Best value phone for less than $300, except when it is not.

      • +3

It's not under $300 rn.. lol, but I get what you meant..

    • +2

Seems like Motorola is starting to clear G84: may be delay your purchases & wait for BIGGER price-drop ?

      The same with G54…@ $149-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/841511

      May be 12 monthly release of NEW model ? Released month: G84 Nov-23 & G54 Sep-23.

ALSO, Telstra's Jun-24 3G shut down: others will have MORE-sales…watch this space.

      G84 vs G54: beside G84's better-screen, likely that many LOW-end users won't get much benefit from more storage & ram-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15202436/redir

For those who plan to use Motorola 'G' phones beyond 2 years, note limited Android-update & security patches…search the internet for prudent practices to minimise security-risk.

  • +2

Would buy one if it supports esim.

    • +2

hope the next model (G85/6) has it. One of the only things it's missing.

    • +3

      Reason why I bought $149 g54
      It will do for now.

      • +6

Oh no. Go buy a phone for the masses and leave the phones that still have hardware suited to music to those of us who are hard done by for choice.

    • Wow didn't know it doesn't have esim. It's 2024 $300 phone should have esim by default. No wonder G54 beats it

    • +1

You can always try 5ber. Only $12-$25 USD.

    • i swear it does? i got one for my dad the dualsim model and then realise later or i knew that the second one was dualsim esim slot… aka no slot

  • +5

Using it now. Well worth 300.

    • Is it dual nano SIM?

    • yes and has nicer screen than the g54, don’t swap carriers often so rather nice screen than esim this time around.

  • Been eyeing the poco x6 pro, but seeing this makes me want to pull the trigger.

The biggest security concern is that Motorola is Lenovo owned.

    • Plus side, is that Motorola Mobility who does all their phone work, is a 100% USA subsidiary.

The money reaches Lenovo eventually, but the software is western.

      • -1

Ewww I rather go with China than western companies lol

        • Motorlla is not the phone company for you then; since you get both with their mobile line.

The new zenfone is pretty neat if you trust Taiwan more than full PRC companies.

    • oh no, now the chinese gov will spy on me for my dissident views on tik tok, because i took my foil hat off to use the chinese made phone, while watching my chinese made smart TV with android on it. be more worried about australian government intercepting your calls.

The brainwashing is strong with this one

Not sure what model if Oz model this is but on the webside it does not list B28
Here are the 4G bands listed could be omition but better check first.
    4G Network 4G/LTE, 2100 (B1), 1800 (B3), 850 (B5), 2600 (B7)

    • Networks + Bands
      5G: sub-6
      4G: LTE
      3G: WCDMA
      2G: GSM
      2G: GSM band 2/3/5/8
      3G: WCDMA band 1/2/5/8
      4G: LTE band 1/2/3/5/7/8/18/19/20/26/28/32/38/40/41/42
      5G: n1/n3/n5/n7/n8/n20/n26/n28/n38/n40/n41/n77/n78

      • Do you know if the device will support australian VoLTE when 3G voice services are switched off this year? I have found that many phones that do support VoLTE from hardware and international software do not support on Aus networks due to firmware.

This device isn't sold on Telstra's website, but is carried by JB HiFi

        • works for me … got mine from JB., im on optus.

    • VoLTE WILL work will Telstra & Optus 4G-network…Motorola has a big presence in AU & lying about B28 (or not delivering software for VoLTE) is TOO big of a risk & will see their demise.

G54 VoLTE works with Vodafone: the only-carrier to turn-OFF their 3G-network.

Note that Telstra & Optus sells Motorola phones & note the 'G' category,

Have Xiaomi phones that have Volte and Vowifi on Vodafone and Optus but not on Telstra.
All have B28 and capable of Volte.

        • Have Xiaomi phones that have Volte and Vowifi… but not on Telstra

Feel free to share Xiaomi model#, release year, whether it was bought via a MAJOR AU-retailer (eg JB-Hifi), AU-xiaomi approved, parallel-import etc

Try searching the internet for a work-around / hack ?

All AU-carriers DO restrict device on their network & hide behind 'commercial confidentiality'.

          • @ab c: Redmi note 10 pro is one.
tried all codes available on the web as many others have no go.

            • @costas60: May be share your experience with others ?

        • Grey Import?

          • @bobokingdom: It seems that AU-Xaomi don't give warranty to 'Redmi note 10 pro'…warranty is with the importer: likely a small retail shop.

RISK-assessment: for-ME, I would play-safer than that. Nothing phone is being sold via JB-Hifi & they have an AU presence & AU-warranty…but AU-Nothing have yet to prove it-self with warranty claims & Global-Nothing is relatively NEW…time will tell.

Sure there are people who buy phones base on other-criteria, eg have something-different, are IT-savy & have time to find 'hack' etc etc etc. But the above can't overcome AU-carriers BARRING phones on their network….we'll see how many of these CAN'T CALL when Telstra & Optus shut down their 3G-network later this year.

            • @ab c: Agree, buy from JB. If the phone stopped working during VoLTE during warranty period, return for a full refund. But then, most likely they will work just fine as they have the correct certification for AU.

  • This or Motorola Edge Fusion 20 for $279 on Amazon?

    • +1

Edge Fusion 20: if Android-support & security-patches are important to you, then this phone software-support is ending soon, or about to end.

If researching is too time-consuming, then stick to phones that have been-paid (imo) to have a detailed-reviews & hence allow comparisons, eg NanoReview, NotebookCheck etc-> https://www.google.com/search?q=notebookcheck+edge+20+fusion…

See my comments above & watch this space, if you can-wait-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15205408/redir

      • Thanks, disregarding updates it seems the Fusion 20 has better camera and processor but less RAM so it's a tough decision, I either get the Fusion 20 or wait for G54 to go sub $200 again.

        • G54 and G84 have different screens so depends what’s important to you. only downside i found with my g84 is bluetooth 5.1 vs 5.3, but liked the better screen.

          • @garage sale: I mainly just want a cheap phone, Fusion 20 at $279 just seems like a good deal due to the camera and better processor than G84 but the Fusion 20 was seen cheaper here 2 years ago so probably not a wise choice. Updates aside Fusion 20 seems to beat G84 in a lot of aspects for less so even at $300 G84 2 years later doesn't seem as good of a deal anymore, $150 for the G54 is great though will buy at $180 if it drops again.

        • wait for G54 to go sub $200 again.

          Likely.

but the Fusion 20 was seen cheaper here 2 years ago

If you've read widely, & from creditable & established source, give them more weight than comments @ forum, eg OzBargain.

  • While I will still support Motorola since they are one of the few to still support microsd cards and 3.5mm jacks in their phones…

I do not understand how they can get away with taking a 2 year old phone, rehashing it with a few changes, colour scheme etc and selling it as a new model with a higher price tag ?

Comparison between the 2 year old Motorola G82 and this G84 here

    • +1

Agree there's not much difference at all. Bear in mind the G82 is 2 years old now, but it's only 15 months older than the G84. Not a huge shock to keep the same chipset. The difference in RAM, screen and audio, along with an aggressive lower RRP make it reasonable I guess. It goes to show how a huge gap in the market can be exploited, it's just an average device, but nothing else comes close if you want a mid-range 3.5 jack/micro-sd/oled.

    • With G54 selling @ $149 recently, G84 need to be selling below $200 to-match & my reasons-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15202436/redir

  • What's the actual Motorola flagship phone for 2024. I'm new to Motorola. I recently purchased the G54 and it's an amazing phone minus the processor and camera. If I can get a higher spec model I might go for it as my next flagship device

    • they haven't released any higher end models such as the Edge 30 Pro, Ultra or Fusion since 2022 in Australia. The Edge 40 Pro and Neo, last year's models, were never released here. The current Edge 40 is the most premium phone in their range.

      • +1

        Thanks for the info

  • minus the processor and camera

Although not-flagship, consider Moto-Edge-40 (ThinkPhone & Razr 40 Ultra are more expensive),
    https://nanoreview.net/en/phone-compare/motorola-moto-g54-5g…
    https://www.notebookcheck.net/Motorola-Edge-40-review-Slim-l…

It WILL be-cleared @ 50% OFF ~$350 later this year & @ that price, UN-likely to have rival.

    Note that AU-Motorola is releasing NEW-model every 12 months…mostly.

    • +1

Been using the Edge 40 since it's release and have had very minimal issues with it.

      Positives:
It feels premium (maybe just because it's the most expensive phone I've had in the past 10 years).
The battery lasts me the whole day and charging is very quick.
Plus having the chop chop light again after my last 2 phones being Xiaomi branded is a dream.
Bluetooth audio is less laggy than my old phones
The screen is nice and vibrant

      Negatives:
For the first few months I'd get an error saying "no sim detected" and I'd have to reset the phone each time for it to work again. That happened every 30 minutes or so and drove me mad. Turns out there was a setting option which could fix the issue.
Performance kind of stinks in games compared to my last phone.
The speakers are very loud for a phone, but not good. Kind of tinny and distorts at high volumes.

      • Sorry this is off topic @ goose25. I am having the same issue about sim not detected with my iphone 8 on vodafone. I have changed nothing in phone / carrier except apple updates. Care to share how did you fix the issue with your Edge 40 ? Usually, it happens when I come out of after being in the no coverage area for couple of minutes (i.e in the basement of a car park / shopping center). Appreciate your feedback.

        • Not sure about iPhone software, sorry. From what I recall, I had to go into the carrier and connections settings menu on my phone and just reset the whole lot and re-connect to everything again.

  • Just be warned that if it's anything like the G82 the camera is pretty ass. I'm moving to a used Pixel 7 from the G82 for this reason.

  • Just bought from Bing Lee yesterday $299 (-$20 first order), so it was $279 for me.

    • Good price but oos on their website, did you find it in store?

      • +1

I ordered online while it was in stock and picked up already.
