Mate, all jokes aside, when I used to assist with fire safety events we once had a person ask us if it was okay to change their battery at another time of year. This person was obviously of diminished cognitive capacity so we had to be careful how we approached it; a colleague was excellent and assured them they could make the 1st of any month The Special Day, and why not add other home maintenance tasks like air con cleaning, sweep cobwebs, check gutters, etc? The person left fully chuffed they were allowed to decide when they wanted to do that.

A pro tip, though, is put the date of change on each battery when you install it. That way you can see at a glance when it’s time to change them again. A Sharpie or sticker on the side facing outwards works best.

      • Well given the best before date it might be a great time to discuss this with family, friends, neighbours or enemies.

Most of the family members living outside of my house has no idea when they last replaced there batteries. So most are going to get 2 spare batteries. Also prevent the annoying beeping sound which always happens late at night or early in the morning.

I think most people will get away with using a couple of batteries given most houses generally require a minimum of 2 smoke alarms.

Yeah l Sharpie mine this time too. Best to Sharpie them once you put them in and verifying its not beeping.

Its only the 24th of March on the Julian calendar. Still a week to go until 1st April.

  • I thought smoke alarms have to have a 10 year battery, maybe that's Queensland a only.

The whole unit has a 10-year lifespan.
Some have sealed batteries with a 10-year lifespan.
Every smoke alarm has a date of installation on it (or it should) and 10 years from that date, it should be replaced, even if it's hard wired.

Models with 9v battery backup should be replaced annually.

    • Depends on the smoke alarm and state or territory. Generally requires interconnected smoke alarms connected to main power with a secondary backup power. The backup power can be 9v or a 10 year inbuilt non removable battery. States and territory may have slightly different rules and exemptions.

However, most sparky will install the cheapest products which is generally the smoke alarm using a 9v battery unless you specifically requested it or the application requires it.

So few devices use these that a 12 pack of them would seem to be something that very few people would need.

Might I suggest a single 9V lithium ion battery, recharged every year. It would outlast the smoke alarm. Some are even USB rechargeable, so you can use the USB recharger you already have.

    • Rechargeable lithium ion are not recommended for smoke alarms.

      • The only reason they aren't recommended is that they have a flat discharge curve with a cliff at the end. So you get little or no notice that the battery is going flat. Its just suddenly flat and doesn't even have enough volts to tell you it is. So people who rely on the alarm to tell them to change its batteries shouldn't use them. There's no problem if you change your smoke alarm battery to a schedule - like ever 1st April - before it goes flat.

        • Sounds better than getting woken up at night when it's 2 degrees because the low battery beeping starts.

    • Unless you have kids or RC toys. A lot of controllers use 9v batteries

      • Guitars with active pickups

So for less cost that 2 of these batteries, you could buy a new photoelectric smoke alarm from Bunnings with a 10 year lithium battery that doesn't need changing? https://www.bunnings.com.au/fire-pro-photoelectric-10-year-l… Sorry, but ten of these batteries at $17 each over 10 years for $170 (plus the smoke alarm) vs just $33? Where's the bargain?

    • I believe the deal is on the cost of the battery pack themselves… not so much about firealarms. At least that's how I see it.

It is $17 for 12, not each. So $14 for 10 years assuming the price is stable over the period.

Second, the unit you linked has a massive failure rate, they don't even last 1 year apparently. 83% of the reviews are 1 star.

  • Onepass free delivery is not available for this item for some reason

    • Moderater added the onepass. I have updated the post.

  • Thanks OP picked up a box at Marion SA with date 12-2028. Also got some AA's which all seem to go 'missing' even the rechargeable ones!

  • Thanks OP - I bought a pack at Chatswood - expiry is 12-28, so plenty of time to use these.

At one stage, daylight savings meant it was time to change PM…

    • Was there a lot of stock at Chatswood? I don't want to make the trip for nothing…

      • Officeworks web site is back online again.

I managed to place a click-n-collect order, so Chatswood store probably still has some stock. I guess I'll find out for sure sometime on Sunday.

        • Chatswood Officeworks had at least another 10 boxes in stock as of about 2pm on Sunday. Best before 12-2028

They also had other battery sizes on clearance, including odd sizes like C and D cells. I picked up AAAx24 for $8. Best before 12-2027.
