Isn't that why you bought 10?

      • +2

maybe he meant to say bought 1 but hit 0 by accident lol.

      • +2

They're Maserati's, he needs 10 just to make sure he has at least 1 running to get back to the dealership when picking up the others.

      • I finally understand the statement (joke), nice

        • +4

Saved to buy an iPhone 16 but i think i will use it to buy a masarrati instead.

    • +5

      Shannon's will insure it

      • +19

        G O….G G O…..

        • Is it sad that I'm old enough to get this?

          • @ialam99: What , you thought you'd live forever ?
            Pla-net reality

      • +2

Shannon’s is crap now, so much drama dealing with them and I’m not alone.
Loads of better insurance options now

        • +1

Back when I had an 'enthusiast' vehicle, Shannons were the only game in town. JustCar was also an option, but only if you didn't have any other options (read: P plate or <25yo, less than stellar driving history etc).
Given the drop in interest since the early-mid 00s of these types of cars, I'm surprised to hear there are more options now than before.
Which other insurance companies are competing with Shannons these days?
Only RACV comes to mind, I highly doubt the other majors are worth considering for anything more than a Corolla.

          • @toastfacegrillah: funny enough enthusiast (the insurance company haha) is who i've gone through and have heard nothing but positive things about even when coming to claims. Shannons on the other hand arguing and having to get third parties involved to get paid out or issues solved.

            • @quikstix: Thanks @quikstix , I did come across them during a quick search shortly after I had posted the above response.

From what I could find, Enthusiast insure based on distance but not usage (eg. can use it every weekend but only up to X kms per year), whereas Shannons, from what I recall, was the opposite depending on the cover (eg. limited usage meant 1-2x a month, but unlimited kms).

Was hoping it might now be a bit more competitive, as having only 2 choices doesn't really benefit the customer (ie. can't shop around).

              • @toastfacegrillah: yea i had a few arguments with Shannons myself, bought a vehicle and spent a ton of money doing it up (what they claim is their main clientele) and they wouldnt insure me for the new value (even with receipts of money spent) they would only insure for what it was purchased for. Bizarre, so i called back and the next person wasnt much better. Eventually got a call back from a manager stating both ppl i spoke to were incorrectly trained so he quoted me but then the price they quoted was double enthusiasts…

        • I was scared off Shannons years ago when they quoted me $3000 and others insurers were around $800/yr.

          • @Wing Nut: @Wing Nut Yeah i remember them being significantly more than others, however most other major insurers (think AAMI, GIO, NRMA etc) would either not insure the car due to various factors, or didn't have an agreed value.
As I mentioned above, RACV were the only other option but charged just as much.
JCI would insure pretty much anything but, again, no agreed value (from memory).

CTP will cover everything you need. Plus a few ‘hit a car and discovered I am not insured’ posts on Ozbargain if something happens; and you will be all set.

    • Maserati driver's didn't usually insure

Wondering how much are the maintenance cost on this type of car?

    • +3

Not sure but I remember reading a clutch change on a Ferrari was $30k+. This ain't no Ferrari but expect to fork out.

      • +10

Isn't this the reason Lamborghini makes cars? :P

      • First Service was $1250 for near no work done.

      • +2

News just in: ZF automatic doesn't require a clutch replacement

      • $9k for a 360 at a Ferrari dealership. Surprisingly, the bulk of the $9k is parts, not labour.

    • +11

I actually had a chat with someone last week whom swapped his Maserati to a brand new Lexus NX350. He said it costs 10s of thousands to maintain and it was so troublesome and costly that he couldn't be happier getting rid of it. I didn't ask him the details but he was definitely not happy with his Maserati.

      • +4

I didn't ask him the details but he was definitely not happy

It's a familiar story with Italian cars and bikes. They look great, but they have a terrible reputation for reliability.

        • +20

You buy these with your heart, not your brain.

          • +16

@elektron: Then a heart attack after finding out the maintenance and repair cost.

            • +3

@beefmaster: I don't think Maserati or Ferrari owners give a shit about maintenance costs.

          • +2

@Torch: So which falls into the "Buy the actual vehicle"?

          • +1

@Torch: I've owned 3 Japanese bikes and would never buy Italian

      • +2

One of the great joys in owning a Maserati / Ferrari / Lamborghini / McLaren etc is paying the massive maintenance and repair bills. People who get into these cars know what's coming and are prepared for the costs, plus they have great stories to share with us poor people. 'I paid $15k for a clutch replacement at 30k km. Whoah!'

    • +2

Friend has a gran turismo and its like $5k for discs and pads! :(

      • Not to mention the to replace them fairly regularly.

      • +1

Ever thought they're performance brakes that'll pull you up from 100km/h around 10 metres shorter than in your Camry?

    • +2

That's the real money pit with these types of cars, even if you brought the car itself on a good deal, the maintenance is the real killer.

  • +58

What’s the bargain, isn’t this the regular price?

Maserati is a horrible car brand IMO. Other than a nice sounding exhaust in some models, most Maserati’s use parts from cheaper cars, the reliability and servicing costs are horrendous, insurance is a premium, and depreciation is depressive.

    • +30

      Does it even sound great? It's a 2.0l 4cyl hybrid…

It's just an overpriced status symbol.

      • +36

By definition, status symbols are overpriced. Otherwise they wouldn't be status symbols.

        • I disagree with you on this. Status symbols are not overpriced. What are overpriced are the products. People buy the overpriced products because they come with the status symbols.

          • @lrq663611: There are status symbols and then there are OVERPRICED status symbols.

        • +1

By definition, status symbols are overpriced.

Not necessarily. Rare things such as an Oscar award, or a war medal, can also be status symbols.

      • +19

I find it interesting this sub nit picks certain deals, but is ok to fork out $700 for RM's, $3k for a Apple laptop with 256gb storage, $700 for a console released 5 years ago, $1.2k on a vacuum, $2k for a 'fitness watch' etc etc

This is just like those, a status symbol.

We are at an age that Hyundai sells vehicles for $120k, so for some ppl, this is ok..

        • +6

I don’t think a console is a status symbol. Not like people have much choice if they want a brand new PS5 or Series X.

          But I get your point.

        • +8

Don't forget we're also the country who has normalised $800k+ as a cheap housing option in any major city these days haha

          • +2

            @BLB1984:

            who has normalised $800k+

            So what is normal?
Once you grasp that money is abstract and it's just a number it has very little meaning on it's own.
As an example, Manhattan was purchased for $24 in the 17th century. To them paying $100 for a house would seem ludicrous. Similarly, your grandchildren will look back and say 'only $800k for house, you should've bought ten!'

        • +9

RMs will last a lifetime. Apple laptops are incredibly reliable and Apple's service is second to none (I used to work for an AASP and we could turn around a laptop in a day. No other brand can do that). Consoles are awesome. My Dyson vacuum has lasted over 10 years and works as well as it did the day I bought it. These aren't status symbols, they are quality products where you get what you pay for and give you a lifetime of service so when they are discounted to the point where we can afford them we all get excited.

Maserati is a name that meant something many years ago but is now a totally garbage product living off that name. That's why this sub nit picks this deal because it isn't!

        • +3

but is ok to fork out

Bargains occur at all price points. It's not the price, it's discount from the regular price.

        • +6

          And 8gb of ram.

Apple have had their fair share of defects in Laptops.

      • +4

      • +1

Because no CEO ever drove a car less than $100k….

      • +1

Just buy and live in it, two birds, one stone

    • +3

That describes most luxury brands, but yes Maserati have been pretty egregious with a few particularly cheap feeling Jeep parts in recent years.

This car is based on the Alfa Romeo Stelvio platform instead of a Jeep, so it has a much more luxurious base to start with. I have a Stelvio and it is a very nice car all around, so I have high hopes that the Grecale will be a step above some recent Maserati models in some of those respects.

    • Which brand do you recommend?

      • +3

        Probably Franklin's

        • +2

Yes, if you are into shop trolleys :-)

        • *No Frills

    • +1

So are all Audi's and VW's

    • whilst I don’t disagree - I’ll point out most cars use parts from cheaper tier cars, which doesn’t necessarily make it a bad thing. Although I do think Maserati make bad cars based on my research. There is a reason a used one is so ‘cheap’
