Can anyone confirm if it is hard to install and make them interconnected ? Do you have to get a licenced electricians to install them. Smoke alarm companies charge at least $129 each fully installed.

    • +6

These are battery so don't need to be hardwired - No electrician needed. They basically pair together to the remote like Bluetooth; it's super simple to setup - I got this brand for a reno job after they were installed in our rental because I was so impressed.

    • +2

its not hardwired so you dont need a sparky to install it

  • not a fan of non-removable batteries tbh

    • Why? They save a lot of time.

    • +4

They last 10 years vs replacing 9v battery every year(and having to remember to replace them!)

More cost effective too over life time.

      • thats fair, just having to replace the whole thing when it eventually runs out seems like a waste even if it is over a long time

        • +5

Assuming the battery doesn't fail early, it should fail at about the time the detector is due for replacement anyway.

          • +6

@Aureus: Can confirm any smoke detector requires replacing every 10 years hardwired or otherwise.

        • I was thinking the same until I learned that these sensors don't last much longer and need to be replaced regularly anyway. Replacing it together with the battery makes things more reliable.

    • +5

It's a ten-year battery - same as the recommended lifespan of a smoke alarm, anyway.

    • I got cheap detectors with 9 volt batteries and they start chirping after 12 months. 10 years means you need to buy and swap nine less batteries.

    • +1

Unless I am mistaken by LAW you are supposed to replace smoke alarms every 10 years anyway, so what's the harm.
They also recommend chaning 9v batteries annually, so that would be 10 x 9v batteries per Alarm otherwise.

    • +4

In Queensland 9v removable batteries would not be compliant.

      Smoke alarms must:
      be photoelectric.
comply with the Standard. (The body of the alarm must be marked with AS3786-2014.)
      be hardwired (e.g. 240v) to the mains power supply with a secondary power source (i.e. non removable 10 year battery) or;
be powered by 10 year non-removable batteries type photoelectric smoke alarm.
be interconnected with every other smoke alarm in the dwelling so all activate together.
must not contain an ionisation sensor.

These things are bloody annoying at times. 😬

    • +1

This particular model or smoke alarms in general that sound off when not wanted? Not the place for a rant, if that's the case - it's either a deal or not.

  • Do they work across 2 storeys?

    • Working well for me across 2 storeys.

Have had one false alarm in around 2 years, no idea what triggered it but did cause a moment of panic. Luckily it was during the day so wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Still recommend it, nice unit with the remote control useful for silencing when cooking goes a bit smoky.

EDIT: Mine is the hard-wired version

    • +1

I’ve got one in the garage that links back into the main house… and it’s not a short distance …

      So I would say yes

  • -7

Equivalent products available on eBay cheaper.

Sorry after your last question, I really couldn't help myself.

      • You've identified my personal hell! Just follow me around posting AI stuff until I jump off a cliff.

        • Lol.. sorry I am actually looking for smoke alarms, so following smoke alarm posts.

          • @UltimateAI: I bought four with matching control fobs for $60 total last year on eBay. That was a good price from waiting for a 99c auction, but even buy it now you can get 4 for $120.

            • @mskeggs: Thank-you, what brand did you go with?

              • -1

@UltimateAI: I bought one called evadare. Works fine but was painful to link 4 together.

    • +2

There's always "equivalent" products available for cheaper. Is the same product available on ebay for cheaper?

      • I think that is true if you are comparing raybans to no name or Rolex to swatch, but are you really brand loyal to Emerald Planet for all your smoke alarm needs, or do you just want one from an Australian seller that meets standards and has the same features?

When I was looking at them last year, many brands all relied on the same factory activfire certificate. I can't remember is Emerald was one, but nothing about them stood out as any different to the many others on the market.

    • +2

Its worth paying extra for smoke alarms that don't randomly set all connected alarms off at 3am in the morning. Its becoming a much more common occurrence, especially with cheap smoke alarms.

Are Emerald better? I have no idea, but I think there's a better chance of a quality product then eBay.

      • -1

        Maybe.
These guys were the cheapest available when Qld changed their laws, hence the past deal popularity.
Now there are systems quite a bit cheaper.
Are the cheap ones prone to false alarms?
I don't know, but if they pass the CSIRO standard they must meet some criteria. My experience after having them for a year was two activations, after cooking each time.

  • Missed this deal (5 in stock as of posting), I need 7…any reason I am missing why these aren't ok for my double storey 70s brick property?

    https://firesafeonline.com.au/product/interconnected-photoel…

  • Do they come 10-year warranty?

    • No, 7 year. Also, its out of stock anyway. Other stores are bit more expensive so not really OZB deal.

      • Incorrect. The warranty is now 10 years. They have recently raised it from 7 years to 10 years.

Check out the alarm specs here:
        https://emeraldplanet.com.au/product/battery-powered-alarms/

        • Thats the manufacturer, but buying it from the stockist (your own link in the post) says only 7 years. It could be old stock etc.. There is chance that manufacturer will honour 10 years, but there is no guarantee.

  • +7

Just a reminder that homeowners in NSW can get a FREE 10-year battery smoke alarm installed by Fire and Rescue NSW. They will also install more if required in your home. You can request a safety visit here or contact your local fire station to book.

  • I know it's in a whole different price range (around $160 if you shop around), but I'm a huge fan of Google Nest fire and smoke alarms - especially if you have pets in the house. Not only is it a quality alarm, but it notifies you instantly if the alarm is triggered, no matter where you are. So you can check cameras/call the neighbours/rush home/call 000 etc. Plus it politely tells you it's about to sound a very loud alarm, so you can turn off the alarm if it's not required. eg "There's smoke in the kitchen. The alarm is about to sound. It's going to be loud."

    • "OK Google, test my smoke alarms."

  • it shows as 43 in stock now, but shipping is expensive $14,

  • If the smoke alarm is accidentally triggered (say from cooking), can these be remotely turned off? The description says “Can Connect to Smoke Alarm Controller” but not sure if that means an app or not. Or if the App is even any good.

Reason being is that I have 3.4m ceilings which needless to say is PITA to get up to to turn off the alarm manually. I was considering Google Nest for this reason (albeit a lot more expensive).

FYI: I have received mine and on the sticker it says "replace by end of July 2033" . That implies manufacturing date less than year ago.
Shipping to TAS was 15.05 inc GST.

  • Thanks OP, was shopping around tonight for a smoke alarm to replace the one in my son's room which has been decommissioned recently due to false alarms. I ended up buying four (4) of the Emerald Planet smoke detectors and the smoke alarm controller (which is $27.50).

Hopefully never have to use them but good peace of mind knowing that they are on the ceiling watching our backs.
