening

    • there are solutions

      • mates do it just with sharing the password. not much solution in that.

        • How? It now detects when youā€™re using a different internet connection.

        • +1

Netflix detects different IP addresses from different households so the device then needs to be authorised on the main IP address network, unless they are running it on mobile devices, the solutions to bypass all this are bit more sophisticated

Just got at email from Amazon, they're also introducing ads, unless you pay more for ad free

      • Cheers. Sure the timing is not a coincidence. 85% increase in just over a year

    • Yeah I just got that email at almost the exact same time as the Netflix price increase one. It's like they're actually competing to see which can be the one to get the chop.

  • Just checked my account. It looks like whatever plan you are on, they have not increased the monthly price of that plan for you, and increased the rates of other plans as mentioned in the post. So, next time you switch to a different plan, you pay the new price. Possibly they will also increase the price of the current plan after a set time (possibly during next auto renewal)

    An update on Prime Video.
    ā€Š
    Dear Prime member,

We are writing to you today about an upcoming change to your Prime Video experience. Starting July 2, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership. We will also offer a new ad free option for an additional A$2.99 per month* that you can sign up for here.

    • +1

Morally I don't see anything wrong with downloading non ad-ridden versions of Prime shows if you're already a subscriber. I mute all forced advertising and just look at stuff on my phone on the very rare occasion I have to watch an ad on whatever platform I'm on.

    • I had just paid my Prime Annual fee and they dropped this a couple of days later. I may have withdrawn my subscription had I known. Feels like bait and switch to be honest.

  • Yeah. I dumped them. Signed up before they were in Australia but now they (like every other streaming platform) are taking advantage of their customers.

  • +1

Don't get me started on YouTube premiums increase a couple of months ago from $17.99 to $32.99 for the family plan.

    • Jees, travel to another country for that one!

    • VPN is your friend ;)

    • Just put up with ads.

  • I have been sharing a 4 screen 4K pack between two households for a very long time until it was blocked early last year.

Subsequently jumped onto the Turkey Netflix bandwagon and got about 9 months with that before that was cut back in February.

We only need 2 screens (one for each household), but 4K and Spatial Audio are both handy features. Unfortunately, Netflix paywalls these features behind their top package when most households don't need 4 screens, they just want 4K.

It's quite hilarious, their content is dwindling further but they want to charge $25.99. Sorry, but I won't be paying $25.99 x2

Crazy to think that Foxtel is now better value when you consider people are paying $50-60 for Movies and Live Sport.

  • Being unsubscribed for two years now. Good luck Netflix

  • +2

I think there is an easy workaround for anyone who still wants to share Netflix: Tailscale, or NordVPN Meshnet or similar.
Those are free, and should be a relatively easy to set up a VPN between you and the main Netflix household. Not a privacy VPN, but more like a work VPN, that makes you appear to be on the same network.

I can't test myself (switched to Stremio), and there are guides, but the idea would be along the lines that you install it somewhere on their network, and then on your device, and route your Netflix through it.
Then your device will appear to be physically inside their house, and you won't be blocked.
And you might actually be getting Netflix uploaded from their house, so hope they have fast upload speeds

I got rid of Netflix and to be honest itā€™s not been an issue at all. Often I would spend more time just trying to find something to watch.

There are plenty of other things to do and enjoy than watching Netflix. I find watching YouTube videos on topics Iā€™m interested in more usefulness, enjoyable and cheaper.

  • Is there a cheaper alternative for live sports that includes NRL?
