ISP's Doing Credit Checks When You Sign up Month to Month

Hey all, it appears not only electricity companies, but now NBN companies are performing hard credit enquiries when you sign up

Anyone else experienced this recently?

What’s with month-to-month providers doing credit checks?

I believe Launtel, Leaptel and Aussie BB don't do credit checks for nbn.

  • the expensive ones, how convenient hahaha

I was mainly curious about Superloop, Pronto Broadband, Exetel, Dodo, Tangerine in this case

seems churning to cheap providers could have a downside, depending on the type of credit enquiry performed

    • Tangerine, Dodo, Superloop and Exetel might do a credit check. I'm not sure about Pronto.

    • Exetel T&Cs say they do
Superloop T&Cs say they do, but they never did for me

    Does it really matter?

  • North Queensland monopoly electricity supplier does a marriage check!

    • That's because they don't want to encourage defactos into using electricity.

      • it is their LEFT fraction!!

        • Is it an improper fraction?

    • They’re checking if there’s still a spark in the relationship

      • yep because they have a spark subsidy if you get to the right lobby group!

  • Who cares?

    • turning the light off is against their business model!

  • well if your a churner and you take a few hits to your credit score because of this, then in some cases new providers can deny you a service because they simply look at your credit score without understanding why its now low.

Does your credit score matter? What is it used for?

Credit scores aren’t used in Australia. Your point is baseless.

Ahh, yes they most certainly are used in Australia, if you ever want a credit card or a bank loan or a house morgage you need a decent credit score.

  • Recently signed up to Exetel from Tangerine, neither did a credit check on my account.

    • thanks mate, was this Equifax report you checked after signing up?

      • Credit Savvy

        • it is experian then

    • You might find Exetel (Superloop) performed one under Equifax though possibly

few people don't really think credit scores seem to matter, that's the vibe I am seeing here

that's fine, each to their own, it does matter though when you are refinancing, applying for credit, signing up to a new utility provider.

not sure why people think it doesn't matter

    • Can you explain why it matters if someone checks your credit history and sees that you changed internet providers?

      • The context behind me making this post, is simply because I had been on an Excellent Rating with Equifax, and was dropped down to Good in only couple of months because I had 3 utility provider enquiries on my report in a short space of time

I want to avoid lowering my score any further hence why I am curious what ISP do credit checks and against which credit reporting bodies

Surely the issue is not a provider checking if their customer they are supplying "credit" to in the form of an unsecured debt but the format the credit score is generated if it is being adversely affected by someone doing a credit check? Kinda feels like the post should be "Why does a credit score get affected by getting a new suppler?".

    • Obviously a few of this sites users either without a job or living at home with parents or still students etc, then sure it doesn't matter unless you want a loan or credit card etc.
But then even with a good credit score low income earners will struggle to get loans anyway as you need income to pay them back. So its a bit of a catch 22 type situation.

  • I signed up with Tango (Tangerine) 2 odd years ago and churned to Superloop last month.

Superloop nor Tango (Tangerine) did a credit check with either Equifax or Credit Savvy in the last 3 years.

    The utility companies did.

I checked because I lost my driver's licence card so wanted to confirm no one has been applying for credit under my name.

I also found out that I have an 'EXCELLENT' credit rating with both Equifax and Credit Savvy

    • You can check your Illion credit report, Superloop is most likely there based on their privacy policy

      https://www.superloop.com/privacy-policy/

      • I just checked Illion for fun and also check since I lost my driver's licence card.

It showed a BNPL enquiry a couple of years ago but to Superloop.

  • It's just an enquiry

    • The only ones I am aware of that do actual hard checks on your credit score is Telstra.
Maybe Optus as well as they previously would make you sign really long contracts to be with them. I believe Telstra still do credit checks even though they don't do contracts anymore.

  • I’ve been bouncing between SL and Exetel (with the occasional month with ABB) over the last 3 years or so and haven’t had any credit checks with either in that time.

  • As a regular churner of RSPs, only Superloop has done a credit check.
