Can You Take More than One Laptop in Your Carry-on Luggage?

Airlines: Malaysia Airlines. Economy.

Is it possible to take two laptops, one for use and another for gift to overseas?

Malaysia Airlines says this:

In addition to the free cabin baggage allowance, the passenger may carry ONE of these personal items below free of charge (either option A, B or C) and all the combined items (as a total) must be within the maximum weight of the cabin baggage allowance stated in the table above with respective travel classes:

One (1) notebook or a laptop computer bag, OR

Not sure if this means one laptop part of free cabin baggage allowance and another additional.

Yes you can take 2 laptops in one bag on any flight. Done that quite a lot over the years.

The issue will be weight restrictions, if applicable, but not number of devices.

I have carried multiple laptops for work trips many, many times in carry on baggage. How would an airline police that policy when it is airport security that reviews what is in your bags? The most the airline can do is potentially weigh your carry on at check in, although i've never seen MH do this.

If you are really in doubt, put the other laptop in your check-in? Or check them both in? If not travelling with checked baggage, check your carry-on in. Just make sure they are well protected/padded!

    • Thank you. MH is really strict at Adelaide Airport, my mum had the carry on weighed and had to return items and we picked those from their office.

      • It's the weight limit, most carriers have 7kg limit on carry-ons. As long as the total carry on (including the weight of your bag) is less than 7kg, you will be fine.

Note: the also have size limit of your carry on. A 55cm luggage is the perfect size for carry on.

    • I don't think you can check-in laptops because of the battery?

      • only loose batteries, i've checked in laptops before

        • only loose batteries

You can't take loose batteries in your check-in luggage…

          • @jv: yes, otherwise they call your name over the terminal speakers haha

      • You can. Just the laptop not the battery.

Had an Lenovo X270. Take out the battery and it can get checked in. Downside with modern laptops.

    • How would an airline police that policy

      At the boarding gate.

  • If you read carefully, they refer to number of bags, not the number of laptops.

Yep, I do it all the time. I've even done 3 on occasion. No issues.

Thank you all. Hopefully the Adelaide Airport is chill with carrying multiple laptops by one person.

Any idea about TRS? I get I can claim the GST for something I am gifting overseas, what about if I buy iphone and bring it back, I have to pay back the GST refund?

Can you return to Australia with these goods?

Is google broken or something? Those are very frequent questions.
You claim GST on exports, and pay GST on imports, if over the limit.

    • Legally? You have to declare your iphone + everything you acquired overseas on your Customs form. As long as the "total" amount is less than $900, it will be tax free.

Yes you absolutely can. Have taken 2-3 laptops nationally and internationally many times. Sometimes with large laptop powerbank and portable monitor as well. No problems at all, so long as laptops are out on their own trays through customs inspection. Portable monitor and tablets can stay inside bags.

One (1) notebook or a laptop computer bag

    You overlooked the key word.
