    All this talk of churn… how much time is wasted switching ISP's every few months?

      10 minutes at most and maybe another 5 minutes to change the router settings if needed. You don’t even need to cancel. You just need to sign up with another provider online. That could save you at least $100 every 6 months. Only you can tell if it is worth your effort.
      Note: if you are on FTTP, you will want to tell your new provider to connect you on the same active port (UNI-D 1 or 2 etc) otherwise you might end up with two active services.

        Yep, I agree with how simple it can be to churn if you are on FTTP especially.

        It's pretty much as easy as porting mobile carriers, if not easier depending on your home network setup.

        How about down time? I saw the comparison with switching mobile providers, in my experience that usually involves an hour worth of down time, same with ISP?

          For a switchover to happen, several parties are involved:
          (1) NBN provisions new service on the new ISP
          (2) ISP makes their side of network available to this NBN connection
          (3) The end user changing the settings on the router for the authentication

          Depends on the technology and also ISP's internal provisioning process

          FTTP is the quickest and most reliable - when it all goes smoothly (1) and (2) can happen in under 10min. But this largely depends on the ISP's provisioning process. Some ISPs can do this in under 10min when their process is fairly automated. However not ISPs are the same - the older ISP usually take a bit longer, say up to half a day.

          Usually involves a downtime of an hour or could be longer if something goes wrong.
          If you have FTTP and can afford any downtime, you can ask the new provider to connect you on a vacant port, then you cancel your existing service after you make sure the new one works.

        The younger ISPs' signup process lets you choose if you want to do a "replacement" or "add a new service". But the older ISPs often will default to "add a new service" so need to be very careful - and a hassle to have to ring up the old ISP to cancel when that happens.

    What prevents us from changing the provider after one month? My understanding is that we can simply sign up with the new provider, and the current account will be automatically canceled. Can someone confirm this?

      Yes. Just signup with another provider and your existing connection will be cancelled.

          Yeah that can happen on nbn FTTP and nbn fixed wireless. The other nbn tech types should auto cancel.

          I recently got connected to Aussie Broadband. I request a transfer from my previous service FTTP. Aussie Broadband just connected the service to another UNI-D port.

          Everyone other provider l have used have always transfer the service instead of creating a new service. Might be easier for provider to create new service rather than transfer service.

    I'm currently with internode FTTN with a vx220 router. Was thinking of trying this free for a month then going to leaptel. Would it be much hassle to switch? (Someone mentioned that internode is pppoe and Aussie and co aren't?)

    ABB was an excellent ISP until the business was floated and the sales and marketing slime bags took over .

    Then prices went up and service quality went down.

    None of the ISPs are worth giving any customer loyalty to these days. Just check the prices every few months and churn to ensure you get the best pricing …
