Thanks needed another drive, used to think my 1tb will never get filled but media centre sure showed me

  • officeworks also this price for this model. Just wondering though, the case look very tightly fitted to the HDD, almost no vents for any circulation. Just wondering if this would be an issue with overheating?

It gets pretty warm when you use it. You can feel the heat when touching the top but it is not an unconfotable feeling when touching, the internal hear is about 52 when doing some intensive data transfer. The noise is noticeable since it is 7200rpm but you get speed to compensate for.

      • "unconfotable"

        You win today's spelling bee.

        • oops, damn the auto correct, should have double checked

Its more like an "auto wrong" thing.

Beware that if you are planning to plug this one into a media player with network access like WDTV Live, it never turns off even when you are not using it.

The media player tends to keep the HDD on for network access, and will therefore, never power it off. Therefore, it solely depends on the drive's own power management to switch it off. However, the power management default setting is without standby so it will keep spinning. You can change it by downloading a software on seagate website.

I don't know whether it is just me or everyone but when I change it to standby after 5mins of inactivity, the drive goes off initially but after a while, turns itself back on and stays on forever.

    • I am interseted in connecting this to a Mac Mini HTPC. Do you know if it turns it self off whilst the Mini is in standby mode?

  • In terms of portable solutions, they've also got the Seagate GoFlex 1.5TB for $134: http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/computers-laptops/computer-ac…

Anyone had much experience with it?

    • Yes, I have the 2.5" GoFlex 1.5TB. Bought it before the flood, so it was a bit cheaper then (probably $129, can't remember exactly).

I've been using it to transport files between home and work, medium to light use. On average probably once or twice a week. It's been running fine, no problems with it. The cable/socket feels quite secure when connected and won't easily fall out, unlike some other external enclosures I have.

The only downside (compared to other drives currently available) is that the connection is only USB 2.0. There are optional connector/cables with USB 3.0, however, none of my computers have USB 3.0 yet.

  • I'd be interested in knowing what the data transfer speed is for the drive. Did a search, but can't seem to find any figures.

    • 80MB/s on average, peak at 135 but does not last long. This is tested under copying 1.5TB data, about 12500 files; it takes me about 6 hours

  • Wonder if 3TBs will get to around $130 in pre-xmas specials?

  • the spec sheet says APAC 3 years warrenty, does it include australia?
or we are just having 1 yr warrenty?

  • is this offer available in store for pickup??

    • Yes, you can order it online and pick it up at your nearest store or better still you can just walk in and grab one at your nearest store. The offer is in latest catalogue as well. Have a good evening

  • Is there that much difference in the latest model? I just have to check bunch of numbers above to check that its the right one right? Any esier ways to tell on the shelf?

    • Its only physical appearance really, they all use a very similar HDD. It has USB3 support though which can make transfers a bit faster then 2.0 if that's what you're already using

  • Hmmm, can you remove this and use it in desktop PC or is it soldered?

  • Argh! Got a 1.5TB one recently for $99, 3TB would definitely help me avoid keeping my other externals (one 750GB & one 320GB)
