[Pre Order] Ubiquiti Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra Router $234 Delivered @ Australian Warehouses

561

I have been keeping an eye out for this to be available in Australia at a reasonable price and have come across it at Australian Warehouses (I hadn’t heard of them before but they have posted a few deals on OzBargain before without any issues by the looks of it)

I have been advised the router has an ETA of 6 to 8 weeks for delivery.

US RRP $129 which by the time you take into account conversion rates and GST and the included shipping it’s a great price!

Note:
This is a router and does not include a Wi-Fi access point like the Newly released UniFi Express from thisdeal

Device Specs:

  • Runs UniFi Network for full-stack network management
  • Manages 30+ UniFi Network devices and 300+ clients
  • 1 Gbps routing with IDS/IPS
  • Multi-WAN load balancing

Looks like a reasonable upgrade to my trusty USG

    • Is that the purpose of this, an updated USG?

    • +2

Agreed! I accidentally bought the Unifi Express by rushing my research and thinking I was getting the UXG-Lite. The express has been sitting in a corned rejected and unusable (for my purposes). This UCG-Ultra kinda looks like the perfect USG-3 replacement…

    • +1

Keep in mind that LAN routing is still 1Gbit (only WAN is 2.5Gbit) so it's not much of an upgrade unless you really need/want to use IPS/IDS.

I'll probably wait until something with full 2.5Gbe shows up at a good price.

      • +4

        Updating firmware at 2.5Gbit woohoo!

        • +5

In Australia that would probably be around year 2030 lol

      • it won’t happen for 2.5G as marketshare is too small? I can’t even find a decent setup to upgrade all my network to 2.5G from 1G (switches / poe nodes etc)

    • Is it much of an upgrade? Looks basically the same as the old USG except with the Unifi controller built in?

  • +3

Nice that they are basically going down the route of removing cloudkeys. Felt silly having to spend the $200 on a separate box just to get the functionality from the USG etc.

    • How many cameras can you control with this, 4? The new gateway with wifi does larger number of cameras iirc?

      • Not sure which gateway you are referring to, but neither this Cloud Gateway Ultra or any other recent products run Protect (the camera software). The most recent device to do so is the Dream Wall afaik.

  • -5

For an extra $30, may as get the UniFi Express with WiFi which CentreCom has for $265 inc shipping

I've got a UniFi Express sitting in a box awaiting config for a customer.

    • +6

The Unifi Express can't manage very many devices so this is NOT a good choice if you have multiple Unifi APs and/or switches already. Further, I found it was not possible to move an existing controller config into the Express, requiring you to set everything up from scratch. The Express is NOT a USG replacement and is more of a competitor to regular wifi router gateways you'd see from Netgear and the likes.

    • +5

Looks like this supports 30 Unifi devices rather than the 4 that the Express does. That's quite a big difference (but won't be needed for most home users).

    • -6

dude you do know what a managed router is right? and the difference between that and a unmanaged router…

      • +3

        Yes I do thanks.

        • -1

          good just making sure.

    • That's not even a good deal, it's $239 at PLE.

      • PLE I think often charges a bit for shipping, so might vary depending on your location.

    • The Unifi Express doesn't have full IPS/IDS at 1gbit like this does. Quite a different device. I have a Unifi Express and I'm upgrading to one of these, using it as an AP. Good comment about it here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15089337/redir

  • +2

Is dropping the wifi the only difference between this and UniFi Express? For the little bit extra wouldn’t it be better to have wifi?

    • +8

https://evanmccann.net/blog/ubiquiti/unifi-comparison-charts is a great resource for this.

No they are not the same.

Ultra has 2.5Gbps WAN, close to 1Gbps with packet inspection (Express does not support IPS/IDS), VPN speeds are much higher, it has failover WAN, and twice as many CPU cores, 3 times as much RAM, and is slightly bigger.

It can do much more than the Express except for also providing a built-in AP. If you already have UniFi APs, the Express is not the better choice here. If you want a single device only, the Express might suit you fine.

      • Can Express or Ultra do policy based routing? e.g connect a device in your home network to NordVPN or PIA?

        • +1

In short: I don't know as I am not a networking professional.

However, I have done this with my USG-3 with some custom gateway.config.jsoning and VLANs. Basically, I used to have a specific a different vlan which egresses over a VPN link.

        • If it shares the same OS a d functionality as UDM "Network" application. Then Yes. You simply add the VPN via Wireguard or OpenVPN to "VPN Client" and then Traffic direct the VLAN to that WAN Network (VPN Client name)

Individual IP based routing. I have not tried yet.

      • awesome thanks

    • Also need to take into account, number of ports and number of UniFi devices managed.

    • Is this legit seller?
Someone got any experience with them?

      • just use it to get a price match?

        • +2

          "Australian Warehouses
          Hello There,
Sorry we can't price match except official partners"

      • Yes, I've used them before but in their previous guise as Ubiquiti Store

    • -1

      This product has NO ETA

      • -1

        it does now

  • +2

Anyone want a 2 month old UXG-Lite FFS.

    • I just bought one a few weeks ago too

    • Or perhaps my similarly aged Unifi Express??

    • Yeh - not too happy …. BUT - UXG-Lite does what I need (USG replacement) so I guess I will just bite my tongue (now) and move on

    • Assuming you are already running your Unifi Network Controller on a machine on your network, why would you want to switch from the UXG-Lite to this ? I can't see any reason 🤔

  • +3

I can never figure out their various product names and features. How does this compare to UDM?

    • +5

Yeah, calling device "Dream Machine" and trying to market it as an enterprise device…
I have no idea what they are smoking. :)

    • it is not as big

    • Not rack mountable, less ports on the switch and looks like it can’t run protect, which needs a hard drive for video storage. Those are the main differences to me.

Compared to the SE, the ports don’t have PoE.

  • +1

Just pre-ordered at buzy (terrible name btw). No cost or deposit required. Cancel at any time.

Will be handy to have as a backup if my UDM SE goes down.

    • Yeah same. might as well. i presume all retailers have the same 6-8 week ETA.

    • Any shipping estimate included with the pre-order?

      • +1

$15 for most metro, $20 for regional.

      • As in a date? No.

  • Thanks OP!

  • +4

Thank you for sharing this deal.

The current delivery estimate from Ubiquiti is about 8 weeks.
We do offer free cancelation anytime before shipment if you pay via card or via bank transfer ( PayPal attract non refundable fees held by PayPal not by us )

  • Would this also be a decent upgrade for a USG-PRO-4?

I already have extra POE switches and AP's around my house, so just need it for routing.

    • +1

On the surface, this looks like the replacement I've been waiting for for that exact device.

    • Gateway Pro UXG-Pro and it fits in the same rack space.

      • Mine isn't rack mounted, and I only got the USG-PRO to handle 1Gb FTTP (well HFC now) over the USG3 struggling.

Not to mention $250 is way more palatable than almost $1k!

        • +1

In that case this UCG-ULTRA is perfect.

  • +2

what doe these do? We have them at work. Is this a device for businesses or are individuals on OzB buying them?

    • -4

      Maybe asked ChatGPT.

      • -2

Clearly no one got my Joke. ChatCPT asking…… maybe they should use ChatGPT.

    • +1

At home you have a wireless router combo. This is just the router part. So it gives ip addresses to all your devices, divided and filters traffic

I used to go through heaps of wireless routers, maybe a year or two, something died. Then I bought what they had at work, and it's rock solid. Same thing with the family home (5 years zero downtime?)

The fact you had to ask what this does, probably tells me you don't need it. However if you ever get frustrated with networking, seperate all the items.. (router, wireless access point, switch) and buy this.

Full disclosure in a recent power issue (cycling 0-180v AC input every second) my U router PSU did die. But I don't blame the company for that. I swapped out the supply with my own and it's been working well since

      • +1

thanks for replying! agree definitely dont need it but I like to be aware of whats out there and most of the time I get the best responses from other ozbargainers
I just got a mesh wifi and I cant believe it took me so long to get onto this! my wifi range and speeds are incredible

  • +1

I had a Unifi Dream Router which was RMA'd due to drop outs. No replacement stock in country so I was refunded and picked up a Unifi Express unit as a stop gap (I can turn this into an dedicated AP later). I have 3 other Unifi AP's around the house.

I am think this (Ubiquiti Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra Router) and a basic ASUS router (rather than another Dream Router). The ASUS routers seem to be more stable when it comes to the internet connection. Thoughts?

    • +1

My dream machine SE hasn't skipped a beat in the past 18 months. Only had a handful of (<2 min) drop outs - which is when the entire community page is also up in arms.
      Flawless.

  • My house network (switches & APs - more then 5 devices) has been fully Ubiquiti with the exception of the router (right now running a Mikrotik Hap AC2 with firewall rules/openvpn/etc).
Have been holding off getting a Ubiquiti router as the dream machine etc haven’t appealed to me.
This UCG-Ultra looks like it might be a good replacement for the Mikrotik and being able to have a single view management.

  • Do i need this as an upgrade over an UDM? Household environment, only 2 APs currently, 1 managed switch, several LAN devices, and 30+ wireless devices.

I'm really curious why 2.5gbps LAN isnt more common/more affordable.

    • I had a UDM and move over to one of these.

I don't use protect / access etc, and I had the radio turned off on the UDM anyway (it is WiFi 5, and I have Wifi 6 APs). So the UCG-Ultra is exactly what I needed.

    • The only real advantage I have seen is the reduced power/heat. Having said that, I'm probably going to swap out my UDM for one when they actually arrive, but I already don't use the AP built into the UDM, and I have had the UDM for 5 years so it's due for retirement.

    • Because your router likely doesn't need 2.5gb. Do you have greater than 1gbps WAN? You can run a 10Gbps lan behind this using switches no problem.

      • Do clarify - how do I run LAN networks faster than 1 Gbps when none of the LAN ports are > 1Gbps on my UDM (currently) or this which has

        4x 1 Gbps Lan Ports

        • This is a router not a switch. This routes traffic from your LAN to the internet and vice-versa. Also from VLAN to VLAN within your LAN if you have VLAN's set up. To run a faster than 1Gbps LAN, you would use a 2.5/10Gbps capable switch to connect your devices. Inter-device traffic on your LAN will not pass through the router.

          • +1

@jmadden91: Oooooooo. so all I need to do is get a faster capable switch, and have both devices on this switch alone. I
Assuming both client device has lan adapters > 1gbps. I didn't know this..thanks for this!

            • @lawyerz: No worries. Your UDM is basically a router with a built in 1Gbps switch. The unifi product in this deal is just the router part. You would use something like this switch below to connect your PC to your Network Storage (NAS) to get faster transfer speeds between them. The router connects to the switch to provide all devices internet access. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/829563

              • @jmadden91: Ughhhh. Turns out the main two client devices I wanted to connect only support gigabit, my cables in the walls are (probably) just 5e so gigabit. It'll be an expensive affair swapping them over to get the switch, client adaptors, and cables in the walls replaced.

  • I'm gonna pass, my trusty USG-3P is still kicking (after PSU replacement) and also provides full 1Gbit routing (although with IPS/IDS disabled)

Out or curiosity though, are the 4x LAN ports on this one switched? I.e. do they each have to belong to their own separate network/subnet like on USG-3P, or can they be part of the same network?

    • +2

I have one of these running for the last couple of days.

Ports 1 to 4 are normal LAN ports, can assign VLANs etc, but doesn't support aggregation.
Port 4 can be made a WAN port if required (for failover)
      Port 5 is WAN

      Edit: about 10W less power.

      • Where did you manage to find one already? Leader as a distributor still don't even have a date.

        • Tech geeks. Paid a bit of a premium, but I have it already.

          • @srsparky: Ah cheers.. that makes sense then, imported direct from Ubiquiti.

I'll wait this time, was good to get my UDM Early Access back in 2019 but it's always slightly annoyed me that I had to keep my Country/Region set to US on it.

            • @Arsenal:

annoyed me that I had to keep my Country/Region set to US on it.

Does the gear still refuse to work if set to AU?

I tried importing a US Unifi AP ages back and it refused to work once it figured it was overseas.

(TBF this isn't limited to Ubiquiti gear.)

              • +1

@rumblytangara: Yeah, it works fine as long as the region setting is set to US, so no real harm.. identical functionality to the multiple subsequent UDMs I have setup for people. It's just always in the back of my mind that it's misconfigured.

              • +1

@rumblytangara: I have 2 U6 Pro's, a UP Sense and a G5 Dome EA all from the US Ubiquiti store working with my locally bought UDM Pro. No issues with region setting to AU.

                • @shahfar: Yeah, it's the controller device that cares about the region matching, so with your locally bought UDM Pro it's not an issue.

                  • @Arsenal: I use an imported UXG-Lite and it's quite happy running in AU region - your UDM region experience doesn't seem like the norm.

                    • @Nom: As i said it's the controller device that cares.. and last i checked the UXG-Lite doesn't run the Network controller?

    • Wondering if holding out on a similar trusty USG, (and also a PSU swap over), and see if there is a 2.5gbit version on the horizon. Feels as though unifi has fallen behind in this area a bit.

Still good to know there is a pathway for the time being, and much improved over the express.

  • +1

Ubiquiti are the apple of routers, super slick gui prioritised over actual features. If you want features go with Mikrotik.

    • +2

I never thought I'd be justifying apple… They just work, and have all the features a general user would need, and they are available pretty much everywhere. I do have an android phone, but I understand why companies force apple. Same goes for ubiquiti

All the companies I've worked for/seen run ubiquiti or cisco.

  • +2

Looking to get into the unifi ecosystem mainly to increase the security of my home network.
For a 2 bedroom apartment, would it be better to go with this UCG ultra + AP or is it better to get a Ubiquiti Dream Router?

    • Do you anticipate using Gbit internet to it's full potential during the lifecycle of this router? If so, go with the Ultra combo. Could you use a security camera? If so go with the UDR.

    • I'd say UDR. I've got one servicing a full 4 bedroom house just fine. I'd say a UCG Ultra + AP would provide more upgrade options in the future though as you'd only have to upgrade one part if needed. However you could always just use the UDR as a router/gateway and buy a future AP.

  • wonder if i should finally replace my EdgeRouter 6P - Anyone want one?

  • What's this like with bufferbloat compared to using cake or something similar?

    • +2

Last time I did a bunch of casual home testing, I found that bufferbloat isn't a big enough problem to bother countering on an nbn connection. We tested around 5 home connections.

We'd see jumps in latency to 100-200ms but no lost pings. So just not worth the config effort and slight bandwidth sacrifice.

Very different from telco setups in other countries where maxing a line would result in sustained packet loss.

Are you getting actual packet loss if you max your internet bandwidth?

  • I already got Dream Machine SE, so safe to pass this deal right?

  • +9

$234 delivered seems a bit pricey? Pretty sure RRP is around $205. wireless1

    • +1

This is a valid neg. No one knows what the price will be but if wireless1 have it listed for $205 that is probably closer to what we might pay.

  • In terms of the ability to manage extensive UniFi networks (over 30 devices and 300+ clients), does that mean it also works as a Access Controller to seamless roam across multiple APs in my place?

    • +1

Yep, this has the network controller built-in.
