Stop Start does not relate to the car feature of the same name
Are you sure?
Castrol MAGNATEC STOP-START specifically protects your engine in busy traffic conditions, offering 20%* more protection from damaging stop-start engine wear.
So it relates to the car feature of the same name then?
@jv: That's my interpretation.
@MS Paint: @brownsound should therefore make a public apology…
@MS Paint: They should also probably compensate Castrol as I purchased a competitor's product after reading their comment.
@jv: That's what I thought too but apparently I was wrong
@foxes28: My car is not Stop Start, so didn't want to damage it.
$64 for 10L-> https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/castrol-castrol-magnatec…
APPLICATION: Castrol MAGNATEC Stop-Start 5W-30 is suitable for use in automotive petrol and diesel engines where the manufacturer recommends an API SN, ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 or earlier specification 5W-30 lubricant
It's marketing & ALL Premium-brand come up with their gimic
https://www.castrol.com/en_au/australia/home/car-engine-oil/…
so my car is a 2010 falcon and doesnt have stop start… would this oil still be ok to use?
5W-30 is fine: subject to below.
Suggestions for oil selection,
1.Follow owner/wrokshop manual: note viscosity (eg 5W-30) & any-code, eg for a 2023 G80 M3, BMW suggest 'LL-12FE or LL-17FE+' 0w-30, then buy oil from a PREMIUM-brand that has 'LL-12FE' 'LL-17FE+'…whatever additive they are.
2.Oil change within the scheduled period, eg 12mths or 10K km.
3.Depart from the above, ONLY if it come from a reputable &/or trusted-source, & the reason-given seems plausible AFTER you have done your-research.Even PREMIUM-brand oil manufacturers use marketing-gimic to fool you & people believe them, eg
Castrol: Magnatec stop-start-> https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/castrol-magnatec.1…
Mobil 1 Million mile test-> https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/1-million-miles-on…
Penrite Extra 10-> https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2795863
etc etc etcStay with PREMIUM-brand that are on-sales (~50% OFF), & keep away from budget-brand, eg Gulf-western, SCA, etc.
Btw, I favour this brand-model, NOT because it's 'Magnatec Stop-Start'. Beside meeting my car oil-spec, it's the lightest 5W-30 I have tried & I drive for mileage…& the used-oil is not-too-sludgy.
what makes Gulf Western a lesser oil if it meets the specification? Or is it just the vibe?
Ditto SCA oil?
What data do you have that supports your thesis?
Good question.
I have 2 NEW-cars as experiment, starting from 2006. I have noted a findings on my 2011 here-> https://qr.ae/ps43so. The engine-internal is 'clean & NO oil stain/varnish…& the-SAME on the oil-cap inner-surface & dip-stick also'.
Sure, both engine HAD-wear, but wear are kept to a minimum using mainly PREMIUM-brand oil….with strict oil-change interval.Read widely on 'Base-oil 5 Groups'. Budget-brand oil cheap-out on base-oil: likely more of the Group I & II in their blend, & imo not worth the risk…may be the answer is on the last-line, as per noted above ?
Budget-brand oil on a 5°C or lower cold-morning start: notice louder & rougher engine-sound compare to a PREMIUM-brand oil…what do you think is happening with moving parts ? Then notice what happen in 1st few minutes drive ?
After you have experimented with budget-brand oil on 2 NEW-cars, feel free to share your findings.
@ab c: But you didn't run a vehicle on a budget brand oil so how do you know that, for instance, Castrol or Penrite 5w-30 C3 id better than Gulf Western C3? Or any other like-for-like specification and viscosity oil you care to name?
Have you done any used oil analysis or similar testing?
Budget-brand oil on a 5°C or lower cold-morning start
Those comments were referencing Gulf Western 5W-30…tested.
Have you done any used oil analysis or similar testing?
No…what are you hoping to achieve from the test ?
@ab c: Assuming you are the Scott Dismukes that you have linked to, you haven't tested anything.
If you don't know the value of UOA in determining oil degradation or lack thereof then there's no point continuing this conversation.
@brad1-8tsi: You are free to try-out the method I have documented above.
Imo, 5°C or lower 1st start: louder-sound & engine resistance to rev. are proof of friction & EXTRA-wear. Test it out for yourself.
I have done some research on UOA & I'm not confident that it'll benefit my circumstance. UOA is a guide.
May be it's best for you to stick to budget-brand oil…each to their own. No offense taken from your comments.
@ab c: "documented method" Mate, you are hilarious.
Had to grin when you called certain brands "budget"….shows you dont know much about motor oil! The so called "premium" brands love taking extra money from people who dont know any better!
I did say 'Stay with PREMIUM-brand that are on-sales (~50% OFF)'.
Castrol Magnatec Stop-Start 5W-30: I still have some 5L & 6L costing $20-$28, from 2018-onwards sales & some are documented here-> https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/castrol%20magnatec%…
No offense taken from your comments…each to their own.
This was the price of Castrol Edge 5w-30 before.
