            @TEER3X:

I think you're overblowing the traffic impact, it's not like AFL is on 24/7.

Obvioulsy, you've never been through Hobart during peak hour traffic. It's really not nice. And, Clear has a point about the Midland Highway - I moved to Tassie in 2020 and I have never known it to have no construction in progress. Dual lanes? Fagedaboutit! It's one of the most-travelled roads in the entire state so it really needs to be better than it is.

There is also a good point that $1Bn can be better spent on something like health care. If you've ever had to sit in Launceston General ED at any time (let alone 1am on a weekend!) then you'll know how important that is. Specialist services are even worse - there's a good reason many Tasmanians go the mainland for treatment, because it's simply not available here!

            • -1

@Chazzozz: Does that $1b spent on the stadium necessarily mean it's being taken away (in effect) from healthcare?

I find it similar to the argument of why are we sending/going into space when that money could be spent to solve problem x.

Or is it a case of every city needs a monorail?

Does that really need to be answered? Governments have budgets and when a significant amount is allocated to one project it means money that would have been available elsewhere is no longer available.

              @Chazzozz:

If you've ever had to sit in Launceston General ED at any time (let alone 1am on a weekend!) then you'll know how important that is.

They currently have about 38 beds in ED with one bed dedicated to resus and every night all 37 beds are occupied since the wards are full. Of the 3 major hospitals in that city they're the only one with an emergency department.

The next closest being Mersey which is 90km away. God forbid you end up in the Mersey and need a scan as there's no radiologists onsite and you'll have to travel a further 60km to the next hospital. Hoping that it's not in the middle of the night, as radiology is not 24/7 in Burnie. Let alone Launceston (which btw is about to be closed unless they find staff/funding). You need to travel to Hobart for 24/7 radiology and if you're in Burnie that's 305km away.

That's the problem with everyone else not understanding why nearly all Tasmanians aren't pro stadium. It's so easy to die in hospital here because all the basic services you'd expect simply aren't there due to a lack of funding.

But hey a $1 billion stadium in a minimum of 4 years will do the state good and generate money. It would suck if any of the AFL players were injured - they'd be waiting outside the hospital on the ramp. Assuming there's an ambulance available.

              • +1

@Clear: Oh and I double checked the figures. The whole stadium development is infact $2.3 billion.

        • -4

          greenie.

        • -1

How many car parks are there at the MCG?
How many days funding does the $375m (the state gov has committed to, with the rest to be from private investment). Approx 54 days.
The money injected by the federal Gov will not be redirected to health and housingif this doesn't get built.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Tasmania to have an AFL side, and they will also have a billion dollar asset, to be used for AFL, soccer, rugby, concerts etc, as well as re-vitalising the Hobart CBD, and making use of a waste gound at the edge of the city centre.

Screw the state Labor party and the Greens for making this a political shi+ storm.

          • @IAmMiguel78:

How many car parks are there at the MCG?

That whole argument falls apart because of public transport. There's a reason US stadiums have carparks as far as the eye can see, while cities like Melbourne and Sydney do not. Sufficient train, tram and bus transport and infrastructure. Something we lack.

The money injected by the federal Gov will not be redirected to health and housingif this doesn't get built.

Who thinks that would ever be the case? The money funded by the state government would be allocated elsewhere.

What does the Founding Membership include?

As a Founding Member, you will receive a special digital Founding Membership card. You will also receive a sensational Founding Member sticker – there are three to choose from. Additionally, you will receive member exclusive communication and access to member exclusive merchandise. Most importantly, as a Founding Member your name will be represented in our training and administration home forever! We are not exactly sure how we will do it yet, but we can guarantee you your name will always be there.

How long does my Founding Membership last for?

Once you are a Founding Member, you will have that staus for life. However, you only have until 31 October to get on board as a Founding Member.

    • +11

An exclusive status held by 100,000+ people with presumably zero ongoing benefits.

      • +6

This is not about what the Tasmania Devils can do for you, this is what you can do for the Tasmania Devils.

  • +8

Sounds like a donation… is this tax deductible?

    • +8

Effectively a tax donation to a team that is controlled by the AFL, an organisation that is already flush with cash. Sure seems like a donation to me.

      • +4

Taxpayers are funding the stadium that was a condition of having a team down there.

    • You need to get one of the fancy pants memberships and go via the Australian Sports Foundation

    • +3

Probably not tax deductible as you get something in return.

  • +8

I'm all for supporting the club to give them a boost while they prepare to enter the competition, but I don't think $10 for a sticker and a name on a wall is a deal. This seems to be better suited to the forums.

    • Club memberships aren't normally cheap, even when you don't get anything, I've always wanted to be a Saints member, but never invested enough for regular fees.

$10 membership isn't a bad deal in itself.

      • +4

I understand being able to say that you're a member of the club, and there may be some future perks down the track that founding members may be able to take advantage of (exclusive emails and merch being 2 of them), but based on a sticker and a name on a wall alone I feel is not worth $10.

Just like I don't think it's worth paying my club Collingwood $75 for a membership card, member cap, lanyard, bumper sticker, years of service patch and 10% off merch.

    • +1

$10 for your name to be on a wall… that is easy $10 worth.

    • …No name on wall…don't know why everyone thinks there is a wall… "your name will be represented in our training and administration home".

      • I think everyone assumes it's a name on a wall because that's the easiest way to immortalise someone. But now that they have 100k+ signups, they may have a tough time deciding how to go about it!

        • +1

Well..you know what they say about those who assume..

  • +18

nah all you guys are bandwagoners, I've been barracking for the devils since check notes February

  • +1

This is amazing, finally a team worth supporting!! Signed up, thanks OP!

  • GWS was also $10 at the start before they started playing… it wasn’t $50

    • what benefits did they get back then for $10? any free tickets?

      • Not much at all from memory. They certain give out free tickets today

  • Love it.. bit of fun.

One hour in, and they already have more members that the Suns and Giants combined…

    • +1

You might have to change teams

    • +1

The trick will be, if and when they release actual memberships, how many people will put down a pineapple or 2 (or 3) of their hard earned…

    • +2

For 10 bucks, trick is converting them to actual memberships when it costs 300+

    • +1

Yup OZB becomes founding members for up and coming, non-existant Tassie Club… ?

  • +4

    That jersey design is horrendous.
    "We are the team"

I guess they needed to keep it real simple for their local demographic…

    • That jingle jangled off the back of a timber jinker. Only marginally better than Essendon's "Whatever it takes" during the supplements scandal. Seems like they were in such a rush to get something out before the election that they all dropped the ball.

  • Are there any ongoing fees?

  • +3

I don't get what the deal is here that makes it OzBargain worthy?

    • +7

Its a devil of a deal

      • lol

      • +2

Or a deal with the Devil?

      • +2

The devil is in the detail…

    • before it got amended, the post said “ All foundation memberships allow access to all games involving Tasmania, home and away, along with live streaming of all previous games.” which to some might be worth $10

    • -1

      $10 for a sticker.

  • If only it came with Kayo subscription!

  • Hope you all thought about the entrance fee you'll have to pay to see your name on this database.

  • +9

I wonder if anyone has signed up under the name "Collingwood Forever" - it would be interesting to see that name on the walls of their training facility.

  • +2

If they went with the Tassie Turbo Chooks, foundation numbers would have been double.

Ozb never fails to amaze me, $10 for a sticker is a deal, who cares about a name on a wall that you will never see.. Here if you want I'll put your name on my wall.

    • Where do I send my money to for your wall?

  • +1

    This is not a membership.

Will I get priority access to future membership options?

Founding Members will be at the top of the list for future communications on membership. We’re working on the final details here but stay tuned!

  • +2

so what's the way to write this onto my resume

  • +1

Can't believe am American company owns the copyright to the game if an Australian animal.

    • I can't believe how bad your grammar and spelling are. Did you even read your post before clicking Submit?

      • +2

no sorry, apologies for any headaches.

what i meant to say was - can't believe an American company (Warner brothers) owns the trademark to the name of an Australian animal (Tasmanian Devil). plus the current non-disclosure around the agreement.

edit - by agreement i meant the agreement for Warner Brothers to allow the Australian Football League to use the name.

        • +2

Ah, much better - thanks for the clarification.

According to Wikipedia, the trademark dispute has been settled (this month!). Although, I agree in principle that it's ludicrous to allow a media company to 'own' the trademark on the name of an animal endemic to a region. Maybe I should create a character named Wallaby, trademark the name, and charge the ARU for the privilege of fielding their team. That's a sure-fire way to riches!

          • +1

@Chazzozz: Wish them all the best and hope to see the territories eventually join in too.

  • How long is this good for?

  • -1

$20 special. 1 membership per head

  • +3

Team status is only being granted subject to an enormous stadium being built on the best waterfront real estate in Hobart. Basically the AFL has dictated the whole deal to the Tasmanian government. Possibly the AFL is offering these ‘memberships’ to make the numbers look good. Forget housing and health, let’s sink a billion dollars into an AFL moneymaker!

    • +1

It's an absolute joke. Really hoping the election gets rid of the Libs and has enough Greens/Independents to make sure Labor doesn't just bend over too.

  • +2

Do you want to be a founding member of my club?

I don't have a team or a ground yet either - but my membership is only $9.
    (Oz)Bargain!

  • +4

About time Tasmania joined the AFL. I hope they find success and enjoyment in the national competition. We now need a Darwin based team and the AFL can truly become the 'Australian' football league.

    • +2

Then NZ could join the party and share their sheep with the Tasmanians

  • +5

Unobtainable deal if they cancel the stadium?

  • +2

    Just hit 100k

  • +1

Should have been .com.au but that's taken tasmaniafc.com.au.

  • +3

So over 100k people have already paid $10 a piece to be founding members?

I'm starting my own club, you can be a founding member too, I'll even give ozbargainers a 5% discount!

    • +1

      Link?

  • +2

Is this a deal? What's the regular price?

  • +1

$10 to have my name permanent written at some stadium in Tasmania seems like the best part of this deal :)

  • +4

100,000 members already - by weekend we might have surpassed the Eras tour attendance

  • Got one! Ta

  • Would getting this membership be the cheapest way to get into the pool for grand final tickets?

    • +1

Yes, you and the 100,000+ other members who've already signed up lmao

  • +3

Too cheap to pass up, I have a mate in Tassie and I go see Crows games when they play down there, might score something extra

  • +10

I've never been to Tasmania and I don't really like football. I am now a proud founding member of The Tasmanian Devils AFL Club.

  • Are the stickers made in China?

  • +3

I got the $15 premium package. All 4 stickers!

  • What's the cheapest NBL or NBL1 membership? I need to get a NBL or NBL1 membership to qualify for a Mitsubishi Promotional offer

  • +5

They just a dropped a news.com.au article saying they're blown away by member numbers. No credit to Ozbargain anywhere…

    https://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/blow-your-mind-tasmania-de…

    • +2

      lol - well done OzB's!
…Just two days after the club’s official launch, AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon revealed on Wednesday there were already 121,000 founding members of the Tasmania Devils…

    • News limited would never give credit anywhere other than to the afl because they have the tv rights. They’re trying to make the game seem more popular than it already is to make their product seem more appealing.

  • +1

“Your name will be represented in our training and administration home” …Your name is going in a founding members book at the front reception desk and not on a wall.

    • You’re likely correct. It would be nice to have our names engraved on a wall or even a paver, but I’d settle with a members book at least it’s memorialised somewhere.
