Pepper mill for close to $300 a bargain? What's wrong with this world?

    • +1

RRP is $349. 20% off is a good deal on this item. If its value at that price is another matter. Never used one but have it on good authority that its a engineered beast - it has a gear box or something.

    • +3

I've had mine since the original indigogo campaign and wouldn't trade it for anything. It's never going to break and it's a pleasure to use.

    • Have you ever used one? Worth every cent, and so well constructed I’m sure they’ll be working just as well in 10-20 years.

    • +3

There’s nothing wrong with a $300 pepper mill if you can afford it lol.

      • I have never said there's something wrong with it. I'm just amazed that there's a market for something like this.

        • +1

Don't be surprised, Samsung's latest phone costs $2800.

this pepper mill will literally break if a woman touches it

    • Should be renamed to Pepper Mannon

If you followed the Kickstarter/product, you'd know this product doesn't really go on sale. They do a 20% off sale for 1 day a year on their self proclaimed "MKDAY". Ok deal, but really only an extra 10% off considering they do a 10% off discount for new customers first order. Shame we're getting screwed with the US > AUD exchange rate.

Ultra high end product for professional chefs, enthusiastic cooks or people with lots of spare cash. Guess you could consider it a buy if for life product.

    • The 10% off is only if you buy direct, unlike this which is also offered by Amazon, so shipping is free and taxes are covered if you have Prime.

So with this deal you’re paying $279.20 instead of $353.7 if you buy direct and get 10% off. It’s a good deal.

My Pepper Cannon is worth every cent.

  • At a certain point, wouldn't getting a nice coffee handgrinder like a 1zpresso be a cheaper alternative? Just curious I guess!

    • I have considered the same question many times. In the end I got a Dreamfarm Ortwo but always wanted the cannon.

    • Quality aside, would a coffee grinder support as coarse a grind as you sometimes need for pepper?

      • Definitely will - most pourover coffee will be coarser than I want my coffee to be :)

        • For something like cacio e pepe you want pepper much coarser than pour over coffee grinds though

    • I was about to purchase the hand cannon when I saw your comment. I've got a 1zpresso which I bought to try and see if I liked coffee, but I didn't and it's been sitting unused (used once) for months. Thanks for this great suggestion!

    • I hadn't thought about that but you're definitely right. Wanna buy one and post a review? :)

That's awesome! Though I thought glory holes were more rampant in the 20th century.

          • @seamonkey: It's really picked up since the 19th century shows.

  • This is clearly not a cannon, a cannon suggests a projectile.

    • It is if you so choose.

      • Only if you throw it

  • +5

If you're cranking 70 times with any grinder over your steak… you're having pepper with steak, instead of steak with pepper.

    • If youve cranked 70 times without checking and refilling your grinder, youre probably not equipped to operate this device

  • +1

At this price, you'd expect it to be electronic at least. Baffles me why people pay exorbitant amounts of money for manual grinders lol

    • Look man it’s just personal preference. My chosen manual grinder is the NobEssence Seduction 2.0 and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

      • +2

Why did I google this at work 😶

        • Should’ve just gone into your cache

    • It's not exorbitant when you consider how long it will last.

Electronics just introduce something extra that can fail, and are completely unnecessary for this grinder since it's so efficient.

      • -1

A $5 pepper grinder will likely last as long, so what's the benefit of this one. You save a fractional amount of effort. Why not just blender your steak and drink it? Save yourself the chewing…

        • Lol, yeah right 😂

        • +1

Having considered this item, I looked at some reviews and what you're paying for is the build quality (solid chunk of aluminium) and the ability to grind pepper very coarsely or very finely - it has more steps of adjustment then your average grinder, 75 to be exact.

Of course, whether those qualities command the price tag is in the eye of the beholder and to some, is considered overkill. That said, it is a highly rated product albeit not for everyone.

The Unicorn Magnum would be a much better deal. Picked up their Magnum Plus for USD $59 + $25 shipping last year.

    • Pepper Cannon owner here. That Magnum Plus deal is good.

    • How did you manage to get one?

I have never seen them in stock.

      • +1

I emailed them directly, they don't seem to keep the Amazon AU page updated.

They were very responsive and quick.

I remember paying 16$ for a battery operated ones at coles 3 years back. Still works just fine(needs 6 eneloops tho). Pretty sure it would be faster than this overpriced grinder.

    • Pretty sure it wouldn't be faster

      • -1

I can say almost the same speed at the finest settings - https://youtu.be/nKBs40xvuoQ?si=jfpLYLMIfeNz2nHD&t=162

        • Almost the same speed is not the same as faster

          • @prhino: Speed apart, you are paying more price and have to manually churn it. Unless you are running a restaurant, i dont see the point in spending so much even if this thing was faster.

            • @[Deactivated]: For me it was as much about the quality. Yeah, I've paid three or four times the amount as I would for another grinder, but this one will last 10-20 years at absolute minimum. It's built like a tank. A lot of grinders start to fail after 2 or 3 years. Plus I love pepper.

I do get what you're saying though. I feel the same way about people spending $1200 - $2800 on a mobile phone.

              • @prhino: Not saying you are wrong, I have couple of manual ones too, but the battery operated ones always wins because of single handed operation. Especially if you are eating something with your hands, then there is no need to wash hands to use the battery operated ones. Convinience and speed. I eat more pepper because of this which is good.

  • Having seen this in action … the Pepper Cannon is seriously good.

  • I got the Peugeot Electric u'Select Pepper Mill many, many years ago on super special and still going strong.

  • But you also need the salt one too. Can't have one without the other.

    • Does salt taste different when freshly ground tho?

      • Doubt it.

        • Then always good to have a salt shaker instead of a grinder. I agree with the matching looks tho.

          • @[Deactivated]: I just buy some kosher salt in a shaker :) or sometimes some sea salt, depends what's on special. But always have kosher for bbq.

            • @tman2020: Kosher salt is just the the same as cooking salt.

              • @prhino: By cooking salt do you mean table salt. If so, there is a diffrence. Kosher salt is not iodized like table salt. I find table salt to have a bitter after taste and is more saltier compared to kosher. Not an issue for cooking or salads but on meat like smoked brisket, pulled pork or ribs and even steaks where coarse salt is called for it makes a diffrence. In my opinion, others may have other views.

                • +1

@tman2020: No, I mean cooking salt.

Table salt is completely different. Much finer than cooking or kosher salt.

  • I always wanted this thing and would have totally jumped on it at this price. Instead though i bought myself a kingrinder k1 coffee grinder to try out as a pepper grinder instead for about $50 and have been extremely happy with it. Great alternative for those who want to be able to grind a serious amount of pepper at a fraction of the cost.

    • Why do you want to grind so much pepper tho? Just curious.

      • +2

Have you seen how much pepper goes on a whole Brisket? I have done 3 at once, spent 10 minutes just grinding pepper and salt and that was with the Dreamfarm double action handle thing.

      • +1

What Greennick said. It's mainly for large pieces of meat as a rub, or if i am cooking a lot of steak. Also i do use a lot more pepper on my food than most people would, i think. The k1 means i can find enough pepper for a dinner with one or two turns of the handle.
I imagine the Pepper Cannon would be the same in a far more convenient and better looking form.

        • Ah got it, for meat. Sorry, i am veggie guy, didnt think of it.

          • @[Deactivated]: I smother my veges in pepper too :D

            • +1

@DanielP2: I dont eat a lot of raw veggies, mostly cooked ones. I use plenty on eggs tho. Makes them tasty!

  • +1

Ahh yes the bargain $280 manual pepper mill….

  • +1

Wow how fast do you need pepper on your plate lol

    • I grind pepper/sea salt for rubs etc, when you need a couple of tablespoons of ground pepper using a manual grinder is pretty slow and kills your wrists.
Currently using an electric grinder but the capacity is very limited compared to regular grinders.

These would be tempting but $560 for set is still a bit much!

  • +1

Another ozbargain post that reminds you theres 1%'ers still out there

  • It's still showing as $349 for me, as does camelx3. Anyone else?

You gotta be kidding! SERIOUSLY!? $300 for a grinder that does the same thing as a grinder at a fraction of the cost. All to save a couple of seconds of grinding. If you have to use so much pepper, use a pestle & mortar. Nearly half a week wage for a pepper grinder…….

    • +1

Half a day for these buyers

      • Lol yeah i don't live in or near a city. Government says the average wage is $1800pw… Missus and i don't make that combined lol. Spose the people who make up for that average total are the people buying this grinder, you're right! Lmao
I'll stick to my twist and pour/sprinkle pepper bottle lol

    • You gotta be kidding! SERIOUSLY!? $300 for a grinder that does the same thing as a grinder at a fraction of the cost.

This pepper grinder doesn't make sense to you the same way this $2,799 bendable gaming monitor doesn't make sense to many people. :)

      • How much pepper do you eat/use to warrant buying this? A computer monitor is something you use for hours on end, for multiple purposes, such as work, gaming, production and many other things.
This is a pepper grinder… Use for a few seconds and put it back in the cupboard/pantry until the next time you use it for another few seconds

        • A computer monitor is something you use for hours on end, for multiple purposes, such as work, gaming, production and many other things.

A $600 monitor can do all that, you don't need a $2,799 monitor. But a $2,799 bendable monitor would be nice to have wouldn't it.

Likewise a $30 grinder can do most of what this $279 grinder can do. But a $279 well-built, high-output grinder would be nice to have wouldn't it. Well maybe not to you, but that's no different to people thinking a $2,799 bendable monitor is silly.

          • @eug: You make a good point. BUT, this is an item used for only a few seconds at a time. For something like a monitor you're gonna be using for hours and hours at a time, the bells and whistles are justified.
I don't have a $2800 monitor but being a gamer for decades, i can see why people use them.

  • I am just not seeing the value here. It just makes absolutely no sense. You can get 15-20 cheap electric shakers for that price. There are electric salt and pepper grinders for under $10 on Temu.

For example, I got the Aldi electric salt and pepper shaker for around $15. They have both been doing just fine for a few years now. I dont care if they break. If I get 4-5 years of usable life out of them, that is far more than I expected. I will just go out and buy another $15 set. Rinse and repeat. At this rate, I will probably go 50 years before I have spent the same amount as a single one of these 'pepper cannons'.

At this price, there is no value for money, no matter how well it is built. Do yourself a favour, buy a $15 set and spend the rest on something far more important.

    • At this price, there is no value for money, no matter how well it is built. Do yourself a favour, buy a $15 set and spend the rest on something far more important.

I could also say $2,553 for a 65" TV is not value for money. I could just buy a $600 TV from ALDI.

For the huge percentage of TV users who just want to watch some netflix or have the something going in the background in a brightly-lit room, an OLED TV would be completely pointless, just like this pepper grinder.

But I also realise everybody is different - some people will happily pay triple the price for an OLED screen because they value nice colours and dark blacks, and that's fine.

Likewise some people will happily pay $279 for a very well-made grinder that feels solid and speeds up their brisket prep, and that's fine too.

Different people assign value to things differently because … we're not all the same.

I don't have this grinder because I can't get myself to spend that much on a grinder. But I do see why it's attractive to some people.

      • That's true, people have varied value propositions on different items.

Ultimately, no one says that this is inherently a bad item, I am sure it is a great grinder, it is just simply has very poor value for money. Same can be said for Bentleys, I am sure they are great cars, but no one has used Bentley and value for money in the same sentence.

        • I am sure it is a great grinder, it is just simply has very poor value for money.

That's the thing - "value for money" is subjective as people don't just calculate value based one one single metric. It is very poor value to you because you don't value the benefits it provides, and that's fine.

But someone who isn't into food would think even a $15 pepper grinder is poor value for money because pre-ground pepper costs $2 and comes in a convenient shaker because they don't value the benefits freshly-ground pepper provides - and that's fine too.

Purchasing power affects the perception of value as well. $279 is worth a lot more to someone earning $40k than to someone earning $400k. If the latter sees a product that's built well, looks good, works better, saves them a minute each time they do up a 5kg brisket and can be purchased with the spare change from last weekend's dinner, it'd be an easy purchase.

Some people also simply appreciate the look and feel of a product rather than simply looking at pure functionality and are willing to pay a premium for something that feels good to use and looks nice on the table. They factor in look and feel into their perception of value.

Everyone does it to some extent - otherwise we would all be wearing the same clothes and shoes from Target or Kmart. Instead, many people happily pay a premium for a nicer design or materials even though they do the same thing as a $15 shirt from Kmart.
