      • I did. I used my phone and went to the registered household to play a video. The moment i go back to my own home, it shows me im not at the registered household. Needless to say, my TV doesnt work too as i am unable to carry it there.

This method used to work. And it will ask if im travelling and if i click Yes, it will send a 2FA to my mum and i can unlock my profile. It doesnt give me the option now.

          Your mum sold you out

          • @loropy9: Got caught by Netflix and in Netflix goal now.

If you are both using AppleTV you can install Tailscale on both and set up your AppleTV as an exit node. Then your mum’s Netflix use will look like it’s coming from your house. It’s super simple to do.

      • I did this w.ith Wireguard before I closed my account.

    • A workaround seems to be using a laptop or PC to login to Netflix, you can watch it on the computer or cast it through to the TV. At first it was working on mobile, then that stopped but I just tested now and the PC/laptop is still working for some reason (Firefox). Worth a try anyway.

    I haven't.

Why is jv getting so many negative votes? These are good questions he is raising which aren’t mentioned by OP, I also haven’t heard of changes to the pricing of my Netflix.
Is it just fun to blindly down vote everything jv does now?

      • +1

Because people have been conditioned to hit [-] when they see jv and bold text.

When I log into my account, I see the following prices available:

    Standard with ads $7.99
    Standard $16.99
    Premium $25.99

    • +1

New customers and new plans only right now. You can see the higher price on the premium option on your screenshot. You'll probably get a comms towards the start of your next cycle and the new price will likely kick in after that cycle, at least according to the news article I was reading.

Well, I happily watched Bridgerton tonight on the 🏴‍☠️ plan so Netflix be damned!

  • +15

I would just like to thank everyone who actually pay for Netflix. Baby Reindeer and 3 Body Problem are great…

Netflix are running a zero sum game. They need prices to increase to pay for the service, but people will jump off and turn back to piracy, so the load will need to be spread across the remaining few users, who will in turn leave, go back to piracy, and we’ll, you get the point.

Paid streaming services are just the new “cable tv” model. It’s now way too fractured and I’m not coughing up for 12 different streaming services…

    • +6

I just move subscription’s regularly. Which everything I’m interested in on one, then cancel that and change to another. When combined with deals it works out very affordable but still contributing for the shows to be made. I’d only ever be paying for one at a time if any.

    • +2

      "…remaining few users…"
You mean like >90% of people.

I’ve thought this for a couple of years now, when I realised I was paying for at least 4 different services. I added it up and found we watch most of our content through ABC and SBS so all but one were cancelled (which, ironically, is Netflix).

I am surprised people are still with Netflix. When Netflix first launched here in 2015, I was excited like most of us and joined them in May 2015 on their basic $9.99 plan with no ads back then. As it was going well, I upgraded my TV and decided to go for their mid-tier plan of $13.99 and subsequently to 4K premium plan $17.99 in 2018. But when greed got in and within a year and they increased my plan to $19.99, I decided I had enough and cancelled my plan. I was bit apprehensive about my decision then, but now if I look back, looks like it was the best decision.

  • This is just adding to my post Baby Reindeer trauma.

  • +4

i'm with Prime and even that is way more than enough I can consume with the limited time to sit and do nothing.

Some of you must have way too much free time.

As for the price increase, just give them the bird.

    • +1

I totally agree, I learnt this during lockdowns to spend more time with family than to sit and binge watch paid mind numbing stuff, so I cancelled all my subscriptions in 2021. After we quit watching the black mirror and spending our free time with family/extended family/friends and "nature", our lives has changed in the best possible ways in all areas.

    • Prime at least has a discounted annual subscription option, and includes a 24/7 finance channel and free shipping so it was easily worth it to me, especially with Fallout, Wheels of Time and Expanse. Netflix has still got me for now though with some good recent shows and a fairly steady feed of solid documentaries that seem to drop just as I start thinking about cancelling

      • yup, prime video is complete crap from the poor content to the abysmal controls but it is effectively free as I pay for the shipping, otherwise it doesn't have enough content to justify more than a week or so a year of sub.

  • All the good things must come to an end.

  • +2

Membership for ~15 years, paying in TR in the last years, then Netflix cancelled my subscription and wouldn't accept any non-TR payment method. I don't watch Netflix a lot and couldn't justify paying the Australian price.

I still have AU Amazon Prime, Disney and Max (these last two from overseas, used with VPN) and don't miss Netflix. Stremio is always an option too, very stable and affordable.

    • Just got an email, Amazon introducing ads or pay an extra $2.99 / month for ad free!

      • +1

I saw. That's pretty bad. They might still have me because of the free delivery and other prime benefits, but I might have to watch Amazon's series on Stremio from now on (not watching anything there currently).

I actually had Amazon "free" via Amex Platinum.

  • I just discovered that AGL has a Netflix Plan:

    https://www.agl.com.au/residential/energy/compare-plans?cide…

Don't know if the plan is good value, but we had Netflix a couple of years ago and dropped it because the content was mostly rubbish.

    • At $84 a year value I guess that was the ad plan. Now $96 a year in value :)

      • +1

Says $96 and ad plan when you expand the menu.

        • Ah yep, they need to update the intro bit..

  • +7

Yo ho yo ho it’s a pirates life for me.

  • If no one pays or and they don’t get enough revenue, eventually we won’t get the content. Some has to pay for the shows to get made.

Everything costs more - just as wages go up - so does all costs.
BUT at what point does profit suddenly turn into greed ? what is the magic % that people seem to know as they throw the word 'Greed' around ?

  • +5

Stremio+RealDebrid = This is the way.

    • +1

For the few, not everyone. Someone's gotta pay the bills on the other side, otherwise there'll be nothing to watch with Stremio+RealDebrid.

Of course, the more they increase prices the more people will leave, reducing revenue, causing them to raise prices again in a vicious circle…

Eventually they'll have to provide service a la Spotify (yes, or RealDebrid but trying to use a legal example here), one service to stream everything or they will drive themselves to the ground. Mind you, Spotify has just increased prices also after 6 months I think from the last.

      • I personally keep Amazon prime video up for this reason, even thoug I don't even have it installed in my tv

And yes if there was a legal service like spotify for movies and shows, Id be happy to subscribe - I'd say a service like that would be fair for 40-50 dollar a month, if there's absolutely every movie or show ever created. Id pay even more probably..

        • +1

Yeh I have Prime but anything I watch from there I still do so via alternative sources. I get a better and more consistent experience.
Prime app loves to keep downgrading the quality as I watch despite me having plenty of bandwidth. Louis Rossmann had a nice rant over the paid vs pirate experience.

I don't like the interface much either. After so many years of Kodi (going back to the XBMC days, and myHTPC before that) it's so ingrained it's hard for me to switch to anything else now. Even Stremio I don't like much (and it's one way Trakt syncing is not very useful either). Fen Light integrates everything nicely with Kodi though.

          • +1

@bamzero: for the life of me I can't stand Kodi. It's just so buggy and unintuitive. Repositories need constant updates. And the user intercace is horrible. I tried and I tried, many times. Everytime I give up because of how user unfriendly is. Stremio on the other end is so easy my mum can use it with nearly no instructions. So I am not looking back to Kodi anytime soon

            • @liongalahad: Default skin is ugly as, Arctic Zephyr Reloaded skin definitely. Widgets set up to show posters of recently added stuff, and Next Episodes from Fen Light to show same for the latest available unwatched presents most commonly played stuff up front.

I run android tv boxes as the clients, with a MySQL backend to keep them all synced (for the local stuff) and Trakt handles the watched and episode progress for Fen.

I haven't had to manually update a repository or add-on for can't remember how long (apart from Youtube every now and again when I need the latest beta to workaround the constant struggle with Google.) I assuming you mean some of the more questionable repositories though I never really used those, everything was local prior to RealDebrid apart from FTA catchup. Those addons make watching catchup stuff actually usable (every now and again at the in-laws and using the default catch-up apps drives me crazy, the amount of ads. Missus uses them to watch Masterchef and the odd show sometimes.

Stremio has it's uses, but I just find Kodi works better for me (at least more customisable to how I like things). It is handy to have on my phone though which isn't something I'd do with Kodi.

        • Starting July 2, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements.

          There goes another one…

  • +4

You're the fool if you are still using these services.

As others have said, stremio+realdebrid and you are sorted.

Edit: as someone else has said, if people didn't pay we wouldnt have new content. So people should keep using netflix etc. It's for the best if you do.

  • I think I used to pay $4.99 US a bit over a decade ago. And I’m sure the library was way bigger. I got it mainly for house of cards from what I recall. But I also watched plenty of other stuff. The pushing of ads was what made me seek out alternatives. Like stremio plus real debrid is basically like the Netflix of pirating. The one thing Netflix had over piracy was it simplicity. The low effort is what drew people in and probably will keep people subscribing. But once stremio is set up it’s just as easy and arguably better quality and don’t require multiple applications to access most things.

  • If only movie studios just allowed people to download their releases at a reasonable price…. wouldn't that be better than someone downloading it for free?

  • The usual blah blah about piracy, and yet there are plenty of people who still pay for it because they consider the cost of an individual service worth it - the rest are only worth binging now and then.

  • Does anyone know how to install Stremio app on a Google TV from the Play Store? It says it's not available in Australia. Can you use a VPN to work around this, or do you have to change your country in your Google profile?

    • thats so weird. It shows as available on the Playstore on my phone and tv
Try installing Sideload Launcher first , then through it open the Google Playstore and search for stremio. It should be there.

      • Yeah it's a bit odd… could be because I'm on an Indian version for my Youtube Premium, wonder if that could be why.

      • Yep just confirmed, because of my YouTube premium in India. Made a fake account and all fine now.

        • +1

Can someone share a website or a link that has a step by step guide in simple language on how to use Stremio Real Debrid? I am done with Netflix prices increases.

  • Paying half that through turkey!

  • Netflix has just under a 19% profit net margin compare that to Woolworth who have been in the media lately for price gouging with less than a 3% net profit margin.

The greediest of all countires to do business with is the United States but somehow they never get bad PR for it?

    • not really comparable totally different businesses / business models

      • Nah, see, because Woolworths sells Netflix cards.
Clearly it's an accurate, direct, and well thought out comparison between business models and operating profit margins.

        • +1

          sorry clearly my mistake

      • -1

Way to go ….You missed the entire point of the post…. it is one gets labelled price gougers and the other no one talks about

Some of the US tech companies have 40-50% net margins google has more than that and it would probably almost be considered an essential service by how widely it is used.

        • -1

I get it, your comparison wasn't great, there are plenty of companies out there with margins in the hundreds even thousands, including in Australia. Apple has huge margins but there again a simple fuse in Jaycar at $3 which is purchased in bulk for cents is an example

          • @Irishness: My issue is one is getting a grilling the other no onencares about it probably says more about how poorly we are governed in Australia

In which we are happy to attack local businesses thay employ people opposed to those absolutely ripping us off and hiring almost no one

            • @Trying2SaveABuck: I disagree Colesworth business model is low margin but that hasn't stopped them from raising prices to make bigger profits & also squeezing suppliers they deserve the bad PR. Netflix is not a necessity, groceries are & Colesworth are using inflation etc as an excuse to increase many prices by more. Not saying politicians aren't paying politics with it though

              • -3

                @Irishness: What is the alternative?

                We have 4 players

Aldi kind of a cheaper but less varity option

IGA - independent way more expensive

Coles and Woolworths kind of the same super convenient? Large network for stores

Im not saying suppliers dont get squeezed but they have the supply network kind of how Google rips off businesses using its platform - tell me that isn't the same thing? Too me it is exactly the same id argue Google is much worse and far more evil

Tell me what's a better alternative?

All it is the government's playing politics to pass the buck on mis management and a system that has become anti business. The entire economy is built of inflated property and digging stuff out the ground. Blame the government not those who have managed to make it work for them

The morons down voting or disagreeing are the same one saying we should keep albo in to pump up the min wage which is why your groceries ar so expensive….don't believe the current SDA offer to Woolworths stuff for 3 years is a 0% increase …. yes ZERO

We either what a low cost of living but low and no skilled work is paod bad or a high cost of living and low skilled workers are over paid making it harder for businesses

                • -1

@Trying2SaveABuck: they weren't always like this but as time has gone on they have adopted practices from overseas to stifle competition, extract the most money often at the detriment of others etc. Government needs to grow a spine & do something as does the ACCC etc so incentivize other players, break up the duopoly if necessary & crack down on the bad practices but they won't it'll continue. I'm not disagreeing with your other points but like I said often it's not in good/services that are a necessity. The big Googles & co of this world are just smarter with big pockets than most governments

                  • -2

@Irishness: Fair enough - im not sure what practices they have adopted. So you might be right.
Still think 2.6% net margin isnt anything to investigate. Any changes will likely make things worse for consumers and/or workers but you seem to know more i than do so il leave it there

Flogs moaning about Netflix being unessential fair enough think a little deeper - Resmed rocks a 25% net profit margin…..Pfizer is 21% life saving vaccines is ok to extort people off? Cpap units that people need to live no issues?

I could go on but the standard outrage merchants on here commenting (not you OP but a few others) clearly cant think for themselves about how the world works

    • Netflix has just under a 19% profit net margin compare that to Woolworth who have been in the media lately for price gouging with less than a 3% net profit margin. The greediest of all countires to do business with is the United States but somehow they never get bad PR for it?

      What are you on about?

Woolworths is selling food that is literally required for survival. Netflix is selling an unnecessary product that everyone can survive without. How are they remotely comparable?

      • That can be said for anything, just look at what it costs to produce some life savings medicine like insulin, epipen etc and the retail cost after, even after R&D costs are long paid.

  • It's funny I keep receiving netflix emails begging me to resubscribe, but no email informing me of pricing increases.

The 4K non-sharing account is still what, 3 espresso coffees from a cafe so I don't see why people complaining /s

  • Probably an unpopular opinion, but stop getting addicted to shitty, low-quality, low-IQ content that is meaningless and just rotting your brain.

The idea of reeling you in, then marking up the prices over time is the hallmark of every addictive scheme designed to scam and rort you - casinos, tobacco, this is just the next thing.

If you're bored, find more meaningful hobbies, spend time with your family, learn a new skill, read a book, play a musical instrument, reconnect with old friends, go for a walk, literally anything other than being addicted to mindless trash and paying for the privilege.
