  • Thanks, I've got one already, but partner using an old Shelta one that's falling apart, these are decent! Grabbed one

Bunnings green umbrella for best value

    • +9

great until it stops raining and you're carrying it everywhere

      • +13

I usually end up accidentally leaving umbrellas on the train anyway. At least I assume so, I carry it around all day then suddenly I notice I'm not carrying it anymore.

        • +1

If you carry one all day, then you might as well have more fun carrying one of those Japanese umbrellas with a Samurai sword handle

        • Been there many times!

    • +15

And the Bunnings ones are big AF so why are you comparing it to a compact one

      • Because they are cheaper and actually keep you dry in comparison to compact and last a long time. I actually carry both as i always have a Shelta in my bag and the Bunnings umbrella if i know its raining or going to. I only wish
        Bunnings had a bigger version.

  • What's the RRP?

    88 cents more… no deal

    • votes/clicks say otherwise - Veblen good?

I bought one of these about a year or so back & it didn’t survive the first really windy day. It’s decent but just be aware they aren’t very strong, good thing is that you get Amazon’s guarantee so at worst they’ll replace it for you or give you a full refund.
Blunt umbrellas are pretty good but you need to wait for the rare sales to get one for about $60 but well worth it at that price they are virtually indestructible.

      Thanks for the feedback!

    Love the fine print

"This product can expose you to chemicals including Di(2-ethylhexyl), phthalate (DEHP), which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or orther reproductive harm."

    • +14

Yeah but getting wet is worse.

      • +1

Is it worse for "reproductive harm"?

    • +5

Proposition 65 warnings i.e known to the State of California to cause cancer etc etc are on pretty much everything due to the way the law was originally worded. Almost everything you touch potentially causes cancer according to the State of California.

It's also easier just to add the warning to anything you sell if California is a potential market because the list of potentially cancer causing chemicals is so ridiculously long.

    • +1

      Just California knows this?

  • +2

If I remember correctly the handles on these get sticky over time. Like really sticky

    • Similar issue with another umbrella, work mate tip: good scrub with hand sanitizer and paper towell - worked great!

      • Is that the same as stripping rubberised trim in a car? I've used alcohol and towel before, but never tried hand sanitiser and paper towel before.

        • Can't speak to your car trim/alcohol question, (maybe there's an alcohol component in the handwash) but with the abundance of hand sanitizer everywhere still, it's easy to try :)

    • +1

Sounds like the same issue you get on some electrical devices after a while.

Anyone in the market for a quality compact umbrella, I highly recommend keeping an eye out for the Blunt Metro when it occasionally goes on special. I have one and it’s been great. I have also gifted them to several happy recipients.

    • I have bought a couple cheap compact umbrellas on Amazon (different sellers, all pretty close in design) and in all honesty they have been decent enough quality that it would take a lifetime of storms to make the blunt umbrellas a good financial decision! And that's assuming I would never lose it!

    • +1

I 100% agree about Blunt Metro, I got mine through a rare sale/discount code combo on eBay for around $60 but even if you spend $80 it’s well worth it as they are kinda indestructible. One thing I will say is that they can be a little small especially when it’s windy but I guess that’s the price you pay for the compactness and they do sell bigger versions if you aren’t having to carry it on public transport.
After years of wasting money on cheap and decent umbrellas, I honestly can’t recommend them enough.

    Ordered 1 just to try,Thanks

Got one last year. Poor design and built quality. A slight gush of wind bent the rib and it see you later. Also had issues with retractable string which kept getting stuck. Lucky Amazon have excellent return policy.

  • Diameter when opened is 38" (96.5 cm)
    So it's pretty small.

    • my old choice was a free-trade-show umbrella with advertising that was 96cm across and weighed 216gms - now with old age, the handle slips out so that's kinda broken

I've had an auto-open and close umbrella and that was too small and too heavy !

my current one, bought in Japan for maybe $50, is slimmer but bigger, 109cm across the open points, and weighs 88gms - I slip it into my back pocket in case it rains, and forget about it as it feels almost weightless in my pocket - so that's my goto.

  • +2

    Apart from the auto open,
what advantages does this offer as an umbrella over a $5 one?

    • +3

      Street cred

  • Ordered one thanks

  • +2

Is auto open like my windscreen wipers starting to swipe - when it detects rain it opens?

    • Auto open means when you press the button, the spring pressure causes it to fully open on its own after that. On other umbrellas you press the button to release the catch but you still need to manually push the umbrella open until it clicks into place.

      • I'm guessing auto-close doesn't fully close and lock but more likely just lets it down so you can reclip/tie/lock and closure mechanism ?

    • That’s only on the Tesla Space X version ;P

  • Didn't know Samsonite made umbrellas. I wonder if Rimowa do too.

  • the new ones are all wind proof does not flyaway when the wind blows,it automatically adds 5 kilos of weight to the weight of the canopy so it won't get disturbed by winds

  • Compare this umbrella with Xiaomi umbrella. Which one is better ?

  • Anyone know of a good black umbrella with a long handle?

  • +1

The best umbrellas we've had are the ones you get with cars (talking more premium brands)

    • yes the one that slides out of door edge of a Roller or Bentley should be 'acceptable' quality - but is not a cheap umbrella … ;-)

    • I agree. the renault i have is crap, the BMW one is awesome.. Honda is somewhere in the middle

  • Automatic open and close?

Wow, they've invented a perpetual motion machine!

  • Mine lost in transit, never delivered. :(

  • I was sent the wrong item.
